The BIGGEST Mistakes You Can Make in the GRE Verbal Section: Text Completion Questions

04:59
If you're studying for the GRE Verbal section, you're probably thinking a lot in terms of vocabulary. While you do need a healthy vocabulary to be able to succeed on the Verbal section, test-takers who overemphasize vocabulary (and try to memorize as many obscure words as possible) tend to feel underprepared for the amount of critical thinking and work you need to put into some of the GRE’s questions, especially when they are Text Completion questions. How can you avoid this mistake? Veritas Prep’s Vice President of Academics, Brian Galvin, has the answer in this video. A Veritas Prep instructor since 2002, Brian was so inspired by his initial test prep classes that he left a dream job in sports to pursue a Master's degree in Education. Since receiving that degree from the University of Michigan, Brian has served as Veritas Prep’s Vice President of Academics, co-authoring the company’s GRE, GMAT, and ACT lessons. How To Master GRE Vocabulary | Expert Tips & Tricks

11:53
Begin Your GRE Prep: http://gre.prepscholar.com If you're studying for the GRE, you know how important a strong vocabulary is to your success on the Verbal section. Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence, which directly test vocabulary knowledge, make up about half of all Verbal questions. And that isn't taking into account the many Reading Comprehension passages and questions that feature difficult vocabulary that can impact comprehension. But more than that, based on PrepScholar research, we believe nearly 50% of Verbal questions tagged as “hard” by ETS test your vocabulary knowledge. These questions often feature words that are considered low-frequency (or not regularly used in everyday life) and known by few native English speakers and even fewer non-native speakers. So how can we overcome this major hurdle to reaching our goal GRE score? In this video, we'll talk about 1. The one thing more important on vocab questions than vocab itself 2. How to guess a word's meaning accurately (most of the time) 3. If you are going to study vocab, which words to study 4. And how to study vocabulary words for understanding, retention, and application

GRE Issue Essay: How to Write & Structure the GRE Issue Essay

04:17
In GRE issue essays, like other GRE essays, the test graders want to see that you can respond to the specific instructions of the prompt, that you understand the complexities of the issue, and that you can structurally organize your essay. Nick Bascom, a Kaplan GRE instructor, explains how you can do all this using a proven GRE essay template. You'll learn how to write a GRE essay and be able to apply this technique to other types of essays on the test. Knowing strategies for the various types of questions and material on the GRE test can help boost your score significantly. How to Master Your GRE Timing Strategy

09:54
PrepScholar GRE prep: http://gre.prepscholar.com Timing is crucial to doing your best on GRE Verbal. In this video, Erika explains how to master GRE timing! GRE Verbal Reasoning consists of two, 30-minute sections, each with 20 questions. This means that we get a minute and a half on average to solve each Verbal question. However, there are about a million different question types and formats on the GRE, some of which require more work than others. For instance, Text Completion questions with two blanks will take longer than Text Completion questions with one blank, and Text Completion questions with three blanks will take longer than Sentence Completion questions with two blanks. Similarly, the first Reading Comprehension question of any passage will be on your screen longer than any other question for the same passage, since we need to read the passage before we even start working on the question. And so on. All told, this means that we shouldn't stick to a rigid 90 second time limit for every question. So how can we ensure that we stay on track on timing? The first strategy is somewhat counterintuitive: invest time up top to save time later on. There are a few steps in the process of solving a GRE Verbal question that are more valuable than others and that make the following steps easier and quicker — we want to spend most of our time on those steps. The first valuable step is interpreting what the question is really asking for and what information we already have. Jumping too quickly into solving is a great way to miss out on the fundamentals of a question. For Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence, we want to invest our time in interpreting the relationships between the blanks or between a blank and another part of the sentence — is the word in blank 3 a synonym of the word in blank 1? Is the part of the sentence containing the blank being contrasted with the previous part of the sentence? For Reading Comprehension, we want to invest our time in skimming the passage and interpreting as we go *before* even looking at the questions. Then, for each question, we want to invest our time in interpreting what the question is asking for — the author's tone? The purpose of a paragraph? The meaning of a word in context? The second valuable step is predicting. On GRE Verbal, jumping straight into process of elimination is a guaranteed waste of time and a great way to fall into the test maker's wrong answer traps. For Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence, we want to make a prediction of what we would fill in the blank with if we had no answer choices. For Reading Comprehension, we want to predict how we would answer the question if it was free-response. These predictions don't have to be perfect — we don't need to find the perfect word or the most coherent answer. We just need a clear idea of what we're looking for in the correct answer. Then all we need to do is match our prediction to an answer choice — no need to spend extra time getting convinced by wrong answer traps. Now, how do we ensure that we stay on track for timing throughout the section? First, recognize that the GRE utilizes a minutes and seconds timer that counts down from the total amount of time per section to zero. This means that for each Verbal section, the timer will read 30 minutes and 0 seconds when we start the section and 0 minutes and 0 seconds when the section is over. This means that when the clock reads 20 minutes, 10 minutes have elapsed since the start of the section and we have 20 minutes left before the section ends. In your practice, make sure to use a countdown timer rather than a stopwatch to get used to quickly interpreting the timer you'll see on test day. The GRE also gives us the option of hiding the timer — this may be valuable if you look at the timer too frequently and distract yourself, but you'll never want to have the timer hidden for the whole section. Which leads me to the second point: Second, set checkpoints for yourself. Like we discussed earlier, each question takes a different length of time. This means that checking the time after each question will do nothing but distract us. However, we should check in on our timing occasionally. I recommend checking in 1-3 times during each 20 question section. I personally like to look after questions 7 and 14, at which points I want to be about 10 and 20 minutes into the section, respectively, or less. This means that I'll want to have about 20 and 10 minutes left on the timer, respectively, or more.

