In this lesson, we'll fix some common grammar mistakes made by English students when using the present perfect tense! 1. When should I use the present perfect simple and when should I use the present perfect continuous? [01:28] 2. When do I use 'since' and 'for'? [07:37] These are both really important questions when you are using the perfect tenses in English! And this video lesson will answer BOTH of them! Later in the lesson, I'll also show you how to use 'for' and 'since' with the present perfect tenses. Both of these words explain how long something has been happening. So, when you want to give more information about the amount of time that an action has been happening for - the duration of the action - you can use FOR or SINCE. Use FOR with a period of time. Use SINCE with a specific point in time. Present Perfect Continuous Tense VS Past Perfect Continuous Tense ( English Grammar Lesson) Present perfect continuous: is used to speak about an action that started in the past and is still on in the present. The action is not completed. Example: I have been working at ABC for 5 years. (I started working 5 years ago, and I am still working currently) Example: I am angry. I have been waiting for you for two hours. (from 2 pm-4 pm I have been waiting) Example: It has been raining since last night. (last night, it started raining at 10 pm and it is still raining this morning) Past perfect continuous: to show that something started in the past and continued until another time in the past. The action is not on in the present. Example: I had been working at ABC for 5 years. (I started working in 2009 and resigned in Dec’14. Now, I am not working at ABC company. So, we use the past perfect continuous) Example: I was angry. I had been waiting for John for two hours. (yesterday, the action of waiting was on for 2 hours) Example: The road was wet. It had been raining for many hours yesterday. (yesterday, the action of raining started and went on for a couple of hours and then stopped. It is not raining in the present)

This lesson is an overview of the present perfect tense What it looks like, how to use it and when to use it! Structure: Subject + have/has + main verb (past participle form) _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ If you don’t feel confident using the present perfect tense in English yet… There are probably a few reasons why! You need to know the past participle form of English verbs... And that can be pretty tricky with irregular verbs! 😳 And you need to understand how to use this tense! Perhaps you feel unsure about when to use the present perfect and when to use the past simple tenses. I will explain all of this inside this lesson. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ When using the present perfect tense, you need an auxiliary verb that helps your main verb to function. In the perfect tenses, the verb (to) have is always the auxiliary verb. In the present perfect tense, the main verb is in the past participle form. This is not difficult for regular past tense verbs. For regular verbs, the past participle form of the verb is the same as the past tense verb, so you just add -ed! But irregular verbs are different and the only way to learn the past participle form is to learn them individually. Past simple or present perfect tense? To answer this question you need to think about time. Finished time and unfinished time. Think about ‘last week’. That’s a good example of finished time. Last week is finished, it’s over. Yesterday, last week, last month, last year, 1991 - these are all examples of finished time… Time that is complete. What about ‘this week’? Is this week finished? No! Not yet. That is an example of unfinished time. There’s still more of this week to come. It’s not finished yet. When you are talking about a time period that has finished, use the past simple. When you are talking about a time period that is unfinished… Like today, this week, this month, this year, use the present perfect. Watch this lesson to learn when to use the present perfect and when to use the past simple tense. The difference between Present Perfect tense (We have gone) and Simple past tense (we went) – English Grammar Lesson Take the quiz : http://www.learnex.in/present-perfect-tense-we-have-gone-vs-simple-past-tense-we-went/ In this lesson, you will learn the difference between the present perfect and simple past tense. Often, people get confused when to use the above sentence structures. The Present Perfect tense: is used to speak about an action is completed in the present time period. This structure is always linked to the present time period and cannot be used to speak about an action that was completed in the past. It is also used to speak about an action that has no specified time. The verb is in the past participle form. Example 01: I have watched three movies this week. (‘this week’ is the present week. Use the present perfect tense with terms like ‘today’ ‘this morning’ ‘this year/month’) Example 02: I have completed my graduation. (time not specified) Example 03: My uncle has gone to New York three times. (We use the present perfect because he exists in the present and so far he has gone to New York thrice) Example 04: I have lived in London for seven years. (I still live in London in the present, till date) Negative Sentences: Use ‘not’ in the negative. Example 01: I have not seen John today Example 02: I have never eaten Chinese food. (till date I haven’t eaten Chinese) Questions: Place ‘have/has’ before the subject: Example 01: Have you ever watched a horror film? Example 02: Have you read ‘the secret’? The Simple past tense: is used to talk about a action that was completed in the past. The verb is in the past form. Example 01: I watched three films last week. (last week is a past time frame and so we use the past form ‘watched’) Example 02: I lived in London for seven years. (we use the past ‘lived’ as I no longer live in London in the present) Example 03: I completed my graduation in 2013. Example 04: My uncle went to NY three times. (here we use ‘went’ because he no longer exists in the current) Negative sentences: Make negatives using ‘did not/didn't’ followed by a verb in the present form. Example 01: I didn't see John yesterday. ( not ‘didn't saw’) Example 02: I did not have pizza last night. Questions: Use did before the subject to make a question. Example 01: Did you read the news paper yesterday? Example 02: Did you call me last evening?

