Counting the Cost - The giants of commodity trading

25:22
Subscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe From Switzerland to the world - they are the giants of commodity trading, but can they shake off the tag of 'modern day slave masters'? This week on Counting the Cost we examine the commodities industry - the very essentials, the raw materials and resources that we simply cannot live without. These are traded all over the globe - everything from oil to copper, sugar to precious minerals. A country normally associated with great lakes, political neutrality and the Red Cross can now be associated with the global commodities industry as Switzerland is home to some of the biggest commodities companies in the world. But why has that one region out surpassed the others in the commodities business? And is it possible to regulate the globalised, multi-billion dollar companies which operate within it? At Al Jazeera English, we focus on people and events that affect people's lives. We bring topics to light that often go under-reported, listening to all sides of the story and giving a 'voice to the voiceless.' China has 'totally stopped' importing U.S. crude oil amid trade war

00:29
중국, 무역전쟁 악화로 미국산 원유 수입 전면 중단 China has apparently stopped importing American crude oil amid the two countries' trade war. The President of China Merchants Energy Shipping Company, Xie Chunlin, told Reuters on Wednesday... that shipments of U.S. crude had "totally stopped." He added the firm had "a nice business" before the trade war, but now it's suffering. Crude oil is not covered by Beijing's tariffs, but companies reportedly fear that's only temporary and are cutting back their orders. World Top 10 Largest Oil and Gas Companies

02:24
World Top 10 Largest Oil and Gas Companies 10. Kuwait Petrol Corporation -- 3.2 million barrels per day -In 1934 the Kuwait Oil Company was created by the companies we know today as BP and Chevron. Over the next 40 years, exploration and development expanded the production potential of the Kuwaiti oilfields. In 1975, the Kuwait government took over the Kuwait Oil Company and by 1980 had nationalized the oil industry under the new Kuwait Petroleum Organization (KPO). 9. Chevron -- 3.5 million barrels per day -The discovery of oil in California in 1879 led to the creation of the Pacific Coast Oil Company (PCOC). Over the following decades, the PCOC joined other companies and experienced reorganization and several name changes. In 1984, now known as Standard Oil of California, the company merged with Gulf Oil in what was the biggest merger of that time. The following reorganization saw the company renamed Chevron Corporation. 8. Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex) -- 3.6 million barrels per day -In the early 20th century, American and British oil companies were developing and refining petroleum in Mexico. The Mexican government saw the potential in such industry and moved quickly to support striking oil workers in 1938. Citing the Mexican Constitution, the government took over all foreign facilities and nationalized the oil industry. 7. Royal Dutch Shell -- 3.9 million barrels per day -One of the largest gas companies in the world, Royal Dutch Shell was created in 1907 by the merging of Royal Dutch Petroleum and the Shell Transport and Trading Company of Britain. Perhaps best known in North America for its gas stations, automotive oils and association with Formula One racing, Shell's oil and gas interests stretch across the globe. 6. BP -- 4.1 million barrels per day -British Petroleum's origins date back to 1909 with the start-up of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company. Over the years the company changed names and expanded its drilling operations from the Middle East to Alaska and the North Sea. At one time, the company was the second largest oil company in the world. After the 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill, however, the company sold off a number of assets to help pay for the $4.5 billion in penalties, fines and legal fees. 5. PetroChina -- 4.4 million barrels per day -This Chinese state-controlled company is likely to move up this list quickly in the coming years. PetroChina is the largest Chinese oil and gas company. Founded in 1999, this company's annual revenue is reportedly $325 billion, although this figure will likely be much higher once recent market data is released. In worldwide development, PetroChina is involved in Africa, in Australia, where it signed a $50 billion contract for Australia natural gas, 4. ExxonMobil -- 5.3 million barrels per day -This company has its origins in John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil Company. When Rockefeller was forced to break up his company because of antitrust laws in 1911, two of the companies created were Jersey Standard and Socony. Over the years these two companies transformed into Exxon and Mobil, respectively. 3. National Iranian Oil Company -- 6.4 million barrels per day -The National Iranian Oil Company holds third place among the world's largest oil and gas producers. This company has its origins in the early 20th century when the British discovered and successfully began exploiting Iran's oil with the Anglo-Persian Oil Company. 2. Gazprom -- 9.7 million barrels per day -Officially known as Open Joint Stock Company Gazprom, Gazprom is the world's largest natural gas company. Created in 1989, a majority of the company is held by the Russian state while a small portion is privately owned. The company was able to grow significantly in the 1990s thanks to the fact that Gazprom's chairman was appointed Prime Minister of Russia. Don't be fooled by the 'mere' $150 billion annual revenue and $40 billion annual profits of this company. 1. Saudi Aramco -- 12 million+ barrels per day -Saudi Aramco is deservedly #1 on this list. This company generates over $1 billion a day in revenue, produces the most barrels per day of any company and is sitting on the largest proven reserves in the world. This company began with Standard Oil of California striking oil in Saudi Arabia in the 1930s. By 1944 the Arabian-American Oil Company (Aramco) was formed. American support for Israel in the 1970s led the Saudi Arabian government to push for a greater stake in the domestic oil industry. source-http://www.therichest.com/business/companies-business/the-10-largest-oil-and-gas-companies-in-the-world/ I, Sk Atar Ali hereby declare that all Images use to make this video is from Google Search www.google.com. World's largest oil trader ignores ban on trading Iranian oil

