1984 by George Orwell | Full Audiobook

10:57:13
Nineteen Eighty-Four, often published as 1984, is a dystopian novel by English author George Orwell. Concepts starting at 'The Book' 6:17:32 War is Peace 6:53:30 Ignorance is Strength 7:09:03 Party Structure 7:19:02 Doublethink 8:35:00 Nature of Reality 8:47:00 Martyrdoms 9:08:45 Power 10:02:45 Chestnut Tree Café 10:27:12 Newspeak Nineteen Eighty-Four, often published as 1984, is a dystopian novel by English author George Orwell published in 1949. The novel is set in Airstrip One (formerly known as Great Britain), a province of the superstate Oceania in a world of perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance and public manipulation, dictated by a political system euphemistically named English Socialism (or Ingsoc in the government's invented language, Newspeak) under the control of a privileged elite of the Inner Party, that persecutes individualism and independent thinking as "thoughtcrime." The tyranny is epitomised by Big Brother, the Party leader who enjoys an intense cult of personality but who may not even exist. The Party "seeks power entirely for its own sake. It is not interested in the good of others; it is interested solely in power." The protagonist of the novel, Winston Smith, is a member of the Outer Party, who works for the Ministry of Truth (or Minitrue in Newspeak), which is responsible for propaganda and historical revisionism. His job is to rewrite past newspaper articles, so that the historical record always supports the party line. The instructions that the workers receive specify the corrections as fixing misquotations and never as what they really are: forgeries and falsifications. A large part of the ministry also actively destroys all documents that have been edited and do not contain the revisions; in this way, no proof exists that the government is lying. Smith is a diligent and skillful worker but secretly hates the Party and dreams of rebellion against Big Brother. Orwell based the character of the heroine of the novel, Julia, on his second wife, Sonia Orwell. As literary political fiction and dystopian science-fiction, Nineteen Eighty-Four is a classic novel in content, plot and style. Many of its terms and concepts, such as Big Brother, doublethink, thoughtcrime, Newspeak, Room 101, telescreen, 2 + 2 = 5, and memory hole, have entered into common use since its publication in 1949. Nineteen Eighty-Four popularised the adjective Orwellian, which describes official deception, secret surveillance and manipulation of recorded history by a totalitarian or authoritarian state. In 2005, the novel was chosen by TIME magazine as one of the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005. It was awarded a place on both lists of Modern Library 100 Best Novels, reaching number 13 on the editor's list, and 6 on the readers' list.

Dice Media | What The Folks | Web Series | S01E01 - Arranged Family

24:55
'What The Folks' is a journey of how modern families are breaking stereotypes, overcoming generation gaps, and growing to love one another, despite having starkly different world views. The show encapsulates the familial struggles of Nikhil, a young man who is forced to live with his in-laws for a few weeks. Episode 1: Murphy’s law works on Nikhil, and everything he does from the moment he enters his in-laws' house, goes wrong. A huge blunder greatly upsets Prakash, his father-in-law. Strategy - How to make Dimension-wise Proper Notes: Kuldeep Dwivedi (I.R.S - 2015)

19:13
See the first video by Kuldeep on how to make smart short notes (fact sheet) first https://youtu.be/S-wLulmf5Yo. In the second part on note making , Kuldeep (selected UPSC aspirant, IRS; third position in Hindi medium in 2015) explains how to make multi-dimensional short notes for UPSC examination use esp for many micro topics for quick UPSC preparation and revision. Kuldeep explains the need for note making for candidates when there is so much material in the market about UPSC exam notes. He says that UPSC candidates lose time by reading the same issue in newspapers (and other sources) and it hampers retention of facts. It matters that important facts and dimensions about a news should be noted down (short notes). When you make short notes, you add on to the topic when updates on that news issue (such as the GST) appear in media; in this way you also revise the topic. This ensures that such note making is easier for revision, retention and addition of new facts and points needed for the exam. ART OF NOTE MAKING FOR UPSC EXAM—Kuldeep explains the art of notemaking for UPSC. Note making is not necessarily shortening the whole matter or article (it is not precis writing). The aim of note making is that it should be in the format most amenable to the Mains answer writing so that the frame is set in our minds (also see Vikas Divyakirti videos on answer writing in Mains at https://youtu.be/FbumMhxck88). Your short notes should not be more than one or two pages, Kuldeep says (unless the topic is really expansive such as a topic like judicial activism; then it could be three pages). Some other important suggestions he gives: you must constantly revise the UPSC notes you make; your notes should be in bullet form; make notes on micro topics (and not major topics; for example, consider the topic ‘globalisation and unemployment’ instead of the broad ‘unemployment’ issue for making notes. In the UPSC Mains exam, the topic of question would be more pin pointed one and not a broad topic. The UPSC syllabus is vast and one needs to study it in a short time. Kuldeep gives many tricks (cheat codes) and ideas on making notes which will be helpful for UPSC preparation particularly with regard to retention and revision. Janiya video me kaise banaye smart short notes pareeksha ki taiyari ki liye; UPSC exam ke liye kaise padhe? Ye short notes video state civil services (PSCs) ke liye bhi helpful hoga.