How to Ace the GRE: Top 3 Study Tips

02:24
Wondering how to ace the GRE? Chris from Magoosh GRE is here to give you the top three tips to make the most of your study time and get a great score on test day. Here’s how you ace the GRE: TIP #1. Spread your studying out over the week— don’t cram! Cramming can seem like a pretty minor study sin, but your brain can retain a lot more GRE knowledge if you study a bit each day instead of trying to cram it all into one day a week. TIP #2. Do a mix of question types every study session. Mixed GRE practice is crucial to acing the GRE. This means studying both math and verbal practice questions in the same study period. Why is this important? On test day you’ll be switching rapidly between verbal and math sections. Don’t let the GRE catch you by surprise! Be sure to study in the same mode as the test. TIP #3. Take a practice test every 10 days. It’s a fact: high scorers take practice tests. The GRE isn’t just a test of knowledge, it’s a test of performance and stamina. It’s very difficult to know how you will do on the test without taking full length GRE practice tests. Taking a practice test will teach you how to manage sitting for a long test and how to pace your question answering. A practice test every 10 days will give you a lot of practical GRE practice and let you see how you are improving. That’s it! The top recommendations for how to shape your study plan to ace the GRE. If you want more study resources for the GRE, visit us at http://gre.magoosh.com/ and get access to hundreds of questions and video lessons to help you in your test prep! GRE Expert Tips & Tricks | How to Beat GRE Quantitative Comparison

12:53
http://gre.prepscholar.com Want to ace the GRE quantitative section? This video explains EXACTLY how to answer Quantitive Comparison questions on the 2018 GRE. There are typically 15 Quantitative Comparison questions on any given GRE exam. With only 40 Quant questions, this means that ~38% of GRE Quant questions are Quantitative Comparison, so this question type accounts for more than a third of your quant score — that's a lot! So it's important that we master this question type. Unfortunately, Quantitative Comparison is a particularly weird question type. Here are the basics. Each Quantitative comparison question has the same structure: First, we have the question stem. The question stem provides us background information for the problem that we can assume to be true. The question stem can take many forms: it may be a sentence or sentences, it may be an equation, it may be a diagram, it may be some combination of the three — sometimes, when the problem requires no background information, there is no question stem at all Then we have two quantities, labelled Quantity A and Quantity B. Quantity A will always appear on the left, while Quantity B will always appear on the right. Like the question stem, a quantity can take many forms — it may be a number, a variable, an expression, a phrase, etc. Finally, each question has the same four answer choices, of which we can only choose one: Quantity A is greater. Quantity B is greater. The two quantities are equal. The relationship cannot be determined from the information given. So the goal of any given Quantitative comparison question is first to determine whether or not we *can* determine the relationship between Quantity A and Quantity B, and second, if we can determine the relationship, to do so. Why would the test ask us to do this? This isn't how we normally test math — why can't we stick to, 5 answer multiple choice questions, where one answer is correct? The reason is that these questions don't really test Math. In fact, none of the questions on the Quant section do — the GRE uses math, vocabulary, etc. as a foundation to test higher-level skills, like critical reasoning — the things that grad schools and future employers actually care about. Quantitative Comparison questions test a couple things specifically. One is determining the value of information to making decisions. We get a limited amount of information in the question stem and Quantities. It's up to us to figure out whether it's enough information to solve.Another is avoiding and testing assumptions, specifically by finding edge cases. A set of quantities that might be equal if we know that x is positive may not be equal if we consider that x may be negative. One quantity may be greater than the other in all cases *except* when y = 0. Have we considered what would happen if n were a fractional value between 0 and 1? And so on.

