Theresa May delays UK Brexit vote

10:32
Britain's big Brexit decision was delayed, as Prime Minister Theresa May pulled the plug on the December 11th parliamentary vote on her deal for the country to leave the European Union. May admitted the decision to delay the vote was made after it became clear she would lose it "by a significant margin" and she will now go back to EU leaders to seek further reassurances. The embattled leader told the UK House of Commons that she had listened "very carefully to what has been said in this chamber and out of it" -- a statement that was met by laughter and jeering by members of Parliament. May admitted that "there remains widespread and deep concern" over the Northern Ireland backstop. The backstop is an arrangement designed to ensure there is no return to a "hard border" between Ireland, which will remain part of the European Union after Brexit, and Northern Ireland when the UK leaves the bloc next March. The prime minister said she had hoped changes secured to the backstop, to avoid being trapped in it indefinitely, would be enough for MPs. The Brexit deadline is on the 29th of March, and today’s vote will determine the logistics of how the UK will proceed with Brexit and parliament’s role in the process. May responds after Brexit vote defeat - BBC News

03:37
Theresa May says it is clear MPs do not support the deal. However, she says that "tonight's vote tells us nothing about what it does support, nothing about how or even if it intends to honour the decision that people took in a referendum". "EU citizens here and UK citizens in the EU deserve clarity as soon as possible," she says, as do businesses and ordinary people. The focus now is confirming whether the government still has Parliament's confidence, she says, and the government will make time tomorrow to debate a no confidence motion if one is tabled by the Labour party. What is a 'no deal' Brexit? And what does it mean for the UK and Europe?

03:30
Tuesday, January 15 - essentially spells D-day for British Prime Minister Theresa May as MPs take their seats in the House of Commons to deliver their verdict on her government's Brexit deal. After days of debate, they will vote on both the withdrawal agreement, a legally-binding, nearly 600 page document that sets out how the UK leaves the European Union, and the future political framework — a set of ambitions for a European Union (EU)-UK trade deal. Adding pressure to the mix, it follows a week of Brexit defeats for May after MPs voted last Wednesday in favour of a limited period to present next steps on Brexit if the current deal is rebuffed. Had the vote on May's deal taken place when it was originally planned back in December, the government would have 21 days to return to the Commons to set out what it plans to do next, in the event of a deal rejection. But now, May would be given just three days to present a Brexit plan B. What are the possible outcomes of the vote? Find out here: bit.ly/2VTseP7 What are the top stories today? But that’s what people living in Europe have had to deal with: their own nation’s bloated government and the super-national government of Europe, now known as the European Union. Bureaucracy times two! How’s that for a horror show? Well, actually, you’ve no idea. It’s worse than you think. Believe me—I know, because for seventeen years, I’ve represented South East England as a member of the European Parliament, the EU’s legislative body. I was also leader of the UK Independence Party, or UKIP, where I lead Britain’s efforts to leave the European Union. To their everlasting credit, that’s just what happened on June the 23rd, 2016: The United Kingdom left the European Union. The world knows it as “Brexit.” Brexit is a statement of national sovereignty. Don’t misunderstand me: I like nations. I like borders. I like the people that live within those borders making their own laws. But I don’t like it when faceless bureaucrats make laws for nations they don’t even live in. But that’s what they do in the European Union. Imagine a Belgian telling a Brit how much he can charge his customers—or the reverse. The EU bureaucrats do this in a myriad of different ways, all day, every day. It is a conspiracy of the elites. Who are those elites? Well, they’re a bunch of self-important, overpaid, social engineers with useless college degrees who have never done a proper day’s work in their lives and have no connection with ordinary, decent people. I’ll take the good sense of an Italian farmer or a French baker over the arid intellectualism of an EU bureaucrat any day. And I say these things not as an anti-European; I love Europe! It’s a fantastic, exciting, great continent: different peoples, languages, and cultures. But these peoples, with their languages and cultures, have effectively been hijacked by a giant, ever-expanding bureaucracy: the European Union. People will say, “but isn’t there a parliament, a European parliament, that represents the people of Europe?” Well, yes, but this body has got no real power; it can’t make its own laws. Rather, the power resides with the European Commission. They’re unelected and they can’t be removed, and that’s how absurd the whole thing is. The European Parliament meets in Brussels. At least, that’s what I thought when I was elected there. But once a month, do you know what happens? They load the contents of our offices and papers into big, plastic trunks, and they put those trunks on lorries, and they drive them nearly 400 miles down Europe’s motorways to a French city called Strasbourg where, for four days, the contents of our offices, and our papers, are put into a new office, and the parliament then sits there. Twelve times a year this back-and-forth happens, and this from an organization who say they want to reduce their level of carbon footprint! This, from an organization whose accounts have not been given a clean bill of health by the auditors for the last twenty years! This…a parliament? It’s more like a traveling circus. Brexit vote reactions and analysis | DW News

