Articles (a, an, the) - Lesson 1 - 7 Rules For Using Articles Correctly - English Grammar

Transcript: Hello and welcome. In this lesson, I will teach you the seven rules that you need to know for using articles in English correctly. Articles are the words ‘a’, ‘an’, and ‘the’. There is a final quiz at the end of the lesson for you to test your understanding. OK, the first rule is about where to use ‘a’ and where to use ‘an’. So rule number one is use ‘a’ before a consonant sound, and ‘an’ before a vowel sound. So in all of these words – you see that they start with a consonant sound. Cat starts with /k/, dog starts with /d/, boy with /b/, girl with /g/, house with /h/ and tree with /t/. So we say ‘a cat’, ‘a dog’, ‘a boy’, ‘a girl’, ‘a house’, ‘a tree’ etc. Notice that in natural speech, we don’t say ‘a’, we say ‘uh’ – like ‘a cat’. In this next set of words, you see that, they all start with a vowel sound – apple starts with /ae/, engineer starts with /e/, ice-cream with /ai/, old with /o/, umbrella with /uh/. So we say ‘an apple’, ‘an engineer’, ‘an ice-cream cone’, ‘an old womman’, ‘an umbrella’ and so on. In speech, we don’t say ‘an’, we say /ən/. Let’s do a small exercise. You see ten items on the screen. For each one, I want you to say if you would use ‘a’ or ‘an’ before it. Stop the video, think about it, then play the video again and check. OK here are the answers. Did you get them all right? I want to focus on items number seven to ten because these are a little tricky. Number seven is ‘a university’ because even though ‘university’ starts with the letter ‘u’ the first sound of the word is not a vowel sound. We don’t say /ooniversity/. We say /yoo-nə- vər-si-ty/ so that first sound is a /y/ sound, which a consonant sound, so we say ‘a university.’ Number eight is similar. The word ‘European’ starts with a /y/ sound, so ‘a European tour.’ In number nine, the spelling has an ‘h’ at the start but that ‘h’ is silent. We don’t say /hau-ər/, we say /au-ər/. The first sound is an /au/ sound which is a vowel sound, so this is ‘an hour’. In the same way, in number ten, we say MA. ‘M’ starts with an /e/ sound which is again a vowel sound, so ‘an MA in English’. OK let’s move on to rule number two: Use ‘a’ and ‘an’ ONLY with singular, countable nouns. We say that a noun is countable if we can count it – one, two, three, four etc. All of these words on the screen are countable. We can say one elephant, three cars, ten teachers, five hundred onions and so on. Now if you talk about one person or thing, like one elephant or one car, then that’s called a singular noun and if you say ten teachers or five hundred onions, those are called plural nouns. Uncountable nouns cannot be counted in this way. Nouns like water, sugar, milk, love, anger, knowledge are some examples. If you think about it, you cannot say “I drank four waters” or “I want eight milks”. To a person, you can say “I love you” but you can’t say “I have five loves for you” – that doesn’t make any sense. So these are all uncountable. Alright, so the rule is - you can only use ‘a’ and ‘an’ if you’re talking about one person or one thing. Let’s do another quick exercise. Here are ten items again. This time, you see ‘a’ or ‘an’ before the nouns, but some of these are wrong. They should NOT have ‘a’ or ‘an’ before them. Stop the video, identify the mistakes, then play the video again and check. OK, here are the answers. Number three is wrong because ‘shirts’ is a plural and you cannot use ‘a’ or ‘an’ before a plural noun. Number five is wrong because ‘happiness’ is uncountable, so again, ‘a’ or ‘an’ cannot be used there. The same goes for number six – water is uncountable. Number nine is wrong because ‘doctors’ is a plural – you can say ‘a doctor’ but not ‘a doctors’. And finally, in number ten, advice is an uncountable noun – so you cannot ask for ‘an advice’. Now a quick note here: the article ‘the’ can be used with all kinds of nouns – singular or plural countable nouns, and uncountable nouns. OK, so let’s now talk about how to choose between ‘a’ or ‘an’ and ‘the’. Here’s rule number three: Use ‘a’ or ‘an’ to talk about a person or thing unknown to your listener. And use ‘the’ to talk about a person or thing known to your listener. For example, “My sister has two computers: a PC and a laptop. The PC is quite old but the laptop is brand new.” I say ‘a PC’ and ‘a laptop’ because that’s the first time I’m mentioning the two computers. That is, until this point, they are unknown to you, the listener.

