Uncorrelated Investments Show with Prof. Thomas Schneeweis
Subscribe to this channel: http://www.youtube.com/OpalesqueTV This video touches on a controversial topic in alternative investing: Can an algorithm capture the "alpha" of the individual hedge fund manager with no other information than past returns? In this interview, alternative investment academic and algorithm developer Thomas Schneeweis makes the case that a certain portion of manager alpha can be reverse engineered by considering nothing other than past returns. One key is understanding how returns are correlated with market environment and then noting performance. Mr. Schneeweis, founder of the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst Association (CAIA) and the Michael and Cheryl Phillip Professor of Finance at the University of Massachusetts, makes the key point that alpha is often found in portfolio allocation. Towards the end of the interview, around 10:15, notice the interesting point that daily CTA data is the most interesting view into reverse engineering manager alpha. We also invite you to register at our new comprehensive Managed Futures resources website www.uncorrelated-investments.com where you will have access to free tools like: - Managed Futures Academy: Comprehensive educational resource - Video Tutorials: Understanding CTAs and their performance drivers - Video Portraits: Meet some of the most successful managed futures managers - Mark Melin's Industry Insider's Blog - Needs Analysis: This interactive test helps you to determine your managed futures knowledge level Remember to register at www.uncorrelated-investments.com. Thomas Schneeweis, Ph.D. is President of Alternative Investment Analytics, LLC. He is the Michael and Cheryl Philipp Professor of Finance at the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Massachusetts and founding Director of the Center for International Securities and Derivatives Markets (CISDM) at the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts. Germany: Homeless Students | European Journal
Affordable housing is becoming increasingly hard to find in Germany's big cities. The main reason is the euro crisis; those who can afford it are buying - because property is seen as a safe investment. Big cities like Hamburg have a shortage of affordable housing. Students and trainees are hardest hit, as are low-income families. Many of those affected have no choice but to stay with their relatives, and/or are forced to commute long distances. The authorities have pledged to invest in new building projects - but finding vacant plots of land in cities isn't always easy. Ever wondered how Warren Buffett became one of the world’s richest? Look no further. This is a video presenting the top 5 investing takeaways from Alice Schroeder’s autobiography of the man - The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life. 🔎 More from the greatest stock analysts out there 🔍 - Top 5 Takeaways from One up on Wall Street: https://bit.ly/2ueoNpD - Top 5 Takeaways from The Intelligent Investor: https://bit.ly/2CsuaGl Support the channel by getting The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life by Alice Schroeder (or any other two audiobooks) FREE by signing up here: https://amzn.to/2VkDKqf Top 5 takeaways: 01:25 1. The Power of Compounding Income 04:29 2. Be Very Skeptical of “New Paradigms” 07:17 3. Stay Within Your Circle of Competence 09:22 4. Use a Margin of Safety 12:03 5. Invest Where There is a Toll Bridge The personally revealing and complete biography of the man known everywhere as “The Oracle of Omaha”—for fans of the HBO documentary Becoming Warren Buffett Here is the book recounting the life and times of one of the most respected men in the world, Warren Buffett. The legendary Omaha investor has never written a memoir, but now he has allowed one writer, Alice Schroeder, unprecedented access to explore directly with him and with those closest to him his work, opinions, struggles, triumphs, follies, and wisdom. Although the media track him constantly, Buffett himself has never told his full life story. His reality is private, especially by celebrity standards. Indeed, while the homespun persona that the public sees is true as far as it goes, it goes only so far. Warren Buffett is an array of paradoxes. He set out to prove that nice guys can finish first. Over the years Warren Buffett treated his investors as partners, acted as their steward, and championed honesty as an investor, CEO, board member, essayist, and speaker. At the same time Warren Buffett became the world’s richest man, all from the modest Omaha headquarters of his company Berkshire Hathaway. None of this