Jeremy Rifkin on the Fall of Capitalism and the Internet of Things

10:29
Economic theorist and author Jeremy Rifkin explains his concept of The Internet of Things. Rifkin's latest book is The Zero Marginal Cost Society: The Internet of Things, the Collaborative Commons, and the Eclipse of Capitalism (http://goo.gl/4estV2). Don't miss new Big Think videos!  Subscribe by clicking here: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Transcript -- We are just beginning to glimpse the bare outlines of an emerging new economic system, the collaborative commons. This is the first new economic paradigm to emerge on the world scene since the advent of capitalism and socialism in the early 19th century. So it's a remarkable historical event. It has long-term implications for society. But what's really interesting is the trigger that's giving birth to this new economic system. The trigger is something called zero marginal cost. Now, marginal costs are the costs of producing an additional unit of a good and service after your fixed costs are covered. Business people are all aware of marginal costs, most of the public isn't. But this idea of zero marginal cost is going to dramatically intimately affect every single person in the world in the coming years in every aspect of their life. There's a paradox deeply embedded in the very heart of the capitalist market system previously really undisclosed. This paradox has been responsible for the tremendous success of capitalism over the last two centuries. But here's the irony, the very success of this paradox is now leading to an end game and a new paradigm emerging out of capitalism is collaborative commons. Let me explain. In a traditional market, sellers are always constantly probing for new technologies that can increase their productivity, reduce their marginal costs so they can put out cheaper products and win over consumers and market share and beat out their competitors and bring some profit back to investors. So business people are always looking for ways to increase productivity and reduce their marginal cost, they simply never expected in their wildest dreams that there would be a technology revolution so powerful in it's productivity that it might reduce those margins of cost to near zero making goods and services essentially free, priceless and beyond the market exchange economy. That's now beginning to happen in the real world. The first inklings of this zero margin cost phenomenon was with the inception of the World Wide Web from 1990 until 2014. We saw this zero marginal cost phenomenon invade the newspaper industry, the magazine industry and book publishing. With the coming of the World Wide Web and the Internet all of a sudden millions of people, then hundreds of millions of people, and now 40 percent of the human race with very cheap cell phones and computers they're sending audio, video and texting each other at near zero marginal cost. So what's happened is millions of consumers became prosumers with the advent of the Internet. And so they're producing and sharing their own videos, their own news blogs, their own entertainment, their own knowledge with each other in these lateral networks at near zero marginal costs and essentially for free bypassing the capitalist market, in many instances altogether. This zero marginal cost phenomena, as it invaded the information industries, wreaked havoc on big, big industries. Newspapers went out of business; they couldn't compete with near zero marginal costs. Magazines went out of business. And my own industry publishing has been just wracked by free e-books and free knowledge and information. But, you know, the strange thing about it is at first a lot of industry watchers said this is a good thing because if we give out more and more information goods free and people are producing and sharing it free, these freemiums will stimulate people's appetite to want premiums and then upgrade this free goods and information by getting more customized information. I'll give you an example. Musicians give away their music free when they started to see this happen hoping that they would get a big loyal fan repertoire and then their fans would be enticed to go to their concerts and pay premium in order to be there in person. And then, of course, we saw this with newspapers. The New York Times will give you ten free articles a month, freemiums, hoping that you'll then upload upgrade to premiums and by their subscription service. It didn't happen on any large scale. This was very naïve by industry watchers. Sure, some people have moved from freemiums to premiums but when more and more information goods are out there nearly free shared with each other, music, film, arts, information and knowledge, attention span is not there to then want to go to the premiums when you have so much available already in the freemiums. French government resigns after economic bashing