00:45
The world's largest oil trader bought two million barrels of fuel oil from Iran and sold it to Chinese traders last month, Reuters reported after interviews with 10 oil trading industry and shipping sources in Southeast Asia, China and the Middle East. Vitol had claimed it stopped all trade in Iranian oil earlier in the year. Vitol acquired the Iranian fuel oil from an Iranian oil tanker that had switched off its tanker tracking system while on its way to Malaysia. The fuel oil was first transferred from the Iranian tanker into a Vitol tanker and then into a Maersk tanker. The fuel oil was blended in Singapore with fuel oil from Europe to mask its Iranian characteristics.

China may seek Naval base in Gwader to Protect Oil and Trade Route

03:20
China may seek a naval base and command and control center in Gwader newly constructed Port for China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) The Silk road to protect from pirates and other enemies. The official mentioned that the security of the Chinese nationals working on the CPEC projects, as well as the Chinese shipments going into the Arabian Sea, would solely be a responsibility of Pakistani law enforcing agencies, and, for the same purpose, a designated division—Strategic Security Division (SSD) —had been raised. “Pakistan Navy is well equipped to handle the security of Chinese shipments, and we will manage the security of the shipments effectively,” the source said, adding that this was the reason that the capacity-building process of Pakistan Navy was being given a priority. “We are planning for the future challenges and will ensure that Pakistan Navy is equipped with modern gadgets to face the future challenges,” the official added. Asked whether Pakistan would collaborate with the Chinese Navy to ensure the security of the Chinese shipments, the official responded in the affirmative. “Yes, Pakistani and Chinese navy would hold joint exercises from time to time to help meet the challenges. Moreover, the frigates and warships of the Chinese Navy would keep visiting Pakistan’s coastal areas. Moreover, joint security drills may also be considered,” the source added. Asked whether these drills would be held at Gwadar port, the official said that Pakistan wanted to dedicate the strategic port only for commercial trade. “We would like to dedicate Gwadar port for commercial purposes. However, for effective security, we have developed a small naval base at the port, while some personnel from military, FC and Rangers have also been stationed for security purposes,” the source said. The source said that Pakistan Navy would be using Jinnah Naval Base for all sorts of naval cooperation, and whether it is strategic or conventional weaponry, all exercises and skill building cooperation would be conducted at Ormara base.

Trade war escalates as China stopped all oil imports from the US

02:24
America’s second-largest oil client, China, has completely stopped buying crude from the United States as trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies continue to grow. While oil has not been included on the list of bilateral tariffs, Chinese refiners have been staying away from buying crude from the US. “We are one of the major carriers for #crude oil from the US to China. Before [the trade war] we had a nice business, but now it’s totally stopped,” Xie Chunlin, the president of CMES, said on the sidelines of the Global Maritime Forum’s Annual Summit in Hong Kong, as quoted by Reuters. “It’s unfortunately happened, the #trade #war between the #US and #China. Surely for the shipping business, it’s not good,” the CMES president said. He added that the trade war was also forcing China to diversify its soybean supplies. Beijing is now buying most of its soybeans from South America. China’s crude oil imports from America reached an average of 334,880 barrels per day through August, making Beijing the second-largest buyer of US oil after Canada. In fact, China may be the largest buyer of American crude since much of the oil imported by Canada is re-exports – Canadian crude that briefly crosses into the US on pipelines before re-entering Canada. After ending a 40-year ban on oil exports in late 2015, the US has ramped up sales to two million barrels per day (bpd). China buys most of its crude from Russia, with imports soaring from 665,000 bpd in 2014 to 1.2 million bpd last year. Beijing’s other major suppliers are Saudi Arabia and Iran.