fits the term “simple.” When Alice Schroeder met Warren Buffett she was an insurance industry analyst and a gifted writer known for her keen perception and business acumen. Her writings on finance impressed him, and as she came to know him she realized that while much had been written on the subject of his investing style, no one had moved beyond that to explore his larger philosophy, which is bound up in a complex personality and the details of his life. Out of this came his decision to cooperate with her on the book about himself that he would never write. Never before has Warren Buffett spent countless hours responding to a writer’s questions, talking, giving complete access to his wife, children, friends, and business associates—opening his files, recalling his childhood. It was an act of courage, as The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life makes immensely clear. Being human, his own life, like most lives, has been a mix of strengths and frailties. Yet notable though his wealth may be, Buffett’s legacy will not be his ranking on the scorecard of wealth; it will be his principles and ideas that have enriched people’s lives. This book tells you why Warren Buffett is the most fascinating American success story of our time. Praise for The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life “Even people who don't care a whit about business will be intrigued by this portrait. . . . Alice Schroeder, a former insurance-industry analyst, spent years interviewing Warren Buffett, and the result is a side of the Oracle of Omaha that has rarely been seen.”—Time “Will mesmerize anyone interested in who Mr. Buffett is or how he got that way. The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life tells a fascinating story.”—New York Times “If the replication of any great achievement first requires knowledge of how it was done, then The Snowball, the most detailed glimpse inside Warren Buffett and his world that we likely will ever get, should become a Bible for capitalists.”—Washington Post “Riveting and encyclopedic.”—Wall Street Journal “A monumental biography . . . Alice Schroeder got the best access yet of any Buffett biographer. . . . She deals out marvelously funny and poignant stories about Buffett and the conglomerate he runs, Berkshire Hathaway.”—Forbes “The most authoritative portrait of one of the most important American investors of our time.”—Los Angeles Times

Government Investors and Firms, Professor Kateryna Holland Discusses Government Investment
Did you know that government entities frequently purchase equity stakes in publicly traded firms and not as bailouts but as ownership stakes? When the news of government investment are announced, there is an increase in the share prices of firms subject to such investment, suggesting that shareholders are on average happy about these news. Yet, in the sample examined in this paper shareholders lost over USD 14 billion at the announcement of investment from government entities with high likelihood of political interference (the Treasury, economic ministries, regional and municipal governments). To find out more about government investment, take a look at this video and Kateryna Holland’s paper titled “Government Investment in Publicly Traded Firms,” forthcoming in the June issue of the Journal of Corporate Finance.

Tom Gayner: "The Evolution of a Value Investor" | Talks at Google
About the Talk Tom Gayner is the CIO of Markel Corp, where he manages the company's investment portfolio. He talks about his journey as an individual and value investor. A recent Wall Street Journal feature on Mr Gayner's investing style mentions: "He has an outstanding investing record. He works only for Markel and doesn’t take outside clients, but every investor can learn from him.You never would know any of this [extraordinary success] from listening to Mr. Gayner. After a good year, most portfolio managers beat their chests even harder than they beat the market; Mr. Gayner’s 2014 report merely said, “our overall equity portfolio earned 18.6%,” without even mentioning that the S&P 500 was up 13.7%.Instead of trying to mimic the inimitable brilliance of Mr. Buffett, maybe more investors should emulate the common sense and patience of Mr. Gayner." About the Author Tom Gayner is the president and Chief Investment Officer at Markel, and a Director at Graham Holdings, Colfax, the Davis Mutual Funds as well as The Community Fund of Richmond and the Bon Secours Health System. Mr. Gayner, who is a CPA, worked as an accountant, a stockbroker and an equity analyst before joining Markel in 1990.

Dave Kranzler: This Stock Market is the Most Overvalued In History?
