005 - Water Resources In this video Paul Andersen explains how water is unequally distributed around the globe through the hydrologic cycles. Seawater is everywhere but is not useful without costly desalination. Freshwater is divided between surface water and groundwater but must me stored and moved for domestic, industrial, and agricultural uses. Subsidized low cost water has created a problem with water conservation but economic changes could help solve the problem. Do you speak another language? Water resource management is the activity of planning, developing, distributing and managing the optimum use of water resources. It is a sub-set of water cycle management. Ideally, water resource management planning has regard to all the competing demands for water and seeks to allocate water on an equitable basis to satisfy all uses and demands. As with other resource management , this is rarely possible in practice. Much efforts in water resource management is directed at optimizing the use of water and in minimizing the environmental impact of water use on the natural environment. The water from the river is collected and flows through the dam. The water flows the turbine which rotates and gets converted into electricity. This electricity is therefore used for various domestic purposes. 50% of the water is used for domestic purposes, and other 50% of the water flows again to the dam. This process takes place again and again as a cyclic process.

"Water is essential for life," states Barb Cosens in the new short documentary, Water & Governance. Water resources across the United States have become points of conflict for humans and non-humans who depend on water for life. But how did it get to this point? This question drove several legal scholars, human geographers and ecologists to work across disciplines to seek solutions. Watch as the Adaptive Water Governance team works to better understand the implications of water management decisions and work towards developing a set of tools to help society navigate a more sustainable future. This film was developed by the National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC), a funder of the Adaptive Water Governance pursuit. SESYNC brings together the science of the natural world with the science of human behavior and decision-making to find solutions to complex environmental problems. Nigeria is endowed with enormous water resources estimated at 319.2 billion cubic metres of surface and groundwater which ordinarily should support irrigation, agriculture, transport and energy. But despite this enormous water potential, water use has been poorly managed and under developed. Experts are therefore calling for and integrated water resource management policy in nigeria.

Sarah Null, Assistant Professor, Department of Watershed Sciences, Utah State University. [email protected] Climate change, population growth, aging infrastructure, and changing societal values alter how water must be managed in the 21st Century. This talk summarizes recent research modeling hydroclimate change for urban, agricultural, and environmental water users and highlights potential adaptations. As snowmelt-dominated runoff shifts to rainfall-dominated runoff in mountain regions, streamflows peak in winter instead of spring. This affects irrigators and some municipal water users with season-dependent water rights, including the City and County of San Francisco, and water users in the Rio-Grande and South Platte River Compacts. Instream flows for environmental protection will likely be disproportionally reduced with climate change. Dam removal is also evaluated as a potential river restoration approach. Results quantify fish habitat gains from removing dams against water supply and hydropower production losses, highlighting the declining value of reservoir storage when systems are limited by precipitation. Improving water conveyance can sometimes substitute for water storage in storage-rich watersheds. Results are presented for California’s Tuolumne watershed, with some preliminary results for Utah. These findings suggest that hydroclimatic uncertainty can be partially accounted for with simple modifications to existing operating rules for reservoirs, though other approaches are also likely needed. Sarah is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Watershed Sciences at Utah State University. She received her BA in economics from UCLA, and both her masters and PhD in geography at UC Davis. She worked as a postdoctoral scholar at UC Davis’ Center for Watershed Sciences for 3 years prior to coming to Utah State University. Sarah’s research interests include water resources systems analysis for people and ecosystems, climate change impacts and adaptations for water resources, stream temperature modeling and monitoring, and improving information-sharing between policy-makers, water managers, and researchers. Field studies, mathematical models, and systems analysis are methods she uses to improve understanding of systems and explore promising solutions to problems.

United Nations - Water is a renewable but often limited resource that is frequently wasted or polluted. Isotope hydrology is a nuclear technique that helps countries to better manage water resources by providing information about water origin, age, quality and movement in underground aquifers. Isotopes of water are variants of its chemical elements. By studying isotopes of water, hydrologists gain scientific knowledge that helps to inform countries how to protect and preserve their water supplies. This is just a demo video, for more videos and full syllabus please contact us on 8287971571 or 0261-4890014. Water Resources: CBSE Class 10 X | Social Studies | Video Lecture WATER RESOURCES 1. We already know that three-fourth of the earth’s surface is covered with water, but only a small proportion of it accounts for fresh water that can be used. 2. This fresh water is mainly obtained from surface run off and ground water that is continually being renewed and recharged through the hydrological cycle. 3. All water moves within the hydrological cycle ensuring that water is a renewable resource. WATER SCARCITY AND THE NEED FOR WATER CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT: 1. The moment we speak of water shortages, we immediately associate it with regions having low rainfall or those that are drought prone. 2. The availability of water resources varies over space and time, mainly due to the variations in seasonal and annual precipitation, but water scarcity in most cases is caused by over – exploitation, excessive use and unequal access to water among different social groups. 3. Water scarcity may be an outcome to large and growing population and consequent greater demands for water and unequal access to it. 4. A large population means more water not only for domestic use but also to produce more food. 5. Industries, apart from being heavy users of water, also require power to run them. Lake Bogoria Basin is a source of livelihoods to many people who live in the area. Freshwater inflows from the Waseges River originating in the Upper Subukia and Nyandarua and the Igwamiti River which arises from Shamanek Forest in Laikipia west are important for the maintenance of water quality and quantity in the lake. In addition, this rivers are the only major source of water for communities who live in the immediate surroundings of the lake that sits on an arid area. It took the intervention of WWF-Kenya and Government agencies led by the Ministry of Water and Irrigation to bring the Upstream and Downstream communities to dialogue and build institutions that helped resolve the water conflict that resulted from over abstraction of water by the Upstream Communities. In the year 2001 the community organized themselves and formed a Water Resource Users' Association whose mandate is to manage the water resources and resolve water use conflicts.

Water Resources Management and Agricultural Water Management is key to Zambia’s development and commercialisation of its smallholders. To achieve this, there is need to use innovative tools and activities as advocacy measures. Through the AWARE programme, GIZ supports the Zambian Water Resources Management Authority (WARMA) to communicate the need for sustainable water resources management and agricultural water use efficiency. To ensure sustainable, inclusive and successful solutions, it is necessary that different actors work together and collaborate. Therefore, the video sought to: • Raise awareness among decision makers and water users about the importance of water resources management in the country. • Position WARMA as the forerunner in fostering sustainable water resources management at national, decentralised and local level in the sector and the country.

We are generating hydro electric current from the dam water. We can use the hydro electric current for houses, industries and other purposes. Converting saline water into drinking water. The water vapour cools down and forms the drinking water. Irrigation methods are used to conserve water. Drip irrigation is used in water scare area. It is very useful for plant growth. In this method, water is not wasted. We can use dam water for household uses such as washing, bathing and other uses. We can save the water for future and daily uses through rain water harvesting system. It is done by conserving water through under ground tank.