GRE Geometry 101 | Key Tips for GRE Quant

09:41
PrepScholar GRE Course: http://gre.prepscholar.com While there's no way to know exactly how many Geometry questions you'll see on test day, an estimated 15% of Quant questions are Geometry-focused — that's a significant amount! Of all of the subjects on GRE Quant, Geometry can be the most work for the least reward. Like all other GRE Quant questions, Geometry questions aren't really testing Math — they're using math to test more important concepts, such as critical thinking, working with limited information, testing assumptions, etc. However, you won't get a chance to demonstrate your ability in these important skills if you don't know the math being used to test them. For Geometry, that math is memorization-heavy — more so than any other type of Quant question on the test. A single question may utilize a variety of formulas and rules, from triangles to circles to quadrilaterals to lines and angles, and missing even one step in a multi-step problem can prevent you from answering the question. That said, there are ways we can make the most of these challenging problems, both in our study and in our approach to the problems themselves. The first thing to know is that while there are many rules and formulas to memorize, many can be lumped together for easier memorization. We'll go through five of the most helpful "sets" of rules here. First, we can find the area of any quadrilateral by multiplying the length of the base times the length of the height. This is also commonly expressed as length times width). Squares, rectangles, parallelograms, trapezoids — all length times width. Now for shapes with two different bases, like trapezoids, we need to find the average of the bases, then multiply by height, but the same general rule holds true. Second, if a three-dimensional solid has the same diameter throughout (in other words, it has the same shape on the top as on the bottom), the volume formula will be the area of the base times the height of the solid. So for any solid based on a quadrilateral, like a rectangular prism or a cube, the volume will be the length of the quadrilateral times the width of the quadrilateral, times the height of the prism. For a cylinder, the volume will be pi times the length of the circle's radius squared, times the height of the cylinder. For a triangular prism, the volume will be the one half the length of the triangle's base times the height of the triangle, times the height of the prism itself. This will not work for shapes with inconsistent diameters, such as cones or pyramids. A quick aside: for the most part, the distinction between length, width, height, base, etc. doesn't matter at all. We can call whichever side whatever we want, so long as we apply the formulas correctly. For instance. I could call this the length, this the width, and this height, but I could also call this the length, this the width, and this the height.

How To Score 339 out of 340 on the GRE (170V, 169Q)