Jason Burack of Wall St for Main St interviewed returning guest, former long time Wall St bond trader, gold hedge fund manager, investment analyst/newsletter writer http://investmentresearchdynamics.com/ and co-host with Rory Hall of the Shadow of Truth podcast, Dave Kranzler. Dave writes the Mining Stock Journal and the Short Seller's Journal paid newsletters. During this 40+ minute interview, Jason starts off by asking Dave the probability of a March rate hike by Janet Yellen and the Federal Reserve and also the probability of the Federal Reserve raising interest rates 3 times in 2017? Dave thinks the Fed will do one token, quarter point interest rate increase like they did in 2015 and 2016. Jason and Dave discuss why Deutsche Bank turning over so much evidence proving gold and silver manipulation from a conspiracy theory into a conspiracy fact has hardly moved the price? Dave talks about Alan Greenspan now saying the US should go back onto a gold standard. To wrap up the interview, Jason asks Dave how he researches Junior mining stocks and junior explorers to find quality speculations that can produce hundreds of percent returns in 2-3 years or less. [WEBCAST] Why Tesla is a ‘Blindingly Obvious Short’
***This webcast was originally broadcast live on Hedgeye.com, March 22, 2018*** ----- Some of the world’s sharpest and most successful investors are bearish on Tesla (TSLA). But … who among them can say they initiated their short call within a week (literally!) of Tesla’s all-time high? Enter Hedgeye Industrials analyst Jay Van Sciver. Van Sciver called Tesla a “blindingly obvious short” on June 14, 2017 (in his original research note announcing his short call). Tesla shares reached all-time highs one week later. Since Van Sciver’s mid-June short call on the company, shares are down -20%. In other words, timing matters. What comes next for shares of Tesla? Dave Kranzler: Gold Stocks Looking Attractive Again
Jason Burack of Wall St for Main St had on returning guest, former Wall St bond trader, investment analyst, gold fund manager, founder of Investment Research Dynamics http://investmentresearchdynamics.com/ and co-creator of the popular Shadow of Truth podcast with Rory Hall, Dave Kranzler. Dave worked on Wall St for over 2 decades and his articles on Investment Research Dynamics are normally well written and quite insightful about the global economy, gold market, etc. During this 30+ minute interview, Jason asks Dave about the state of the global economy and if it's one big mess? Dave says calling the global economy a mess implies that things can be cleaned up and he believes things cannot be cleaned up. Dave expects a depression at least as bad as the 1929 Great Depression in the near future. Jason then asks Dave about the recent rally in stocks, copper, oil and base metals and if it was a short covering rally or if the bottom in oil is real? Dave thinks this recent rally in oil, copper, etc is 100% a bear market rally or short covering rally without any fundamental justification. Jason then asks Dave about the banks exposure to the oil market? Dave thinks the banks are lying to keep larger oil companies from going bankrupt and to make bank balance sheets appear much better than reality. Next, Jason asks Dave how he finds good shorting ideas for his new paid newsletter, Short Seller's Journal. Dave says he looks for macro trends where entire industries bomb earnings and Dave looks for the worst companies of an industry to short. Jason ans Dave then discuss why many prominent value investors also short companies besides buying bargain value stocks. To wrap up the interview Jason asks Dave about a bottom in gold and gold mining stocks and what the global economy and US may look like 10 years from now? Dave thinks gold stocks are very attractive to purchase on dips right now and Dave is buying juniors for extra leverage. Dave says he has no idea what the world will look like 10 years from now because of the totalitarian policies from politicians and bankers making things worse on basically a daily basis. Insider information helps analysts at big banks
When the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933 was repealed 11 years ago, financial institutions were allowed to engage in commercial and investment activities under the same roof. But a new study from Washington University in St. Louis Olin Business School finds it's difficult to maintain an information firewall - known as a "Chinese wall" - between those activities when they are housed in the same financial institution. The study "Do Bank-affiliated Analysts Benefit from Lending Relationships?" by Xiumin Martin, PhD, assistant professor of accounting at Olin, and Ting Chen of CUNY Baruch College, is forthcoming in the Journal of Accounting Research.