Articles - a, an & the - English Grammar lesson

11:07
Articles - a, an & the - English Grammar lesson Take the quiz - http://www.learnex.in/articles-a-an-the/ The 3 articles in English are a, an and the. The learner has to decide noun-by-noun which one of the articles to use. In fact, there are 4 choices to make, because sometimes no article is necessary. Native-speakers, of course, use the articles correctly without thinking. English learners, on the other hand, need to have some guidelines for making the right choice - particularly those learners whose own language does not have articles. The guidelines that follow in this lesson should help ESL students to a basic understanding of English article use. The words a, an and the are known as articles. • We use an before words that begin with vowels (a,e,i,o,u). E.g. I found an orange boat. However there are few exceptions like the words honest and hour. In the words honest and hour the alphabet h is silent and therefore the letter o becomes the first alphabet of the word and hence we use the article an. E.g. Mr. Smith is an honest man. I will be with you in an hour. We use a before words that begin with consonants (all the letters of the alphabet except the vowels). E.g. Bumble is a baby elephant. • We use the before words that we have already spoken about. E.g. I bought an apple. The apple is very sweet.

How To Train For Mass | Arnold Schwarzenegger's Blueprint Training Program

17:13
Learn some of Arnold Schwarzenegger's favorite classic bodybuilding exercises and preferred training techniques for building muscle. Get the knowledge you need to train for mass! ► Arnold Schwarzenegger's Blueprint to Mass: http://bbcom.me/2EqSJTB ► Arnold Schwarzenegger's Blueprint to Cut: http://bbcom.me/2EqDPg8 When it comes to bodybuilding, Arnold Schwarzenegger knows best. His plan for quality mass and extreme strength isn't complicated. In fact, it's steeped in the fundamentals and old-school exercises that should be at the heart of everyone's program. It's a surefire road to growth, but it's fraught with pain and struggle. If you want to learn bodybuilding from the world's best bodybuilder, you're in the right place. | Basics Are Best | "The biggest mistake being made in bodybuilding today is that people aren't covering basic exercises," says the Austrian Oak. And by basic, Arnold doesn't mean easy. Many contemporary fitness centers are full of people on machines, not in squat racks, and big-box gyms often lack even a single platform. Arnold disapproves: "Today, when I go in the gymnasium, I don't see any of the kids learning about the clean and press, or the snatch, or the upright row from the floor." Schwarzenegger's insistence on the essential lifts is not due to some grandfatherly desire to live in the past. It comes from decades of continued interest and expertise in the industry, and from the hard-earned knowledge that it doesn't take fancy machines or off-the-wall programming to become arguably the best bodybuilder in history. Get back to your bodybuilding roots and experience unbelievable growth. | Arnold Schwarzenegger's Training Tips | Chest: "There are three chest exercises that should always be done," Arnold says. "The bench press, the incline bench press at different angles, and the dumbbell flye." Back: "For back, I did chin-ups, bent-over barbell and dumbbell rows, and the T-bar row. Any kind of rowing movement will give you that thickness. Those are the exercises I relied on from the beginning of my career to the end." Arms: Arnold relied on the barbell curl to build thick biceps, but he also used incline dumbbell curls and concentration curls to isolate his biceps. "For triceps," Arnold says, "we did a lot of narrow [close-grip] bench press in the early days. And then triceps push downs and overhead triceps extensions later." Shoulders: Arnold's shoulders were built by barbell presses, behind-the-neck barbell presses, lateral raises, military presses, and dumbbell presses. "We always did presses behind the neck and a special dumbbell press which would stretch out the front delt at the bottom and fully flex it at the top. Now those are called Arnold presses." Legs "The squat is the most important exercise to create big thighs," says Arnold. "I did back squats, front squats, leg extensions, lunges, single-leg deadlifts, good morning exercises, and a lot of leg curls." Abs: "The regular training we did for abs was just leg raises, knee raises, crunches, and sit-ups. We all believed in doing 500 reps of Roman chair sit-ups." ► Arnold Schwarzenegger's Blueprint Training Program: http://bbcom.me/2yHIrMh #Bodybuilding #Arnold #Motivation #BodybuildingMotivation #ArnoldSchwarzenegger ============================================= | Recommended Mass-Building Supplements | ► Protein: http://bbcom.me/2yIG7EC ► Pre-Workouts: http://bbcom.me/2yIppoW ► Testosterone Support: http://bbcom.me/2yHEdUI ► Creatine: http://bbcom.me/2yHkBQE ► Post-Workout: http://bbcom.me/2yHke8I ============================================= | Bodybuilding.com | Sales & Specials ► http://bbcom.me/1pzVaL9 Fitness Articles ► http://bbcom.me/1pzVg5e #1 Online Supplement Store ► http://bbcom.me/1pzViu5 Free Fitness Plans ► http://bbcom.me/1pzVkCb ============================================= | Follow Us | YouTube ► http://bit.ly/1RSJFa4 Facebook ► http://on.fb.me/1lomhpr Instagram ► http://bit.ly/1LzBxab Twitter ► http://bit.ly/1RSJQlL Google+ ► http://bit.ly/1NRe8qu Pinterest ► http://bit.ly/1OOZgY4 Spotify ► http://spoti.fi/1NRebm0 We are Bodybuilding.com. 6 Exercises to Kill Chronic Knee, Foot or Hip Pain

