What is Social Network Analysis? by Prof Martin Everett

33:22
The focus of social network analysis is on the network of relations. A social network consists of a set of actors (also called nodes or vertices) together with a set of edges (also called arcs) that link pairs of actors. Since edges can share actors (e.g., the A.B edge shares an actor with the B.C edge) this creates a connected web that we think of as a network. Twitter Network Analysis: #APSA2016 Full Conference

08:58
Twitter network analysis of all tweets mentioning #APSA2016 from 8/31/2016 through 9/5/2016. I analyze influential nodes based upon degree, eigencentrality, and relationship to neighborhoods of discussion. Additionally, I examine summary statistics of tweet volume during different time periods over the conference, as well as performing content analysis to identify the most popular words from all tweets. Last, I isolate and highlight the location and structure of tweets containing the most popular words, then examine how messages with different content propagate differently throughout the #APSA2016 network. I want to thank those who have liked and shared the previous videos in this series, and I want to especially thank the APSA organization for their interest and encouragement. I hope you have all enjoyed watching these videos as much as I have enjoyed producing them. Please feel free to contact me on Twitter @EricVorst if you have any questions or if you are interested in collaborating on a future project.

Questioning the "Loneliness" of Lone-Wolves: A Social Network Analysis of Lone-Wolf Terrorists

35:22
Dr. David Hofmann Presented at the 2018 Atlantic Security Conference In this presentation, Dr. Hofmann will discuss his recently completed funded research (TSAS / Public Safety Canada) into the three different types of social networks formed by lone-wolves during the 24 months prior to the commission of their first act of terrorist violence. Dr. Hofmann and his research team gathered relational data to reconstruct the ideological, signaling, and support networks of two prominent lone-wolf terrorists (Timothy McVeigh and Michael Zehaf-Bibeau) in order to explore the extent to which lone-wolves may be influenced and supported by their larger social environments, and how lone-wolves communicate their intent to plan and commit acts of terrorist violence. This study is the first in the known literature to use social network analysis to better understand the relational dynamics of lone-wolf terrorists, and adds to the growing consensus among terrorism scholars that lone-wolves do not radicalize towards violence and plan their attacks in socio-political vacuums. After discussing the methodology and findings of the study, this presentation will conclude with some preliminary policy suggestions, and how future research of a similar nature can contribute to understanding important behavioural and social aspects of lone-wolf terrorism. Dr. David Hofmann is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of New Brunswick, a Research Fellow with the Gregg Centre for the Study of War and Society, and a Senior Research Affiliate with the Canadian Network for Research on Terrorism, Security, and Society (TSAS). His funded research focuses upon terrorism and political violence, illicit and criminal networks, threat assessment, far-right extremism, and leadership within terrorist and criminal networks. His published research appears in scholarly journals such as Studies in Conflict & Terrorism, Global Crime, Journal of Strategic Security, and the Journal of Criminological Research, Policy and Practice.

How social networks make us smarter | Alex 'Sandy' Pentland | TEDxBeaconStreet

11:24
By harnessing the power of our collective intelligence, can humans as a species work together to implement thoughtful solutions in an age of connectivity? In a world riddled with big problems, leading social scientist Alex 'Sandy' Pentland has heartening news. His research is discovering the power and pitfalls of social sharing on our decision-making. Pentland's field, "Social Physics" is a new way of understanding human behavior based on analysis of Big Data. By leveraging huge amounts of available consumer information and tracking idea flow, research can now make better predictions about human behavior and learn how to make minor shifts to generate massive change. Alex `Sandy' Pentland directs MIT's Human Dynamics Laboratory and the MIT Media Lab Entrepreneurship Program, co-leads the World Economic Forum Big Data and Personal Data initiatives, and is a founding member of the Advisory Boards for Nissan, Motorola Mobility, Telefonica, and a variety of start-up firms. In 2012 Forbes named Sandy one of the 'seven most powerful data scientists in the world'. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Analyzing Social Networks on Twitter

01:01:25
Twitter is rapidly becoming a "common carrier" of social media, a wire that transmits a variety of content rather then a social network in itself. Yet, Twitter data is rich in elements that yield to Social Network Analysis techniques and can produce unique insights into information diffusion. This course will cover: Harvesting data from Twitter via search and streaming APIs Decomposing Tweets into constituent parts Fast-and-frugal content analysis of tweets Deriving and analyzing social network data found in tweets. Analysing social, political, and biological signed networks using the frustration index

14:11
My talk at XXXVII Sunbelt 2017 Conference of the International Network for Social Network Analysis (INSNA) in Beijing Presentation abstract: The frustration index of a signed graph is a key to solving problems in different fields of research including social networks, physics, material science, and biology. In social networks the frustration index determines network distance from a state of structural balance. Although the definition of frustration index goes back to 1960, an exact algorithmic computation method has not yet been proposed. The main reason seems to be the complexity of computing the frustration index which is closely related to well-known NP-hard problems such as MAXCUT. This seems to have resulted in a distinct lack of studies on the frustration index of signed networks. We investigate balance in a wide range of real-world signed networks using new optimisation models and Gurobi solver. This study provides the first exact evaluation of the frustration index on various social, biological, and political networks with up to thousands of nodes and edges. We use well-known datasets from the sociology literature, such as Read's New Guinean tribes, and much more recent ones involving senate bill co-sponsorship. There are also signed networks inferred from students' choice and rejection as well as datasets from the biology literature including gene regulatory networks. We also analyse the frustration index of a political network of countries over time. The results show that exact values of the frustration index can be efficiently computed using our suggested optimisation models. We find that most real-world social networks and some biological networks exhibit a relatively low level of frustration which indicates that they are close to balanced. Mario Diani. Logic and Method of Social Network Analysis in Social Movement Research (NetGloW2014)

46:35
Mario Diani (University of Trento, Italy) analyses to what extent social network research can be applied to instances of collective action and grassroots political activism. Hence, social network as a research tool is capable of highlighting some crucial mechanisms and processes of individual participation in collective action. The talk pursued three main objectives: to identify the principal ways of how the idea, the concept and the methaphor of network are used in social movement research; to look at the conceptual relation of notions "networks" and "social movement" as well as the concept of collective action; to identify possible analytical methods for understanding collective movements. These three theoretical tools paved the way to analyse collective action networks. International scientific conference ‘Networks in the Global World. Bridging Theory and Method: American, European, and Russian Studies’ took place in St. Petersburg State University on June 27-29, 2014. The primary goal of the ‘Networks in the Global World’ conference series is to bring together networks researchers from around the globe. It seeks to unite the efforts of various scientific disciplines in response to the key challenges faced by network studies today, and to exchange local research results – thus allowing an analysis of global processes. The idea of 2014-year event was to discuss the key current issues and problems of linking theoretical and methodological developments in network analysis. Find out more at http://www.ngw.spbu.ru/