SOUNDBITE (English) David Gerald, Securities Investors Association Singapore president: "With this episode it is now correct to say that investors will start looking at China companies very carefully. It is accepted, it is well known that corporate governance and transparency levels are not that high in China and they don't meet our standards so on a case by case basis, investors will be choosy." 9. Various of newspaper headlines 10. SOUNDBITE (English) David Gerald, Securities Investors Association Singapore president: "While there may be, there is a possibility that some investors will move away from Chinese stock, but that may be a temporary setback for China stocks, as in all other cases they will get back when it is history, and when there is money to be made they will be back." 11. China Aviation Oil reception STORYLINE: Financial experts combed records on Thursday at China Aviation Oil, the Singapore-listed jet fuel supplier that this week sought court protection from creditors after admitting crushing losses from speculative trading. Singapore's stock exchange had asked PricewaterhouseCoopers to investigate the company's drastic losses of 550 (m) million US dollars, news of which has shaken the financial community in the city-state. China Aviation Oil (Singapore) Corporation Spokesman Gerald Woon said: "A special taskforce is in place to oversee the day to day operations of China Aviation Oil and to assist in the investigations as well as the restructuring and rehabilitation of the company." China Aviation Oil supplies most of the jet fuel used in China. It is listed and headquartered in Singapore - a major oil-trading centre - but majority-owned by China's state-linked China Aviation Oil Holding Company. The Singapore-based firm stunned investors and markets regulators on Tuesday, when it admitted racking up huge losses after speculative bets on energy markets turned sour. It has received a 100 (m) million US dollars lifeline cash injection from its parent group - which is also probing the losses - and is talking to creditors and some shareholders about a possible rescue plan. The affair has stoked anger and confusion in Singapore, a city-state that prides itself on tough corporate disclosure standards. The government aggressively promotes the country as a financial hub. In an editorial on Thursday, Singapore's Business Times newspaper described the matter as a "catastrophic failure" and asked whether there should be a wholesale review of Singapore's financial regulations. China Aviation Oil said in a statement on Tuesday that its directors knew in October that it was facing severe difficulty, but they felt it better to conceal the mounting losses until a potential rescue plan was mapped out. The company's chief executive, Chen Juilin - who was suspended on Tuesday - has left Singapore for China, The Straits Times newspaper reported on Thursday. The debacle has evoked memories in Singapore of the 1995 collapse of Britain's Barings Bank, which was brought down after Singapore-based trader Nick Leeson ran up (b) billions of dollars in losses when his market gambles went awry. The Battle Raging In Nigeria Over Control Of Oil | VICE on HBO

14:38
Nigeria may sit atop one of the largest oil reserves in the world, but the majority of the Nigerian people have seen little benefit from the multibillion-dollar industry. The government and global energy companies have been exploiting the resource for years, bringing poverty, pollution, and violence to the Niger Delta. And now the local militias fighting for oil control have made conditions even worse. Caught in the conflict are Nigerian citizens involved in the illegal oil market simply for survival. Oil theft is rampant, and the booming black market has transnational oil and gas consultants concerned about the effects on global oil markets. The government isn't too happy about it either. “All the oil that is sold around here, the government calls illegally refined products,” local oil businessman Don Wizaro told VICE News. And when the Nigerian military raids illegal oil operations, they slash containers, releasing oil into waterways, contaminating what the main source of fishing, agriculture, and drinking water. As the government continues its assault on illegal refineries and barges carrying stolen oil, local militias are retaliating. And one of the most notorious militias is the Niger Delta Avengers. They attack pipelines and infrastructure, significantly affecting both the environment and the economy. VICE correspondent Gianna Toboni heads to the heart of Nigeria's oil production to witness firsthand the fight over the control of oil in the Niger Delta. Midday Report: U.S. Stocks Drop on Weak China Trade, Crude Oil Decline

01:14
Stocks bottomed out at session lows as weak trade data reignited worries over growth in China's economy. Exports in September fell at a pace three times what analysts had forecast. Crude oil prices slumped after a weekly read on U.S. inventories showed the first increase in six weeks. Analysts expected an increase a fraction of the size. Mounting domestic supply has been just one of the concerns keeping commodity traders at bay. Railroad operator CSX was active after weathering a quarter in which a sharp slump in coal shipment volumes weighed on revenue. The freight company anticipates a 25% Subscribe to TheStreetTV on YouTube: http://t.st/TheStreetTV For more content from TheStreet visit: http://thestreet.com Check out all our videos: http://youtube.com/user/TheStreetTV Follow TheStreet on Twitter: http://twitter.com/thestreet Like TheStreet on Facebook: http://facebook.com/TheStreet Follow TheStreet on LinkedIn: http://linkedin.com/company/theStreet Follow TheStreet on Google+: http://plus.google.com/+TheStreet

The Netherlands is one of Europe's economic centers, despite its small size. This surprising twist of history is due, however, to a less savory turn of events. During the 16th century the Dutch were under the dominion of the Spanish Empire and they didn't like that very much. They fought for their independence for 80 years and their country suffered greatly because of it. Back then the Spanish controlled the lucrative Asian spice trade, which the Dutch economy relied on. However, when the Spanish closed off Lisbon (then the spice hub of the world) the Dutch had no choice but to sail to the Far East and claim the spice trade for themselves. While the Spanish were bogged down in a costly war against the English, the Netherlands swooped in and took over the Asian spice trade through their Dutch East India Company (VOC). In the span of a few decades this new business venture grew to massive proportions and funded the Dutch independence effort, as well as massive land reclamation. Eventually the VOC declined and a perfect storm of wars abroad and at home eventually destroyed it. But after two centuries of operation this one company left an impressive legacy of colonial scars and capitalist wealth that still influences the Netherlands to this day. Under the kind patronage of Nagabhushanam Peddi, James Gallagher & Brett Gmoser.

