Globally, agrifood chains consume 30 percent of the world’s available energy – with more than 70 percent consumed beyond the farm gate. In the Mediterranean region, an area with limited land and water resources where agriculture plays a substantial role, the effectiveness and overall productivity of agrifood value chains will be increasingly dependent on the availability and efficient use of energy and natural resources. Achieving the transition to “resource-smart” food systems will require better policy-making as well as a collaborative and proactive multi-stakeholder approach. What will that look like? There are companies trying to establish the space tourism industry, such as Blue Origin, Virgin Galactic, and Orion Span. Others want to mine asteroids for resources, like Deep Space Industries and Planetary Resources. And today we are going to explore 3 companies who are developing in-space construction technologies. Currently, space stations have to be cylinder shaped in order to maximize the volume capacity of the launch vehicle. But by constructing structures in space, it’s space structures only found in science fiction. And this takes us to the first company, Orbital Assembly. Orbital Assembly is the business arm of the Gateway Foundation, which is the organization behind the mega spaceport, The Gateway, more on that in a bit. So, Orbital Assembly aims to be the first Turn-Key Space Construction Company, designed to build any structure in space quickly and with precision. Orbital’s Chief Architect, Dr. Thomas Spilker worked for more than 20 years as both a scientist and engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and worked on NASA’s Voyager, Cassini, and Genesis missions. The company’s near-term goal is to assemble small to medium sized projects and they are currently developing drones that will be used for such projects. But in the long term, Orbital Assembly wants to eventually build a structure that is true, astonishing. They want to the build The Gateway which looks like it’s straight from a sci-fi movie. Here is a rendering of the Gateway next to the ISS and other space stations throughout history, it’s massive. The Gateway is a Massive Spaceport with artificial gravity that measures 488m wide and 76 meters deep. Orbital’s vision for The Gateway is to be a stopping point for people traveling to and from Earth. People traveling to Earth from colonies on the Moon and beyond will travel to The Gateway on what the Foundation calls true spaceships, and then they will travel between the Earth and The Gateway on shuttles. The Gateway will have a crew of 150 and have a guest capacity of 1,250. The Gateway has 4 main components, first is The Hub measuring 150 m wide and is where the control room, storage, and viewport is located. Second is the Shuttle Bay, the 120 m wide, two deck component that will facilitate transfers between Earth shuttles and lunar craft. The Bay contains 8 large cargo airlocks, 10 gates, and 14 activity pads to move spacecraft around. The third component is the LGA which stands for Lunar Gravity Area, which makes up the rest of the disk area measuring 300 meters wide. As the name suggests, the artificial gravity produced is similar to the gravity experienced on the moon which is around 20% of what you experience on Earth. The LGA consists of a large open-air gymnasium, a restaurant, a Japanese garden and park, concert hall, food court, and a casino. Beneath that layer, there is the LGA Habitation Area which is a layer of hotel rooms. And the fourth component is the Mars Gravity Area or MGA, making up the outer ring of the structure, measuring over 480 meters wide. Similar to the LGA, the MGA produces artificial gravity that is close to what you experience on Mars at 30% of the gravity you feel on Earth. The Faculty of Agricultural Sciences organized a Guest Lecture on Resource Conservation Technologies vis-a-vis Sustainable Agriculture on January 30 th , 2017. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Dharam Bir Yadav, Project Director, CCSHAU, Hisar. The topic was chosen because there is over exploitation of resources such as water, fuel, soil, labor, force and women utilized in production system of agriculture. Since, the cultivable area in agriculture has been shrinking by and by due to urbanization and change of land uses so a balance between the utilization of resources and agricultural production system need to be kept. This will lead to sustenance of agriculture for longer period. To conserve the resources, different techniques/technologies covered by the speaker were laser leveling, zero tillage or no tillage, green manuring, cover crops, residue management, sowing system (direct seeded rice) and integrated weed management. Application of these technologies or their integration will lead to optimum utilization of the above-mentioned resources which in turn will have a positive impact on production and productivity of different crop. By doing so, we can save irrigation water and fuel upto 30% while achieving the same target of productivity of different crops. In the end there was an interactive session with the students.

