The analysis on how much money we're spending to generate the traffic and here's what's crazy, most people don't realize this, we generate, let's say a million visitors a month on Neil Patel. Do you know what the cost to get there is with video, production, podcasting, blogging, promotion, ads, link building? $110,000 a month. That's what it averaged out to for 2017. Here are my marketing strategies for 2018. I just bought a blog in the marketing space for a half a million bucks. They get a million visitors a month, and it's cheaper to spend money acquiring people who already have the traffic. So in 2017, I bought Uber Suggest, I think it was around 140 grand. They had very little traffic. I 381 redirected the site, traffic increased and guess what happened? Nothing. I hoped that my traffic would go through the roof, but nothing happened. Uber Suggest was a good acquisition and what I ended up learning from that is, who cares about links? Don't buy anything for the links. Buy it purely based off of traffic and just pay a simple metric. If Uber Suggest has roughly 200,000 visitors per month, I paid a hundred and something; I would have paid 200 grand, the money didn't matter. For a blog that I just spent half a million on, their traffic ranges. On a horrible month, they'll get around 800,000 uniques. In a perfect month, they'll get around, like, 1.2, 1.3 million uniques, and all I'm doing right now is buying as many blogs as possible. My marketing strategy for 2018 is to buy blogs based on of traffic. I look at the top posts that they have and how qualified their visitors are and determine if I can successfully monetize their content. I don't even care if they have revenue. If they don't have revenue, even better. The problem with Search Engine Journal is that they have conferences, they have advertising, and they have contracts for all of it. I don't care for any of that. I just want the traffic. So when you buy all these people for traffic and then you put it into your monetization flow, you can quickly figure out, what is this worth? If I can't make my money back in less than 12 months, I will not buy it. The other marketing strategy that I use when I'm buying these sites is to look for blogs that aren't monetized well. The blog that I ended up buying for half a million bucks, they're not even making three grand a month. If you're not even making three grand a month, that's a good deal, right? They're like; you're going to give me half a million dollars for this? No problem. Another creative marketing strategy I'm doing right now, is trying to buy a really popular marketing tool. I don't want to pay them all the money they're asking for because they want well into the millions, and it isn't worth it. But, I'm trying to work out a deal where I give them X amount of money up front, let's say a million dollars, and then give them a hundred thousand a month over X amount of months or a hundred thousand a year over X amount of years. When I see inefficiencies in sites, I figure I can purchase them and double the revenue because they aren't optimized for traffic or conversions. So buy it for what it's worth, optimize it, and then use the profits to pay them out continually. That way you're not using all of your money and the business is paying, you may have spent a bit more money, but personally, you don't have to spend as much money, and that's my marketing strategy for 2018. My goal is to spend at least $5 million acquiring businesses purely based on their traffic. This is a very complicated world. It’s a very noisy world. And we’re not going to get a chance to get people to remember much about us. No company is! And so, we have to be really clear on what we want them to know about us. Now Apple, fortunately, is one of half-a-dozen best brands in the whole world. Right up there with Nike, Disney, Coke, Sony — it is one of the greats of the greats. Not just in this country, but all around the globe. But even a great brand needs investment and caring if it’s going to retain its relevance and vitality. And the Apple brand has clearly suffered from neglect in this area in the last few years. And we need to bring it back! The way to do that is NOT to talk about speeds and fees. It’s NOT to talk about bits and mega-hertz. It’s NOT to talk about why we are better than Windows. The dairy industry tried for 20 years to convince you that milk was good for you. It’s a lie, but they tried anyway. And the sales were falling. And then they tried “Got milk” and the sales went up. “Got milk” wasn’t even talking about the product. In fact, it focuses on the absence of the product. But the best example of all, and one of the greatest jobs of marketing that the universe has ever seen, is Nike. Remember, Nike sells a commodity. They sell shoes!!! And yet, when you think of Nike you feel something different than a shoe company. In their ads, as you know, they don’t ever talk about the product. They don’t ever tell you about their air soles and why they are better than Reebok’s air soles. What does Nike do in their advertising? They honor great athletes. And they honor great athletics. That’s who they are, that’s what they are about! Apple spends a fortune on advertising — you’d never know it….you’d never know it! So…when I got here, Apple just fired their agency and there was a competition with 23 agencies that…you know…four years from now we would pick one. And we blew that up and we hired Chiat\Day, the ad agency that I was fortunate enough to work with years ago and created some award winning work including the commercial voted the best ad ever made, 1984 (by Advertising Professionals). And…we started working about eight weeks ago, and the question we asked was, “Our customers want to know who is Apple and what is it that we stand for…where do we fit in this world?” And what we’re about isn’t making boxes for people to get their jobs done — although we do that well. We do that better than almost anybody, in some cases. But Apple is about something more than that! Apple at the core…its core value — is that, we believe that people with passion can change the world for the better. That’s what we believe! And we have had the opportunity to work with people like that. We’ve had the opportunity to work with people like you; with software developers, with customers, who have done it. In some big, and some small ways. And we believe that, in this world, people can change it for the better. And that those people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world are the ones that actually do! And so, what we’re going to do in our first brand marketing campaign in several years, is to get back to that core value! A lot of things have changed. The market is in a total different place than where it was a decade ago. And Apple is totally different — and Apple’s place in it is totally different. And believe me, the products, and the distribution strategy, and the manufacturing are totally different…and we understand that. But values and core values — those things shouldn’t change. The things that Apple believed in at its core, are the same things Apple really stands for today. So what’s the solution? Well seeing as you can’t do everything, the key is to focus on the highest value marketing activity for your business. The one that will provide the greatest returns, happiest customers, and position your business as the best in your market. And that strategy is content marketing. Focus on the best and ignore the rest. This simple motto may actually be the answer to your busy, overworked, and stressed out business self. So with all that said, how can you get started using a content marketing strategy in your small business, and do it as early as today? 