11:15
If you, just like 15 to 25 percent of people in the US, suffer from chronic knee pain, or just get tired sore feet from constantly being on the go, pay attention to these 6 exercises to cure chronic knee, foot or hip pain. You don’t need an expensive treatment if you regularly perform the simple workout at home. Knees are the second largest source of recurrent pain, and once you add in the feet and hips, it turns out that the legs can cause big problems for a lot of people. Simple tip-toeing, besides strengthening your calves, helps improve your balance by reducing the area in contact with the ground, which makes keeping your balance quite a challenge. It strengthens your glutes and core muscles, improves your posture while simultaneously relieving back pain, increases the flexibility of your ankles, stretches the muscles around your shins, which are an otherwise difficult muscle group to target. Heel raises, ankle circles, resistance training and toe games are all effective exercises for relieving pain in different parts of your legs. Try to do rolling foot massage on a daily basis and do as many reps as you want or have time for. It gives the bottom of your foot a nice stretch and prevents foot-related injuries in the long run. Music: Diamond Ortiz - Inevitable https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music TIMESTAMPS Exercise #1. Heel raises 1:01 Exercise #2. Tip-toeing 3:22 Exercise #3. Ankle circles 4:34 Exercise #4. Resistance training 5:47 Exercise #5. Toe games 7:42 Exercise #6. Rolling foot massage 9:24 Bonus 10:04 SUMMARY -You’ll need to grab a chair for this exercise. Stand behind it and use the back of the chair to support yourself. This exercise helps strengthen your ankles and works the muscles around the knee. -Simply tip-toe around your house kind of quickly. This will strengthen your calves and give a little workout to your toes and the balls of your feet. Aim to do this exercise regularly for 5 to 15 minutes or until you get tired. -This exercise helps loosen up the tendons and muscles in your legs and ankles. It’ll improve your flexibility, range of motion, and overall comfort while walking or standing. -Resistance training targets the muscles in your calves and inner and outer thighs, not only toning but also strengthening them. -Toe games is an important exercise because it strengthens the tiny muscles in your toes and feet. They tend to be underdeveloped, which can be a big problem since they support your arches, keep your toes properly aligned, and even contribute to balance. -Rolling foot massage works the muscles in the heels and balls of your feet. It’s also a nice relaxing massage for your arches. -If your feet are killing you after a long day, use one thumb to put pressure on the spot between your big toe and pointer toe and use the other thumb to press the point between your ring toe and pinky toe. Gently massage these spots for up to 15 minutes for easy and quick relaxation. 10 Great Exercises to Improve Your Eyesight