13:02
British Prime Minister Theresa May and her government face a no-confidence vote later today after lawmakers threw out her Brexit deal. It's been called the biggest parliamentary defeat in modern British history, and it casts even greater uncertainty over when, how and even if Britain will withdraw from the European Union. If May's government loses the confidence vote, it could trigger a general election and fresh chaos for the acrimonious Brexit process. But not everyone in London is afraid of that prospect. Meanwhile, reactions to last night's vote have been coming in from EU leaders. Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel seemed to give Prime Minister May some wriggle room for further negotiations. Scots react to Brexit vote

02:56
(25 Jun 2016) The European Union anthem 'Ode to Joy' rang out on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, Scotland, on Saturday, two days after the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union. Scotland however voted strongly to remain in the EU and the outcome of Thursday's vote is reigniting the question of Scottish independence. Standing under the statue of the famous Scottish philosopher David Hume, Tony Collins, a 32-year-old humanitarian worker based usually in Lebanon and bag piper player, sees a new independence referendum as guaranteed and sure to succeed. John Mcgauchie, a 57-year-old unemployed man, is angry at the political class and believes Brexit will lead to Scotland leaving the United Kingdom. Scotland voted in 2014 to remain a part of the UK, but that decision was seen by many as conditional on the UK remaining in the EU. Who do you think would win in a fight between the British Army and the European Army (air force, army, tanks, navy, nuclear, space, fuel, etc)? Which military do you think is stronger and smarter: The UK or The EU? Brexit ruling: UK can cancel decision, EU court says - BBC News

01:53
The European Court of Justice has ruled the UK can cancel Brexit without the permission of the other 27 EU members. The ECJ judges ruled this could be done without altering the terms of Britain's membership. A group of anti-Brexit politicians argued the UK should be able to unilaterally halt Brexit, but they were opposed by the government and EU. The decision comes a day before MPs are due to vote on Theresa May's deal for leaving the EU. MPs are already widely expected to reject the proposals during a vote in the House of Commons on Tuesday night. There is also speculation the vote could be delayed, with a government source telling the BBC cabinet ministers may be asked by No 10 to take part in an emergency conference call later. 09:27:56
THERESA May could be gone within 24 hours after her Brexit deal suffered the worst defeat in British history. The PM is set to hold a confidence vote in herself after 432 MPs voted to kill off the withdrawal agreement with only 202 backing her. What is the future of UK after Brexit?

02:40
2016 was a momentous year in Britain. In June, the UK surprised Europe by voting in a referendum to leave the EU. Prime Minister David Cameron resigned and was replaced by Theresa May, who says she will start the formal process of Britain's withdrawal from the EU by the end of March 2017. So what will happen to the UK in the coming year? And six months later, how do people who voted in the referendum feel? Does Brexit mean chaos for the UK? | UpFront

14:24
Brexit is less than six months away, and the British government is no closer to agreeing on an exit deal with the EU, despite another round of negotiations. A no-deal Brexit could result in food and medicine shortages in the UK, warned the National Farmers' Union and the National Health Service trust. Are some of these stories exaggerated? Or was the Brexit vote in 2016 a total mistake? And if public opinion is changing, should there be a second referendum? On this week’s UpFront, we debate Brexit and the prospects of a second referendum with Daniel Hannan, Conservative Member of the European Parliament and Lord Adonis, former Labour Cabinet Minister. "A second referendum would be utterly illegitimate," says Daniel Hannan, Conservative Member of the European Parliament (MEP) and a senior Vote Leave campaign committee member. He also added that he "would not vote in a second referendum". Lord Andrew Adonis, Labour peer and a supporter of remaining in the EU, asked Hannan to answer whether or not he was advocating that people boycott a second referendum: "Is [Hannan] calling for people who are in favour of leaving the EU to boycott a referendum, and therefore to try and make democracy inoperable in Britain? Is that what he's saying?" According to Hannan, "a second referendum wouldn't solve anything because the majority of people would boycott it on the perfectly valid grounds that it invalidated all of the promises made in the first one." "We were told repeatedly by the government, by the opposition, by all of the people now demanding a second vote, that that was a final decision, that there'd never be another go. So, it would be absurd to legitimise people trying to undo the promise on which the first one was taken," he added. But Lord Adonis voiced his support for a second referendum, responding to Hannan: "that's clearly an absurd proposition because the people can't betray the people. The great majority of the public now agree, polls show, that they should take that decision on whether or not we go over this cliff-edge, or whether we stop it and stay in the EU." In this week's UpFront, we debate Brexit and the prospects of both a suitable deal and a second referendum.