Desalination is an increasingly common solution to supply fresh water in many regions of the world where this resource is scarce. The desalination technology is fully mature and is present in all areas in the world with limited natural hydrological resources. Among all desalination technologies, Reverse Osmosis (RO) and Multi-Effect Distillation are the most internationally widespread technologies. The trend is intensified by climate change conditions, mainly in coastal areas, which seems to be already affecting the water cycle resulting in long periods of drought or natural resources scarcity. The desalinated water demand is constantly increased and the technology advance is focus on reducing the energy cost and increasing the unitary production and the water quality. However, desalination plants will always require energy. The energy consumption has been of special interest in the world of research and is the most important variable in operation cost of desalination plants. It has a direct impact on the costs reduction of the water produced. To remain a viable option in a world, renewable energy sources have to be used to meet at least part of its power requirements. In fact, most of the countries with water scarcity exhibit significant solar renewable energy sources potential. The coupling of solar energy with desalination technologies is seen as having the potential to offer a sustainable route for increasing the supplies of desalinated water. Sun Flyer 2 Completes First Flight with Siemens Electric Propulsion Motor DENVER, Colo. – February 12, 2019 – Bye Aerospace’s electric Sun Flyer 2 successfully completed the first official flight test with a Siemens electric propulsion motor February 8 at Centennial Airport, south of Denver, Colo. The Sun Flyer family of aircraft, including the 2-seat Sun Flyer 2 and the 4-seat Sun Flyer 4, aims to be the first FAA-certified, practical, all-electric airplanes to serve the flight training and general aviation markets. Siemens will provide electric propulsion systems for the Sun Flyer 2 airplane—the 57 lb.-SP70D motor with a 90kW peak rating (120 HP), and a continuous power setting of up to 70kW (94 HP). Sun Flyer brings the full promise of electric propulsion to the market with safe, practical and reliable electric aircraft. The all-electric operation requires no aviation fuel and results in zero emissions and significantly lower noise pollution compared to conventional aircraft. The sleek Sun Flyer design also features enhanced speed and altitude performance with extremely low operating costs. George E. Bye, CEO of Bye Aerospace, the developer of the Sun Flyer, said the initial flight with the Siemens motor went flawlessly. “The airplane performed exactly as planned,” he said. “My thanks to the entire Siemens team for their participation as we enter this next, important flight test phase of Sun Flyer 2 with the Siemens electric propulsion system.” Sun Flyer 2’s program application to the FAA was accepted under FAR 23 certification criteria in the spring of 2018. The Sun Flyer 2 prototype will conduct extensive additional flight test activities in 2019 and continue to work closely with FAA representatives on certification activities. Current flight test focus areas are propulsion system, envelope expansion and systems optimization. “This successful test flight is a proud moment for the Siemens and Bye Aerospace teams and marks a milestone in bringing the age of electric flight to life,” said Dr. Frank Anton, Executive Vice President and Head of eAircraft, Siemens. “The Siemens electric propulsion system offers a clean, cost-efficient and silent propulsion alternative to the flight training market without compromising performance or safety.” Globally, Siemens eAircraft technology is helping lead the aviation industry in electrification and hybrid propulsion, system integration, service and condition-based monitoring. The software allows contractors to get measurements from 15 to 20 digital blueprints at once, no download required. Contractors can color-code the blueprints within their web browser to calculate the area, distance and volume of the construction project. This allows for more accurate calculations of necessary materials and the total potential cost of the job. As content on the Internet has become more dynamic, the amount of bandwidth we consume has skyrocketed, driving innovation in delivery and storage technology. This is a look at the future of Internet infrastructure. The activity you’re engaged in right now — streaming a video — is driving massive growth in the amount of data that’s being transferred. For perspective on how much data we’re consuming, 853 1.2 megabyte 5.25 inch floppy disks — like what Oregon Trail used to come on — equals 1 gigabyte. And there are 1,000 gigabytes in the 1 terabyte hard drives many of us have in our computers. In 2016, global IP traffic passed a zettabyte for the first time. That’s one billion terabytes. Internet video accounted for half that bandwidth. But in 2021, total worldwide traffic is projected to nearly triple to 3.3 zettabytes—that’s 3.3 trillion gigabytes of data. More than two thirds of that traffic will be Internet video, with IPTV like netflix taking up another 22%. To keep up with the increasing demand for data and high-speed connections, service providers have been driven to expand their network infrastructures and initiate projects like Google Fiber, heating up the competition. As a result, installation of large capacity 100Gb ethernet equipment grew 450% year-over-year in 2016. Google is also planning to use wireless alternatives that can deliver gigabit per second speeds to reach remote areas where it’s too expensive to set up Fiber. The other advancement we’ll see is the development of ultrafast 5G networks. In 2016 the Obama administration announced a $400m, seven year public-private partnership — spearheaded by the National Science Foundation — to jumpstart the effort. 5G will handle 1,000 times the traffic at 10 times the speed of existing 4G and LTE networks. Not only will you be able to download an HD movie in under 1 second, but it will free up bandwidth to make room for what’s on the horizon. Virtual Reality is incredibly data intensive, and soon millions of driverless cars will hit the road as billions of additional Internet connected devices come online. The Internet of Things is an absolute game-changer. Nearly every machine and many objects that aren’t — like our clothes — will be connected to the Internet. [John Volakis] “They’re washable, they can be embedded in electronics. I think eventually what we look forward to is to have circuitry, memory, as well as computer functionality to be embedded within wearable circuits.” You’ll be able to monitor your household appliances from your smartphone, buildings will be able to self monitor to detect wear and tear and factories will anticipate when its machinery — or more accurately, it’s robots — will break down, utility grids will communicate with energy providers and customers in real time, and cities will become smart as traffic lights, trash cans, water and gas lines will all be able to send service and condition updates, saving people valuable time and resources. This explosion of data-producing devices will lead to a revolution in how all that data is stored. The data center industry is one of the world’s most competitive markets. In addition to investing in adequate security measures, companies big and small must make their facilities run as efficiently as possible. The widespread adoption of uninterrupted power supply and cooling systems are driving energy reductions that weren’t possible even five years ago. Thermal management units and an expanded use of free cooling technology is creating energy savings of up to 70%. And by harvesting the power of our natural environments like higher altitude locations, night-time coldness, deep sea or lakewater, and subterranean geothermal energy, data centers are proving that the push to create a better tomorrow doesn’t have to doom future generations. In 2014 data centers in the United States were responsible for 2% of national energy consumption, but thanks to new technology that figure that won’t grow significantly—even as the amount of storage facilities does.