1. Find Your Channel A simple task performed consistently will outperform even the most complicated marketing funnels used randomly or given up on completely when the eventual overwhelm and frustration kicks in. So the key is to start small, and build from there. And this means focusing on one channel and mastering it before moving on to the next shiny object. When it comes to finding the best content channel for your business the key is to take a look at your target market and try to find the one that best aligns with their content consumption habits. Does your audience read blogs, listen to podcasts, or watch videos? And where do they like to do this? On social media? Through email? Or by stumbling across it on their favourite websites? The key though is to find the channel you feel most comfortable on so you’ll stay consistent and committed to your content marketing strategy. 2. Find Your Voice Once you’ve found your channel it’s time to find your voice. And this means identifying you or your businesses unique selling proposition, or in simple terms, what makes you better or different from the competition. A common myth is that you need to be funny or entertaining or produce Hollywood style content that rivals the pros. But this simply isn’t the case. The main thing to focus on is value, and ensuring that your content helps, educates, and informs your market. Your customers don’t require that level of content sophistication, but they do require answers to their questions, and solutions to their problems. So focus on providing value, and being yourself which together provide an unequaled level of authenticity and connection. 3. Find Your Frequency So just how much content is enough? Well like most things in business and in life, you get back what you put into it, so the more time, money, and energy you’re able to dedicate to your content marketing strategy the greater and faster your returns will be. But there’s something even more important than just pumping out as much content as you can, and that’s focusing on being consistent. Because consistently and regularly producing content over time works just like compounding interest by building up your audience, increasing your perceived level of expertise, building massive trust, and creating a content database that will continue to provide value for months and years to come. So the key here is to find the right level of frequency for you and your business, and then do your best to stick to it, whether this is once a week, or once a month, though once a week is a good place to start. And don’t forget to always focus on quality over quantity. One more quick note, you’re going to notice some overlap between these, and that’s ok, just pick out the 2, 3, or maybe even 4 areas you think you’re going to be able to shine and focus there to start. Some items are going to be high level, and some more specific but this is intentional, because some things need to be looked at on both a macro and a micro level in order to really understand how they might be valuable to your business. The goal here is to flood your brain with possibilities so you can see what resonates and what doesn’t enabling you to dive in deeper later on the points you feel would give your business the most bang for your marketing buck. Because at the end of the day it’s less about the tactics and more about the strategy behind them, and remember, a well executed but only average strategy will massively outperform a terribly executed but amazing strategy because at the end of the day, it’s what gets done, and gets done well that actually matters. There are all first hand strategies that I see my clients use for success. You’ll find that some of these are strategies you don’t hear a lot. Which, I believe, makes them unique. Many think Facebook can’t be successful for small businesses. I still think it can be really, really effective for small businesses. But, you have to think differently. In this video I’m going to show you how to think differently with your Facebook marketing strategy. To understand Facebook, you have to look at Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook Post from January 2018. In the lengthy Post he mentioned that Facebook will be moving more towards personal connections. As someone involved with marketing small businesses, you have to do the best you can to make your involvement in Facebook about people. Let’s get into the strategies: 1. Create & Optimize Events Events are the best opportunity right now for the typical small business. You can reach many, many new potential customers with Events. Here are a few tips with Events: - Make a Video Cover. - Invite everyone who may be interested and encourage others to do the same. - Make Posts within the Event. 2. Make “People Based” Posts Facebook is about people, so the majority of your Posts need to be about…People! Check out Sporks on Facebook for examples of how they incorporate People Based Posts into their Product based Posts. 3. Live video Live video has been around for several years, but I’m just seeing businesses start to use effectively. Live video gets wayy more engagement and activity on Facebook than pre-recorded videos. What to go Live off? Make it about people! Customers, you, employees. Show off an action in the business. Just make sure to keep talking and/or make it about some action. Studies show that someone will now give a piece of content 1.8 seconds before they decide to keep giving it their attention or not. How long should the video be? However long you’re comfortable and can keep up the entertainment. According to Live video experts, peak viewership is about 20 minutes. But, don’t let that scare you, even if you only want to go Live for a minute, go do it! 4. Participate in Groups In addition al events, what else did Marky Z mention in his FB Post? Groups. Facebook loves groups. They also help your business get seen in Facebook notifications as well. When you participate in groups, remember to provide value, don’t just spam with your products or services. One thing I recommend to immediately separate yourself from everyone else in a group, is to post video questions or answers. Remember you’re no just spamming this group but also providing value.