15:55
Sign up free: http://gre.prepscholar.com Erika here, with PrepScholar GRE — here today to tell you how I got an *almost* perfect GRE Score, and how you can too. If you like this video, subscribe for more great content, and check us out at gre.prepscholar.com to learn more about what PrepScholar GRE can do for you. Before we jump into my personal strategies, it's critical to understand how the GRE algorithm works to get a perfect score. There are 6 sections on the GRE — the essay section, 2 20-question Verbal sections, 2 20-question Quantitative sections, and one 20-question experimental section, which may be either verbal or quantitative, OR a research section. The essay section and experimental section do NOT count toward your total score. This means you can totally bomb either section and still end up with a perfect score. The essay section is recognizable and will always come first. Similarly, if you get a research section, it will come at the end of the exam and be preceded by information that indicates the section will be unscores. HOWEVER, the unscored experimental section looks just like any other Verbal or Quant section and can come at any point in order. This means that if you get an experimental section, you will not know which section is experimental and won't count toward your score — we'll talk more about this later in the video. So the 2 scored Verbal and 2 scored Quant sections are the only sections that count toward your total score. The first section of each type is the same difficulty for everyone. The questions are pre-set, meaning you can skip questions and come back to them — again, more on this later. Depending on the number of questions you get right and wrong on the first section, you will get one of three second sections: an easy second section, a medium second section, and a hard second section. While the section you get will vary, like the questions in the first section, the questions in the second section are pre-set, so once again, you can skip questions and come back to them. Now for scoring. We start with raw score for each section — the number of questions you got right. Then, your score on each section is scaled based on the difficulty of second section. In essence, answering a hard question right gets you more points than answering a medium question right, which in turn gets you more points than answering an easy question right. Finally, slight adjustments are made for to account for variations in difficulty across different versions of the test. Now no one outside of ETS knows exactly how this raw to scaled score conversion works out, but from the data we've been able to gather, there isn't much room for error. For Verbal, you *may* be able to miss a single question across the two sections and still get a perfect score. Quant is even less forgiving — it doesn't appear that you can miss any questions and end up with a perfect score. What does all of this indicate about my scores? I got a 170 on Verbal. Verbal is typically more forgiving than Quant — there's a good chance that I missed one question across the two sections and still got a perfect score. Quant is less forgiving — my 169 score indicates I must have missed one question somewhere on the two scored Quant sections. However, for both Verbal and Quant, I must have scored high enough on the first section to move onto the "hard" second section. I also got a third, experimental Quant section, which I do not think went very well (more on that to come). Additionally, I completed the essay, which I got an adequate score on, but didn't prioritize. Neither of these impacted my total score. Onto strategy: getting a perfect GRE score relies on two things: good study and good test day strategy. We'll start by focusing on study.

GRE Reading Comprehension | PrepScholar's Master Guide

15:34
If you've been studying for the GRE, you're familiar with Reading Comprehension questions. Reading Comprehension questions make up about one half of the questions on the Verbal section. Each question is based on a passage. While some questions get their own passage, this isn't always the case — each passage may be paired with up to 6 questions, giving about 10 passages in total on the test. Passages with fewer associated questions will be shorter, often 1 paragraph in length, while passages with more associated questions may be several paragraphs long. The questions themselves may be multiple choice questions with 5 answer choices where only 1 answer choice is correct, multiple choice questions with 3 answer choices where between 1 and 3 answer choices are correct, and select-in-passage questions where you can select one sentence from the passage that correctly answers the question. A common piece of advice floating around is to read the question on the screen before reading the passage — that way you can look for the answer while you're reading. If you're on a passage with exactly one question associated with it, that's great advice! However, if we're on a passage with multiple questions, this is actually an actively harmful strategy. Why is this? When we read the passage looking for the answer to a specific, we don't pay attention to other key elements in the passage. This means that when the next question comes up, it's likely to be about one of the elements we didn't pay attention to, and we aren't ready for it. This forces us to read through the passage again and again for each question. This slows us down *and* disadvantages us on general questions, which require a broader understanding of the passage as a whole and aren't easy to read for quickly. So for each passage, look for the little bar above the passage that says which questions are based on the passage. If the bar tells you that only one question is based on the passage, go ahead and read the question stem first — but not the answer choices (more on that later). If the bar tells you that two or more questions are based on the passage, read the passage before looking at the first question. But how do we read the passage? Well, if we've got a one-question passage, we can go ahead and read for the answer, varying how we read based on what the question is. But what about for a multiple-question passage, especially one with several paragraphs? For these passages, we want to skim.

