In what ways could the development of such a resource be of concrete value for teacher education and professional development? In the webinar, participants are introduced to the online guide to many existing instruments that describe teacher competences. How to Find the Right Personal Language Teacher? - OUINO™
The internet has lots of amazing resources to help you learn languages and you can learn a lot on your own. But at some point in your language-learning journey, you'll need to start speaking with real people. In the past, this could potentially be a problem. But we are lucky enough to live in an era where we can speak with people from all over the world in a few clicks. Having online conversations is an amazing way to improve your skills and it's accessible to anyone with a reliable internet connection. In this post, we will talk about selecting a personal teacher and give you a few tips on how to get the most out of your online sessions. How to Spend Your Time with Your Teachers. You should be really clear about your goals with your online sessions. Will the teacher be your main method to learn languages? Or are you following another lesson plan like Ouino, and simply want to practice your speaking skills? Having a clear idea of your goals will help you make a good decision on who to choose as your personal teacher. There are so many great resources out there to learn languages. In our opinion, we believe it's best to learn what you can on your own and use personal teachers to practice your speaking skills, which is a very important part of language learning. Having an interesting conversation is about the only thing you can't do on your own, so dedicating most of your time with your personal teacher to simply speak in your new language is the way to go. Make Sure Teachers Make You Talk. Some teachers are great to listen to; they can talk about captivating anecdotes for hours. This makes them very interesting, but it's also important to keep your goal in mind. Are you practising your speaking skills? Remember that you can watch movies or listen to great audiobooks in your car to practice your listening skills at anytime. The goal here should be to practice your speaking skills as much as possible. Some teachers are great at asking questions and making you talk. Sure, it certainly makes the conversation more difficult for you, but it also means that you're making more progress. Asking lots of questions is a very important quality to have for a language teacher. If you talk almost nonstop for a full hour, you will be exhausted at the end of the conversation, but the amount of progress you'll make is incredible. Try to find a nice balance in the conversation. Make Sure They Are Good at Correcting Your Mistakes. We believe that this is one of the hardest things to find in a teacher. Many teachers don't like telling their students when they make mistakes; as long as they understand, they let most of them fly. On the other hand, some teachers will point out every single little mistake you make and it can get annoying and non-productive. A great teacher will know how to identify your skill level, point out the most important mistakes you make, and the ones you make repeatedly. You can also help your teacher and let them know if they are correcting you too much or too little for your taste. Learn to work with your teacher. Choosing Between Certified Teachers and Tutors. On many websites, you can choose between certified teachers and tutors. Certified teachers have experience teaching and are usually very qualified, but they are also more expensive. Tutors don't necessarily have all the teaching expertise outside of the website, but they are great to help you practice your speaking skills nonetheless. From our experience, a higher hourly rate doesn't always indicate a better experience. We believe that it's best to find someone you truly connect with. Having meaningful and enjoyable conversations is one of the best things you can do. If you enjoy what you do for language learning, you are sure to make a lot of progress. The Importance of Trying Different Teachers. Most teachers on these websites are simply awesome. You may get along great with the first teacher you speak with, but we recommend trying many teachers to experience the different techniques they may have to offer. You can then make your own idea of what makes a good teacher for your needs. Whatever you do, make sure they make you feel comfortable. You will likely be very nervous before taking a lesson. The anxiety may even make you want to cancel the session. This is completely normal. Learn to push through the initial anxiety because once the lesson starts, a lot of that stress goes away. Your teacher should know how to make you feel calm and offer you a safe learning environment. Remember that the conversations should be fun, so it's nice to have things in common as well... A Career in Teaching - Resource Teacher in Learning and Behaviour (JTJS62012)
Abby from Bream Bay College joins Kerrie Lomas to find out about the role of a Resource Teacher: Learning and Behaviour (RTLB). Kerrie explains her varied role involves supporting teachers and working with students who may have learning or behavioural problems reach their full potential. Kerrie moved into this role after a career as a primary and secondary school teacher and after gaining additional qualifications. She works with four primary and one secondary school in the Northland region and could be assisting students, teachers, schools or communities in her role. At One Tree Point School, Kerrie and Abby meet with a teacher who Kerrie has been working with who wants to find alternatives to using his voice in the classroom to direct his students. A session around non-verbal cues was undertaken and implemented and Kerrie is keen to find out if that has helped. Communication, listening to others, being open to new ideas and a knowledge of current research are just some of the skills needed for this role which requires a minimum of five years teaching experience and a post-graduate qualification. Learn Any Language Without a Teacher, Part 1: Technique over Resources
When learning a new language by yourself, your study technique makes a much bigger difference than the resources you use. Using our technique of speaking each new word out loud and in a complete sentence will improve your vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency all at the same time. You can use this technique with many different resources: books, study guides, internet sites, dictionaries, etc. While some resources may be better than others, especially internet sites with a button you can click to listen to a native speaker pronouncing the new words you are learning, proper technique makes a much bigger difference than the quality of the resource you use. This is the first in a series of five short videos in English about how to learn any language without a teacher. All five videos are also available in Spanish, Portuguese, and Arabic.

TEACHING TIPS: This is the folk song "Sally Go Round the Sun" done three ways. The first way is to sing it with students holding hands and walking in a circle, then changing direction on the word "boom." The second way is to sing the song in your head and keep the beat with your feet and again change direction on the word "boom." This is great for kindergarten and first grade. The third way is to sing it as a three-part canon with three circles. The circles start walking in the same direction as they start to sing, and then change direction at different times as they each get to the "Boom." The words we sang are "Sally go round the sun/Sally go round the moon/Sally go round the chimney pot/Every afternoon. Boom!" Alternative lyrics are "Sally goes round the sun, Sally goes round the sun, Sally goes round the sunshine every afternoon. Boom!"

Let's take a look. In most games of KLOO, you are dealt seven cards. To score points, you need to make a foreign sentence. The longer the sentence, the more you score. But it's really easy. To start your sentence, you play a red card. With red cards, we get to play with pronouns and verbs. To build your sentence, you just need to follow the colojured arrows. So we are learning grammar too. So we play a blue card next. That's a noun with its article in agreement. We can play yellow or green card next. We're going to play yellow. That's an adjective. Now, a greed card. Green cards are connected to make our sentence longer. We can now play another blue card now, and another yellow. There's more gender agreement here. We can also play a purple card here. So we learn great expressions too. We also get clues to translate words we don't know. In this way, we use discovery learning to build vocabulary as we play. You would score a lot of points for this sentence, and learned a lot of language too. And this is just one hand. How much language do you need in order to start playing KLOO? None. You can play and learn as an absolute beginner, or even if you're more advanced. Just be ready for how fast you learn. What about vocabulary? What sort of words will you learn? Each deck covers particular language themes such as people, places, clothes, everyday objects and eating and drinking. And with every deck, you can make three million sentences. That's a lot of language and a lot of fun. KLOO, the multi-award winning MFL game that packs a lot of language. Find out more http://kloogame.com To browse games visit http://kloogames.com About KLOO as an MFL Resource KLOO provides fun language resources and games for schools. In the UK KLOO games are ideal for key stage 2 and key stage 3 French and Spanish. KLOO language Games are available in French, Spanish and Italian.