프랑스 정부는 사임

01:32
French President Francois Hollande has ordered his prime minister to form a new Cabinet after the government resigned, following an ugly feud over the country′s economy. With more, we turn to Paul Yi at the News Center. Paul, it′s no secret that France has been struggling to climb out of this global recession... but it appears those frustrations have finally boiled over. That′s right. And we saw the tipping point on this Monday when Prime Minister Maneul Valls offered the government′s resignation. This after he publicly accused the economy minister for quote "crossing the line" in a recent newspaper interview. Minister Arnaud Montebourg had reportedly slammed the government′s handling of the economy,... in particular austerity measures, he said, were holding back France′s growth. According to the Le Monde newspaper, Montebourg criticized that Germany was trapped in a policy of austerity and called on his fellow Socialist Party members to stop what he called... the "excessive obsessions of Germany′s conservatives." The remarks quickly drew fierce criticism within the Socialist Party leadership and raised concerns of internal government conflict. The presidential office has not directly commented on the political feud... but issued a statement that a new cabinet would be formed by Tuesday one that would have a consistent direction. The fresh political crisis comes as Paris marks its 70th anniversary from the liberation of Nazi occupation in World War II. However, celebrations are expected to be cut short for President Hollande as he faces record low approval ratings and the second major government shake-up this year.

The Life and Tragic Death of an Undocumented Worker: Economy, Law, Labor (2002)

55:13
Jimmy Breslin (born October 17, 1930) is a Pulitzer Prize-winning American journalist and author. He currently writes a column for the New York Daily News' Sunday edition. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0038BZP08/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B0038BZP08&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=46be38bd6a39da21842679b5a226a2a3 He has written numerous novels, and columns of his have appeared regularly in various newspapers in his hometown of New York City. He served as a regular columnist for the Long Island, NY newspaper Newsday until his retirement on November 2, 2004, though he still publishes occasional pieces for the paper. Born in Jamaica, New York, Breslin was a columnist for the New York Herald Tribune,[1] the Daily News, the New York Journal American, Newsday, and other venues. When the Sunday supplement of the Tribune was reworked into New York magazine by editor Clay Felker in 1962, Breslin appeared in the new edition, which became "the hottest Sunday read in town."[1] He has been married twice. His first marriage, to Rosemary Dattolico, ended with her death in 1981. They had six children together: sons Kevin, James, Patrick and Christopher, and daughters Rosemary and Kelly. His daughter Rosemary died June 14, 2004 from a rare blood disease and his daughter Kelly, 44, died on April 21, 2009, four days after a cardiac arrhythmia in a New York City restaurant.[2] Since 1982, he has been married to former New York City Council member Ronnie Eldridge. One of his best known columns was published the day after John F. Kennedy's funeral and focused on the man who had dug the president's grave.[3] The column is indicative of Breslin's style, which often highlights how major events or the actions of those considered "newsworthy" affect the "common man". Breslin's public profile in the 1960s as a regular guy led to a brief stint as a TV pitchman for Piels Beer, including a bar room commercial where he intoned in his deep voice: "Piels—it's a good drinkin' beer!" In 1969, Breslin ran for president of the New York City Council in tandem with Norman Mailer, who was seeking election as mayor, on the unsuccessful independent 51st State ticket advocating secession of the city from the rest of the state. His memorable quote from the experience: "I am mortified to have taken part in a process that required bars to be closed." [4] His career as an investigative journalist led him to cultivate ties with various Mafia and criminal elements in the city, not always with positive results. In 1970, he was viciously attacked and beaten at The Suite, a restaurant then owned by Lucchese crime family associate Henry Hill. The attack was carried out by mobster Jimmy Burke, who objected to an article Breslin had written involving another member of the Lucchese family, Paul Vario. Breslin suffered major concussion and nosebleeding, but survived the ordeal without any permanent injury. In 1977, at the height of the Son of Sam scare in New York City, the killer, who was later identified as David Berkowitz, addressed letters to Breslin. Excerpts from these were published and later used in the Spike Lee film Summer of Sam, a film in which Breslin, portraying himself, bookends. In 2008, The Library of America selected one of Breslin's many Son of Sam articles published in the New York Daily News for inclusion in its two-century retrospective of American True Crime writing. In October 1986, Breslin landed his own twice-weekly late night talk show on ABC, Jimmy Breslin's People. However, because many affiliates had already committed to syndicated programming when the new season started a month earlier, the show was often delayed or preempted altogether; even flagship station WABC pushed it back from its midnight slot to 2 a.m., and would occasionally only air it one night a week. Disgusted, Breslin took out a full-page ad in the New York Times announcing that he was "firing the network" and would be ending the show after its Dec. 20 broadcast (at which time his 13-week contract expired).