Tips and Tricks for getting Top Scores in GRE-How to Prepare for GRE Test

07:59
The crux of GRE exam is practice, diligence and of course memory. Believe me the memory of yours will come handy as it has never had. You can opt for any two options in GRE. It can be general GRE where you will be sitting for two papers, Quantitative and Verbal Ability. The other is you can take subject GRE, where you can sit for an additional paper as well. GRE will help you get into the top 10 colleges (Stanford, Gatech, UMich, UIUC., etc.). Keeping a backup career option is important. Give your best to go to the U.S.A. Now coming to preparation, how long will it take? It really depends on your potential. 6 months is a decent time for preparation. Since GRE is round the year exam, you can take it anytime you feel like. There is a considerable amount that you have to pay to book your exam slot for GRE. Remember that you can postpone your date (incase you feel you are not prepared), in that case again you will have to rebook with the same amount. So please book your slot, only when you are confident of cracking it. Quantitative Ability: Do not aim at anything lesser than 800 in Quant. It is because, Quant is the section where you can max your score. Aim at 800 and get it. Believe me the Quant section is easier than anything else. Do barron tactics for 3 or 4 days. Do not prepare all day for Quant. The 30 minutes you prepare, concentrate well. That is enough. After doing barron tactics, solve bigbook - one section every day (it takes 30 minutes). Then correct it. Analyse your performance after some time. You have to do "some" Quant daily for about two months. Do the tests in a specified time of the day daily. Analyze it in a specified time of day. That is the kind of groove you need to get yourself into. In the meantime, document your results daily. You may take a two- or three-day break from Quant (merely reviewing the formulas briefly), and then repeat the exact same bigbook tests in the same order. This time see if you can solve a section in 2/3rds of the time allotted, i.e., in a maximum of 20 minutes. Solve more sections each day than before. Compare the new results with previous results you recorded. Are you making the same mistakes again, or new ones? Even on questions where you did not commit mistakes both times, see if you can find a faster, shorter way of solving the problems. If you repeat your mistakes, it means that you need to work on that type questions more. Learn new tactics for those. See what is the best tactic for a problem. Work systematically. This way, within 80 or 90 days. Now, go to the real tests. Take Kaplan CD, see what tactics he suggests, see if there is anything you did not know. Likewise do Princeton. And don't spend too much time on these. So spend more time on verbal. That does not mean "stop Quant". Review briefly every day. Verbal Ability Verbal ability is the most important section of the test and deserves considerable preparation. To put it in a single word, you should try and be the word "discipline" itself. Begin with "Norman Lewis". Develop a love for words. Enjoy words. Only then you can be successful with Verbal. Learn words to learn them understand them, then use them. Not for marks. If you begin to develop a love for words, it will ultimately fetch you not only marks, and also a sense of well being, of having been enriched and improved. So, begin with norman lewis. Do 1 section(or 2 at the most) everyday(It will take you 10 to 15 minutes per section). Do the tests given in it seriously. NOT frivolously. Meanwhile, begin to work with Barron. It is strictly not advisable to cramm 100’s odd unconnected words everyday. . It won't help. You will remember nothing. Look at its meaning as it is given in the dictionary Allot a definite time of the day each day. Learn not more than 30 words everyday. AWA The last section is an essay writing portion which comes with a difficult topic. So be young and original. Ask help from your teachers incase you are taking GRE classes elsewhere. Ultimately, I feel that as Indians we have got good command over English so we will be able to crack the same. After the exam GRE gives you a chance to apply for three universities free of cost. So please go through the best (for you) colleges and apply after the exam. As you apply to the colleges, along with your score, the universities see another thing, i.e the SOP (subject of purpose). A clearly thought out SOP, a well written (or typed) application stating why you need to be admitted by the school, great references and punctual submission of documents and follow up should ultimately fulfil your goal. ***Disclaimer: This is just a training video for fresher candidates. GRE is not an easy exam to crack, it takes time to come up with a strategy to prepare for it. It will take you a few trial and errors to find that strategy to crack it and it will consume a lot of your time. And time is a luxury most of us don't have, it slipping from our hands as you read this. We understand the value of time and hence we have contacted the GRE toppers and curated their interviews. Watch some other related videos: https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=45YHw6DiDMg Jeevesh Narang from NSIT, pursuing his fourth year in Computer science engineering gave his GRE in the third year and scored a 329 with 169 in quant, 160 in verbal and 4.0 in AWA. He prepared from MJA Choachong http://www.mja.in/ For those who are not familiar with the GRE exam, it has three major sections: Analytical writing(has two sections), Verbal reasoning (has two sections) and Quantitative Reasoning (has two sections). Check out for How to prepare for GRE | Gre preparation in 40 days | GRE SCORE 330+ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sK3MZtrb7uY Analytical writing or AWA has two sections, "analyze an issue" and "analyze an argument". He advises you to practice a lot and read the questions carefully cause once you are halfway through your essay you can't really change anything. So, once you are clear about everything only then start writing. Focus on the spellings, if you misspell words in your AWA, that would be a negative mark for you. Also, don't get too emotional with the essay and write what is easy to write and don't try to prove a point just because your emotional compass points towards it. Quantitative Reasoning, popularly known as Quant is an easy section but don’t take it lightly. Don’t make silly mistakes, you need to score more than 169-170 anything less than that will not help you in GRE. It is a scoring section but you need to focus on it as well, to score well make a schedule, do 20-40 questions each day that would put you in a habit of solving questions quickly and also give you an idea of how the questions are. Check for GRE prepration in 40 days | GRE vocabulary | GRE score 330+ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OszvAi1Z_4I Verbal reasoning commonly known as verbal has two parts RC and TCSC. Being an engineer he focused more the verbal section. There's a myth that vocab is not important but if you want to score a 310 its fine but if you want to score above 325 or 330 you need to ace the verbal section for which your vocab should be strong enough. You at least should have 2200 words on your tips. When it comes to RC they are not really simple ones, they are really tricky and you need to read them carefully. You can’t just skim through them and go to the questions to answer them. You need to read each and every line because there might be something hidden and you might totally miss out on that detail. This can change the whole perspective. All the answer choices will seem very relatable at first but you need to eliminate the wrong choice using some techniques. You might get a 400 word RC and just two questions and a 100 word RC with 4 questions, so the section is really unpredictable in that sense. So, you need to practice a lot to eliminate the element of surprise and tackle all types of RCs.TCSC is a scoring section with a straightforward method of scoring, if you know the vocab you can ace it, otherwise you are gonna lose points. We hope this video is helpful for you and please share any suggestions you have. Ask all your questions in the comment section, we will try to get back to you as soon as possible. Also, you have any experience make sure you share them as well! Keep up with our channel for more videos. GRE Quant: How To Score A Perfect 170 👌 | GRE Math Tricks (Advanced) 🤩

