Uncertainty in Hydrological and Water Resource Modelling
This talk begins with an overview of the properties of hydrological and water resource models then charts the history of their use inclimate risk assessment at the catchment-scale. Concepts such as equifinality in (hydrological) modelling and associated implications for climate impact assessment will then be explored. Uncertainties linked to hydrological model structures and parameters are placed in the wider context of other major uncertainties arising from non - climatic pressures, climate model and downscaling biases. Explanations for apparent mismatches between observed and expected hydrological change at regional scales will be offered. Two case studies will then demonstrate how models can be used as ‘virtual laboratories’ for exploring multiple working hypotheses about hydrological change (in the Boyne, Republic of Ireland), and for assessing outcomes of adaptation options (in the Upper Colorado, USA). The talk will conclude with a summary of outstanding research challenges and explain how these relate to the information needs of water planners. Towards Integrated Water Management: Data Strategies
Integrated Watershed Management September 15, 2011 This webinar will present the key requirements and data management issues for integrated-management of water resources and quality, a practical technology that can implement it, and what makes this new approach cost effective and more efficient than conventional strategies. The California Water Quality Monitoring Council has brought together state water quality control boards, municipal MS4 permittees, county health agencies, non-profit conservation organizations and others to improve the coordination and cost-effectiveness of water quality and ecosystem monitoring and assessment, enhance the integration of monitoring data across departments and agencies, and increase public accessibility to monitoring data and assessment information. While progress has been made towards these goals, there remain inherent hurdles in the integration of information and policies that stem from the conventional management approach applied to an integrated resource, water. Case studies to be explored include: 1) San Diego Regional Water Quality Portal-- San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board www.swrcb.ca.gov/rwqcb9/water_issues/programs/swamp/index.shtml 2) The Watershed Monitoring Programs- Los Angeles and San Gabriel Rivers Watershed Council 3) San Diego River Watershed Data Portal RiverWatch Data-- San Diego River Parkway Foundation, SDRWQCB, and San Diego River Conservancy http://www.ecolayers.biz/sdrpf-riverwatch/ Clay Clifton- Mr. Clifton has 15 years experience in environmental health and water qualty gained from working with the County of San Diego, Department of Environmental Health (DEH) and San Diego Coastkeeper. At the Department of Environmental Health, Clay led the Ocean Water Monitoring Program for a decade, and raised the program efficiency and effectiveness by managing data and integrating monitoring strategies with five dischargers, and coordinating reporting, investigation and notification with various stakeholders. Clay currently works with EcoLayers, Incorporated. Joe Purohit- Developing innovative solutions for complex industry problems has been the hallmark of Joe's career. In the eighties, at General Electric he pioneered the use of first-generation microprocessors, sensors and wireless communications for "smart grid" power utility applications. At AT&T he worked on digital voice/video applications and technologies, which evolved into the modern internet. In the early nineties, at Amoco he helped develop markets for fiber optic and next-generation solar power technologies (thin film). From 1994 to 1999, based in Moscow and London, Joe was country manager for BP-Amoco's electric power business in Russia, Eastern Europe and India. In Russia, he won Amoco's participation in the largest ($900 million) private sector power project. It became an exemplar for the restructuring of Russia's national electric power sector. Joe Purohit is the Founder & CEO of EcoLayers, Inc. Since almost half of the worlds population depends on rice as its staple food, rice uses the highest amount of water in agriculture. By 2025, 15 to 20 million hectares of irrigated rice fields may suffer from water scarcity. To face this challenge, scientists at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI; http://irri.org) have developed a technique called alternate wetting and drying or AWD, which uses less water to grow rice. This video provides a glimpse on how to apply AWD in irrigated rice fields.

And for those of us that have access to clean water on a daily basis we probably don’t think all that much about it. But water is essential to human survival. We drink it, we grow our crops with it, we bathe with and it’s used in many industrial processes like manufacturing and power generation. And as our population grows, the demand for water will increase--and lack of usable water will become a real issue for lots of places. Is lack of water an issue for places? For many parts of the world, water is already a big problem. According to the United Nations, over two billion people end up having to drink contaminated water because they don’t have access to the clean water. And because of this more than half a million children die every year. And ensuring access to clean water and sanitation is one of the seventeen sustainable development goals of the United Nations. Why is lack of water becoming a problem? One reason is that some places are using up their water much faster than precipitation can replace it. Additionally bad water management policies can lead to misuse or waste of water. Lack of infrastructure or bad infrastructure can also make access to clean water an issue. For example, in the U.S., leaky pipes cause us to waste about 9,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools of water daily. Climate change can also exacerbate the problems--as the climate changes scientists estimate that both droughts and floods will become more intense. How can we prevent Earth from running out of water? There are lots of things we can do, ranging from individual things to larger scale solutions. For example traditional water conservation techniques can help us reduce our water use so that we are not using too much water too quickly. These tactics include things like replacing grass lawns with low water native plants, taking shorter showers, turning off the water when brushing your teeth, and replacing old appliances with water efficient ones. Depending on where you live, larger scale solutions can include desalination plants, but those can be super expensive and require lots of energy to run. Another potential solution is to get better at recycling waste water so that it can be used to water crops and to drink.
