The module will examine the regulation of the financial markets in the UK and hence emphasis will be placed on the Financial Services and Markets Act, the Financial Conduct Authority’s rulebook, the FCA Handbook, other legislation for the UK and relevant EU Directives. Not all financial services regulation issues will be covered (for example, the module does not look in detail at banking, insurance, pensions, mortgages, asset management, or corporate finance). The module has a focus on regulation and hence will not deal with transactional issues in international finance.

How FinTech is Shaping the Future of Banking | Henri Arslanian | TEDxWanChai
While FinTech is revolutionizing the banking industry and giving millions of people access to financial services for the first time, new banking models are emerging with FinTech start-ups and tech firms potentially disrupting the status quo. But business schools and universities are not preparing future bankers for these changes, says FinTech thought leader Henri Arslanian. How can designers, programmers and creative thinkers help? Henri Arslanian started his career as a financial markets and funds lawyer in Canada and Hong Kong, after which he spent many years with UBS Investment Bank in Hong Kong. In recent years, he has been teaching graduate courses on Entrepreneurship in Finance at Hong Kong University as an Adjunct Associate Professor, and currently leads the first FinTech course in Asia. His latest book on Entrepreneurship in Finance will be published in late 2016 by Palgrave Macmillan. A member of the Milken Institute’s Young Leaders Circle, Henri is a regular keynote speaker globally on the topic of FinTech and hedge funds and currently sits on a number of finance, academic, civil society and FinTech related boards and advisory boards. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Sergei Shvetsov, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Central Bank: "We should make the Russian market convenient for equity issuers and create technologies that will make investment easy and convenient for the domestic investor. In this sense, the exchange should become a centre of self-regulation and involvement in the establishment of financial markets." 7. Mid of journalists and traders 8. Close up of computer monitor 9. Wide of opening ceremony STORYLINE: Russia's two main stock exchanges completed their official merger on Monday, hoping to increase transparency and liquidity and attract foreign listings. Although the ruble-denominated MICEX and the dollar-denominated RTS combined their businesses, stocks continue to be listed in both currencies, and the two indexes keep trading separately. The merger is part of the Russian government's plan to encourage Russian and foreign equity issuers to IPO their companies in Moscow, rather than London or other global financial centres. "We should make the Russian market convenient for equity issuers and create technologies that will make investment easy and convenient for the domestic investor," Sergei Shvetsov, deputy chairman of the Russian Central Bank, said at the merger ceremony. This is the first step that Russian authorities have undertaken to make Russia's financial markets more investor-friendly. Russia is also about to open a central securities depositary which will allow foreign funds to own their own shares directly, which will open the market to a larger pool of foreign investors. Officials have also announced plans to allow Russian companies to float 100 percent of their stocks abroad - up from the 25 percent allowed now. The 'Big Bang' : Brexit's impact on UK's financial markets | IG
As the UK celebrates the 30 year anniversary of London's 'Big Bang', David Buik looks at how the financial landscape has changed. He says the future of the UK’s financial markets after Brexit is ‘all about negotiations’, and that there are ‘wonderful deals to be done if there is a proper attitude’. Buik thinks exchange controls, LIFFE market, Big Bang and global IPOs are all examples of London’s financial prowess. He says because regulation has been tightened up, the UK is in a better position than anywhere else in the world. 30 years from now he thinks the ‘UK will have lost some of its business but not to Europe, to the US.’ He also explains why he is more concerned about political ramifications than Brexit. Market Failures, Taxes, and Subsidies: Crash Course Economics #21
This week on Crash Course Econ, Jacob and Adriene are talking about failure. Specifically, we're talking about market failures. When markets don't provide a good or service efficiently, that's a market failure. When markets fail, often governments step in to provide those services. Stuff like public education or military protection are good examples of market failures. So, what are some of the ways governments address, market failures? Well, it's funny you should ask, as we also talk about that in this episode. We'll get into taxes and subsidies and externalities and a bunch of other important stuff this week on Crash Course Econ. Global Financial Markets Tremble As Bad Economic News Continues for US
Global Financial Markets Tremble As Bad Economic News Continues for US U.S. Offers Foreign Aid to Countries Holding Billions in Treasury Securities The Congressional Research Service released a report last month, a copy of which Fox News exclusively obtained, showing that in fiscal year 2010, the latest year that data was available, the U.S. handed out a total of $1.4 billion to 16 foreign countries that held at least $10 billion in Treasury securities, including China ($27.2 million), Brazil ($25 million), Russia ($71.5 million), India ($126.6 million), Mexico ($316.7 million) and Egypt ($255.7 million). China is the largest holder of U.S. Treasury bonds with $1.1 trillion as of March, according to the Treasury Department. Brazil held $193.5 billion, Russia had $127.8 billion, India owned $39.8 billion, Mexico held $28.1 billion and Egypt had $15.3 billion. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/06/02/us-offers-foreign-aid-to-countries-holding-billions-in-treasury-securities/ http://www.foxnews.com/interactive/r/politics/2011/06/02/congressional-research-service-report-aid-to-securities-holders/ Dismal Jobs Report Fuels GOP Criticism of Administration on Economy Republicans continued to hammer Obama with an infamous chart pushed by his administration during the 2009 stimulus debate which predicted unemployment would stay below 8 percent and that, by this time, the rate would be below 7 percent. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/06/03/employers-add-just-54000-jobs-in-may-unemployment-rate-rises-to-1-percent/ Global Financial Markets Tremble As Bad Economic News Continues To Pour In http://truthiscontagious.com/2011/06/02/global-financial-markets-tremble-as-bad-economic-news-continues-to-pour-in U.S. Growth: Slow and Volatile http://www.nationaljournal.com/economy/u-s-growth-slow-and-volatile-20110601 As the U.S. economy starts to slow down once again, global financial markets are beginning to tremble. Over the past couple of weeks, all kinds of bad economic news has been pouring in. The ADP jobs report was a "disaster", the housing numbers are dismal, manufacturing has slowed way down and consumer confidence is dropping like a rock. The Democrats and the Republicans are bickering over the debt ceiling and this is causing a lot of uncertainty as well. All of this bad news is starting to spook investors. On Wednesday, the Dow was down 279 points and the NASDAQ was down 65 points. It was the worst day of the year for the Dow, and many are wondering what is going to happen next if we see even more bad economic data. QE2 is slated to end at the end of the month, and already the bond markets seem to be anticipating QE3. If the U.S. economy enters another significant downturn during the second half of 2011, IT SEEMS QUITE LIKELY THAT THE FEDERAL RESERVE WOULD ATTEMPT TO DO SOMETHING TO STIMULATE THE ECONOMY AND THAT WOULD PROBABLY MEAN MORE MONEY PRINTING!!!! http://www.thetradingreport.com/2011/06/02/global-financial-markets-tremble-as-bad-economic-news-continues-to-pour-in/ House prices in the US are crashing again. With 18 million households across the country on the verge of defaulting on their mortgage, how will the fall in house prices affect your mortgage? http://www.economywatch.com/economy-business-and-finance-news/seven-questions-to-ask-before-refinancing-your-mortgage.03-06.html