36:25
A 330+ in the GRE is a dream for everybody. But the verbal section leaves us all confused and worried! How do we ensure a high GRE quantitative score? The answer- By scoring as high as possible in the GRE Quant section. Follow these strategies to Get 170/170 in Quant Section and GRE study tips. 📺 About the Video How to score 170 in GRE quant? With a few careful GRE quantitative tricks and techniques, Test Preparation Review, practice questions and following the GRE math lessons you can ensure high score overall! Dust off your math skills! Which of us here does NOT want a centum? A perfect score on the GRE Math, especially considering most of you are looking at applying to top universities. But there’s always the fear that this just isn’t possible. Even the best, the brightest of us wonders if a perfect 170/170 on the GRE quantitative is possible. We’re here to break this fear, to tell you it is possible. This fear would appear justified. It’s very easy and quite common to make silly mistakes on GRE exam. Somehow we’ve internalised that a perfect GRE quantitative score is just not possible. Let’s change that. The ETS tends to lay more weightage on arithmetic and data analysis. By this we mean, suppose you have twenty questions in each section, you might have close to ten or fourteen questions only on arithmetic and data analysis. The remaining questions will be divided between algebra and geometry, so prepare well, focus more on these two topics in your GRE preparation. That doesn’t mean that you just have to ignore algebra and geometry. You have to go through this because we’re looking at nothing less than 170. Why? All of the tough or difficult questions on the GRE quant are taken from these two topics. Also, focusing on arithmetic will make learning algebra easier by because algebra is nothing but arithmetic with variables. For Geometry, you have to play around with figures, visual interpretation. Look at the figure, read the question and try to interpret it. A large part of how well you perform on the GRE Math will have to do with your understanding of the underlying concepts being tested. With more tips it is easy to crack GRE and be the topper. Get the free quant material as ebook for easy revison.