Hoeven: Canadian PM in China to Sell Oil; US Congress Needs to Act Because Administration Won't

14:38
On Feb. 7, 2012, Senator John Hoeven (R-ND) said Congress must act on the Keystone XL pipeline or risk losing Canadian oil to China. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and a delegation of Canadian energy leaders are meeting this week with Chinese leaders to bolster the energy and trade relationship between the two nations. This trip comes on the heels of the Obama Administration's rejection of the Keystone XL pipeline, a project which the Administration reviewed for more than three years. In light of these events, Hoeven called on Congress to approve the Keystone XL pipeline, which would transport 830,000 barrels of Canadian and Bakken crude to U.S. refineries, before the U.S misses an opportunity to access energy from its Canadian ally: "I hope the American people fully understand exactly what's going on here, because it's time to act. Right now, Prime Minister Harper is talking to President Hu Jintao, the President of China, and believe me, China wants the oil. President Harper and Canada, our closest ally in the world, has waited three years—three years—to get a 'no' answer from the Administration. We'll see what kind of agreement he comes back with from China. But the reality is, it's time to act."

Trump talks about trade issues with China, India

05:08
(1 Oct 2018) US President Donald Trump is touting a trade agreement reached with Mexico and Canada just weeks before the November congressional elections. The agreement offers some vindication for his hardline trade policies that have roiled relations with China, the European Union and America's North American neighbors while causing concerns among Midwest farmers and manufacturers worried about retaliation. President Trump spoke about continued issues with China and tariffs but said the two countries are trying to work things out. "We'll see what happens with China," said Trump. "They have a surplus of $375-billion dollars, with a B, with the United States and it's been that we for years. I always say 'we rebuilt China'." The president also said that India charges very high tariffs on US goods but says that after speaking with Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi, those tariffs will be greatly reduced. Today News - U.S., China Trade War Puts A Lid On Oil

01:51
Today News - U.S., China Trade War Puts A Lid On Oil The oil market has suddenly gone south in recent weeks, with cracks in the global economy starting to drag down oil. The U.S.-China trade war is one of the drivers of the souring climate. But that conflict could get a lot worse in the months ahead. The latest flashpoint is the lira crisis in Turkey, which is dragging down other currencies and sparking fears of an emerging market crisis. But the problems have been building for some time. The IEA warned last week that the oil market has been “cool... Today News - Boeing braces for trade war headwinds as order cancellation by China looms At Chinas biggest air show, a top Boeing executive voiced hope that the US and China would resume trade talks. He has reason to worry: The US aerospace giant could fly into turbulence in a protracted commercial conflict. While Boeing has so far escaped the rounds of tit-for-tat tariffs, analysts say it is at risk of being the next victim if the trade war escalates, which would benefit its European rival Airbus. Tariffs would bite deep for the Chicago-based company as China -- the worlds second-b... China's trillion dollar plan to dominate global trade

05:59
It's about more than just economics. To learn more, visit https://reconnectingasia.csis.org/map/ Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO China's Belt and Road Initiative is the most ambitious infrastructure project in modern history. It spans over 60 countries and will cost over a trillion dollars. The plan is to make it easier for the world to trade with China, by funding roads, railways, pipelines, and other infrastructure projects in Asia and Africa. China is loaning trillions of dollars to any country that's willing to participate and it's been a big hit with the less democratic countries in the region. This makes the BRI a risky plan as well. But China is pushing forward because its goals are not strictly economic, they're also geopolitical. To truly understand the international conflicts and trends shaping our world you need a big-picture view. Video journalist Sam Ellis uses maps to tell these stories and chart their effects on foreign policy. High Tension - Recent developments surrounding the South China Sea

10:31
A look at recent developments in the South China Sea, where China is pitted against smaller neighbors in multiple disputes over islands, coral reefs and lagoons in waters crucial for global commerce and rich in fish and potential oil and gas reserves: This is a weekly look at the latest developments in the South China Sea, the location of several territorial conflicts that have raised tensions in the region. CHINA DEMANDS END TO US OPERATIONS China has demanded the United States stop sending ships and military aircraft close to its South China Sea island claims during talks to prepare for a meeting between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping. The U.S. pushed back Friday, insisting it will continue to “fly, sail and operate wherever international law allows.” In late September, U.S. and Chinese vessels nearly collided close to a disputed reef.