11:19
How to improve your eyesight at home? Exercising your eyes is one of those simple things that very few people do. However, it can help you maintain excellent vision. Here are 10 exercises that will take you no more than ten minutes to do. You can give them a try right now while watching this video – we are going to do all of them with you! Exercise #1. Blink for a minute.  Exercise #2. Rotate your head while staring ahead.  Exercise #3. Look to your right and left.  Exercise #4. Close your eyes and relax.  Exercise #5. Move your gaze in different directions.  Exercise #6. Close and open your eyes. Exercise #7. Push against your temples with your fingers.  Exercise #8. Draw geometric figures with your gaze.  Exercise #9. Move your eyeballs up and down.  Exercise #10. Strengthen your eyes’ near and far focusing. SUMMARY - Blinking is an excellent way to relax your eyes. It has three functions: it helps to grease your eyes, clean them, and give them a break from light. - The most important sense organs are your eyes. Also, it’s one of the most complex sensory organs in your body. Poor vision limits you in many ways; therefore, find 10 minutes every day to perform these exercises. - Darkness is believed to help strengthen the photoreceptor cells in your eyes, which in turn can contribute to a clear vision. - These exercises improve all aspects of your visual perception. It is suitable for both nearsightedness and farsightedness. - This workout helps to relax your eye muscles and increases blood circulation in your eyes. Keep performing these ten exercises regularly, and you will see great results within a week! To achieve the best result, you need to monitor your health as well. According to experts, good eyesight depends on your diet. Remember that the most useful food is natural food with minimal heat treatment as it keeps the greatest amount of vitamins. So, have you tried the exercises? How did they work for you? Share your thought in the comments below! KNOW if YOUR *TMJ* Tinnitus Can be Improved -- Somatic-type

11:59
For more information and self-help tools, see http://tinnitussynergy.com/tpt/ Somatic tinnitus, tinnitus related to muscle and joint problems SUGGESTS to SOME that correcting the muscle and joint problem will fix the tinnitus. That is very INTRIGUING, but is it TRUE? We can use this evaluation to PREDICT if TMJ treatment will reduce YOUR tinnitus: IF you have Tinnitus AND TMJ dysfunction (popping, pain, or strain of the TMJ) AND: ANY of these tests reproduce or intensify your tinnitus, you WILL improve. If NONE of these tests reproduce or intensify your tinnitus, 33% of you will STILL improve ! 🏋So what can we USE, NOW, from this study? You can do your own TMJ self-care. Dr. Wright quotes others in saying that “Self-management has been reported to help 60 to 90 percent of the patients with TM[J disorder].” I’ll give you a link to the self-care instructions in the description, and I will be CLEARLY explaining how to do the BEST therapy for TMJ disorder in one of my next few video episodes.(6) 🚀Future Applications: What if there was an app with simple, clear videos that would walk you through this evaluation AND the self-Management solutions on your own, or that you could share with a professional that was helping you? Diet Plan for 6 Pack Abs (STEP BY STEP!)

13:11
Get 6 pack abs year round by following this diet plan http://athleanx.com/x/diet-plan-for-a-six-pack You’ve probably heard that 6 pack abs are obtained through a proper diet, that abs are made in the kitchen. You’d be right. That said, getting abs still remains rather elusive to many and certainly being able to maintain them year round is even harder. Not any more. In this video, I show you a 5 step plan for how to get a 6 pack that you can use to start getting your abs to show fast. Despite the fact that many are aware of the importance of proper nutrition when it comes to getting abs, it is still a mighty struggle to get them. It usually comes down to the methods those people are using to try and get them in the first place. Crash diet plans and temporary deprivation based tactics are not going to cut it long term if you want to get and keep your abs. Anything that forces you to feel as if you’re missing out or be deprived of what you really want is only going to be a temporary solution at best. As soon as you get tired of not having what you want, you’ll quickly give in and lose your ability to keep your hard earned abs. That said, the 5 step formula for getting a 6 pack starts with cutting out the obvious crap foods from your diet. You should know pretty quickly what these are. It’s the cakes, sweets, alcohol, fatty salad dressings, etc that just scream problems the minute you eat them. You know what they are and that means you know they should be gone, so do it. There’s never been a better time than now to start making the changes that are going to dramatically help you in your pursuit of your abs. Next step is to start eating more often. Yep, despite what keyboard scientists who read a few articles on google scholar want you to believe, there are far more important reasons to be eating more frequently throughout the day than whether or not this is maximally anabolic. I cover these for you in the video. Next up, you’re going to want to take another pass through that diet of yours. On this second time through, you’re going to want to remove the less obvious items that aren’t helping you as best they can to get your 6 pack abs. For me, I lay out three perfect examples. I thought these foods were healthy but I was only partially right. How they were being prepared was making all the difference in me seeing my abs consistently…or not. Moving on, you now want to eat more of the good foods you swapped in. This helps you to maintain and continue to build new muscle. Too often, people who take out the offending foods will free up many calories in their diet. If you don’t replace them with good foods you’ll likely wind up not supporting your muscle growth and be skinny without enough muscle mass. Finally, where the etching in of those abs can happen, supplementation. Use high quality supplements to fine tune your efforts and really take your results to the next level. If you’re looking for the latest in sports nutrition to assist your ab getting goals, be sure to head to http://athleanrx.com or head to http://athleanx.com if you want a meal my meal diet plan for getting abs. English Grammar lesson - Using Conjunctions correctly in sentences ( free English Lessons)