Present perfect continuous tense video lesson. Welcome to English grammar spot. This lesson is about the present perfect continuous. In this tutorial I'm going to show you how to form the present perfect continuous and when to use the present perfect continuous but before we get started is good to know how to conjugate the verb 'to have.' For the singular forms: I have, you have, he has, she has it has and for the plural forms we have, you have, they have Now let's get started let's take a look at these sentences I have been working a lot lately. It has been snowing since Friday. Both the sentences are in the present perfect continuous tense. How to form a present perfect continuous. We use the auxiliary verb to have and the past participle of the to be which is being, the base form of the verb and ING. For example: I have been working all afternoon. You have been listening to the radio for the past hour. He has been sweeping the floor all afternoon. She has been spending a lot of money lately. It has been raining all week. And for the plural forms: We have been playing computer games all night. You have been searching for a supermarket. They have been watching the news all afternoon. Now we need to pay special attention to verbs that end in an 'e'. For example: live, make close and wipe, because these verbs drop their 'e'. Take a look at the examples: I have been living here for quite some time now. He has been making a lot of noise lately. They have been wiping the floor for over an hour. Please note that leaving, making and wiping no longer have an 'e.' Now let's take a look at the present perfect continuous in questions. Again we use the auxiliary verb 'to have' the past participle of the verb to be, the base form of the verb and ING. Has she been talking about him? Have you been playing tennis? Have they been doing their job? For negations we do the same but we add not to the auxiliary verb 'to have.' becoming haven't or hasn't. I haven't been listening to the news. She hasn't been waiting for you for over an hour. The haven't been paying attention. Now let's take a look at when we use a present perfect continuous. We use a present perfect continuous for activities that started in the past but have continued in the present. For example: I have been travelling for a few years. So I started travelling a few years ago and I'm still traveling. They have been working as a chauffeur. So in the past they started to work as a chauffeur and they still are chauffeurs. We also used the present perfect continuous for things that happened in the past but it's not important when they happened, so we do not need to know the time when it took place. She has been visiting her aunt a lot. They have been repairing that car. So both these sentences lack time. We also use the present perfect continues for things that are annoying. For example I've been doing your dirty laundry all afternoon. They have been playing loud music all night long.

Transcript: Hi and welcome back. In this lesson, I will show you how to avoid the most common mistake that people make with the past simple and present perfect tenses, and how to use the two tenses correctly. We will do an exercise to really understand the concept, and there is a quiz to test your understanding. So let’s start. Have a look at these five sentences. Some of the sentences are wrong. Stop the video, try to make the corrections, then play the video again and check. Alright, actually, I tricked you a little bit with that. All of these sentences are wrong. That’s because, they all talk about a single, finished action in the past. You can see this on the timeline. The action can be at any time in the past – it can be 1998 or it can be last week or even yesterday. But if you mention the time for a finished action, then you MUST use the past simple – not the present perfect. Notice that in all of these sentences, there is a strong focus on the time when the action happened. So when do you use the present perfect? You can use it if the action happened recently, and you want to focus on the action and not the time. In our five sentences, the first three are not recent, they happened further back in the past. But if I bought a house just two weeks ago, or last week, I can say “I have bought a house.” That means I have bought the house recently. So if I say to you, “Hey guess what! I have bought a house!” then I am giving you good news. I’m focusing on buying the house. I’m not talking about the time because it’s not important. If you want to know the time, you can ask “When did you buy it?” Then I can say “I bought it two weeks ago” or “I bought it last week.” Notice, again, to mention the time, we use the past simple. Alright, I’m now going to give you a test to see if you can use these two tenses correctly. Just remember: if the past time is important, then use the past simple. If the time is not important, use the present perfect. You see three dialogues on the screen. In each sentence, I want you to choose the correct form of the verb. Stop the video, think about your answers, then play the video again and check. Alright, let’s discuss the answers. Number one is “Hey Sabina, your package has arrived. Here, Ruth is giving news, so there’s no need to mention the time. For this reason, we use the present perfect tense. In number two, “When did it arrive?” We want to use the past simple here because this question asks about the specific time that the action happened. Number three is “It arrived this morning.” because here Ruth says exactly when it happened – this morning, so the past simple is correct. Number four – “Hi Paul. Great news. I have passed my exams.” In number five, “Congrats! When did the results come out?” Number six is “They came out last night”. Number seven is “Have you ever been to Argentina?” Here, we don’t mention a time because the question asks about life experience. The time is not important. So it’s like asking: “In your life, have you ever visited Argentina?” ‘Been’ means ‘visited’ here. Number eight is “No, I haven’t. Have you?” And number nine – “Yes, I went there on vacation in 2010.” Here, we want the past simple because the time is mentioned – 2010. How many answers did you get right? Let me know in the comments section below. I’d like to thank five of our viewers for sending in the request for this lesson: Michael Cygnus, Sourav Sagar, Alberto Linhares, Yogesh Dwivedi, and Manish Chauthani.