11:24
English Grammar lesson - Using conjunctions correctly in sentences (free English Lessons) Blog : http://www.learnex.in/using-conjunctions-correctly-in-a-sentence In this English Grammar lesson you will learn how to use conjunctions correctly in a sentence. A conjunction is a word used to connect clauses or sentences or to coordinate words in the same clause. Website : http://www.letstalkpodcast.com Facebook : http://www.facebook.com/letstalkpodcast Youtube : http://www.youtube.com/learnexmumbai 1. And: adds one thing to another or used for similar ideas. Example: Jane came to my party. Samara came to my party. Jane and Samara came to my party. 2. But: is used to show contrast. So, if we talk about two things, people or ideas that are contrasting each other, we use ‘but’. Example: Mrs. Smith is strict. Mrs. Smith is kind. Mrs. Smith is strict but kind. (strict and kind are contrasting qualities) 3. So: indicates effect, result or consequence. It also expresses ‘purpose’ in a sentence. For example: Write down the address, so we don’t forget it. 4. Or: presents an alternative or a choice. Example: Do you want pasta or rice? 5. Because/since/as: are used to give reasons. They can be used interchangeably. Example: I sat down because/since/as I was tired. 6. After/before/when: are all time related conjunctions. Example: I’ll email you after I receive the update. (after shows the sequence where one action id followed by the other) Example: I’ll email you before I receive the update. (before shows one action happens prior to the other or precedes the other) Example: I’ll email you when I receive the update.
The Articles and the Constitution (US History EOC Review - USHC 1.4)

15:12
http://www.tomrichey.net/eoc This lecture on the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution was designed specifically to help students who are reviewing for the South Carolina US History EOC (End of Course) exam but it has something to offer lifelong learners and other interested parties, as well. The Articles of Confederation were drawn up during the American Revolution creating a glorified military alliance with a weak central government in order to minimize the chances of tyranny. After the Revolution, a bad economy and Shays' Rebellion caused many elites to reconsider and advocate for a stronger central government. In 1787, the Constitutional Convention met in Philadelphia to create the United States Constitution, which created a stronger central government with additional power, such as the power to regulate interstate commerce. The Constitution was ratified after a contentious process which ended with the addition of a Bill of Rights to appease the Antifederalists. In the state of New York, Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay wrote The Federalist Papers in order to answer objections to the proposed Constitution. This lecture is part of my EOC Review series and specifically addresses content found in USHC 1.4.

Ultimate Full-Body Dumbbell Workout | Andy Speer

07:18
Got a pair of dumbbells? Then you can do this circuit! Build muscle, gain strength, and get ripped with Andy Speer's ultimate dumbbell circuit workout. Just don't let go until the end! ► Shop Bodybuilding Signature Supplements: https://bbcom.me/2pGXyCd ► Premium Fitness Plans: https://bbcom.me/2pJeKH6 ► Get the Full Workout: https://bbcom.me/2pGwByw You don't need a gym filled with equipment to build serious muscle, strength, and conditioning. All you need is two dumbbells and a plan! I put together four complexes, each using nothing more than a pair of dumbbells and your body. Each complex will challenge you in a unique way. Complexes are great because they force you to complete a high-volume workout in a short amount of time. The key is to hang on to the weight until you've completed all the movements. No rest until you've finished a round! Once you've completed the warm-up, grab a set of dumbbells, and get your mind and some weights ready. The first time you do the routine, just work through each complex as best as you can, and don't worry if it feels a bit awkward or the weights you have aren't ideal. If you have more than one pair of dumbbells available, you'll probably want increase or decrease the weight depending on the complex. In general, use as much weight as you can, but don't go so heavy you can't move well. Rest 2-3 minutes between complexes, and be ready to work. | The Ultimate Full-Body Workout | Warm-Up: Perform 1 Round 1. Dumbbell Halo: 10 reps in both directions 2. Standing Dumbbell Reverse Fly: 10 reps 3. Standing Dumbbell Scap Raise: 10 reps 4. Dumbbell Romanian Deadlift: 10 reps 5. Single-Leg Deadlift Walk: 10 reps per leg 6.
