Presentation preview for: Peake, Jiménez & Rodríguez (May, 2015). Abstract: Dyscalculia is a heterogeneous learning disorder that affects 3-6% of children in elementary education. Those children have severe difficulties in arithmetic, specifically, they use immature strategies to solve procedural arithmetic, and have difficulties retrieving arithmetical facts from long term memory. Triple Code Model (Dehaene & Cohen, 1995; Dehaene, Piazza, Pinel & Cohen, 2003) postulated two possible causes, and therefore, two subtypes of dyscalculia: a representational subtype and a verbal subtype. This was the first study conducted to demonstrate this classification. Through data-driven techniques, we found a representational subtype and a verbal subtype, among 10-12 years old children with dyscalculia. Children in the representational subtype showed a deficit in estimation in the number line, visuospatial processes and comparing digits. Those children in the verbal subtype have deficits in retrieving arithmetical facts and in phonological processes. They also showed difficulties in comparing digits. The analysis also clustered a third group whose profile could not be explained by the Triple Code Model postulates.

2014 Fall Meeting Section: Seismology Session: Aftershock Hazard: Forecasting Highly Time- and Space-Dependent Seismicity and Shaking after Large Mainshocks I Title: What Controls the Duration of Aftershocks, and Why It Matters for Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Assessment Authors: Toda, S, Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan Stein, R S, USGS, Menlo Park, CA, United States Abstract: A fundamental problem confronting hazard modelers in slowly deforming regions such as the central and eastern United States, Australia, and inner Honshu, is whether the current seismicity represents the steady state earthquake potential, or is instead a decaying potential associated with past mainshocks. If the current seismicity were composed of long-lived aftershock sequences, it might then be anti-correlated with the next large earthquakes. While aftershock productivity is known to be a property of the mainshock magnitude, aftershock duration (the time until the aftershock rate decays to the pre-mainshock rate) should, according to rate/state friction theory of Dieterich[1994], be inversely proportional to the fault stressing rate. If so, slowly deforming regions would be expected to sustain long aftershock sequences. Most tests have supported the Dieterich hypothesis, but use ambiguous proxies for the fault stressing rate, such as the mainshock recurrence interval. Here we test the hypothesis by examining off-fault aftershocks of the 2011 M=9 Tohoku-oki rupture up to 250 km from the source, as well as near-fault aftershocks of six large Japanese mainshocks, sampling a range of receiver faults, from thrusts slipping 80 mm/yr, to normal faults slipping 0.1 mm/yr. We find that aftershock sequences lasted a month on the fastest-slipping faults, have durations of 10-100 years on faults slipping 1-10 mm/yr, and are projected to persist for at least 200 years on the slowest faults. Although the Omori decay exponent for short and long sequences is similar, the very different background rates account for the duration differences. If the stressing rate is generally proportional to fault slip rate, then aftershock durations indeed support the Dieterich hypothesis. The test means that the hazard associated with aftershocks depends on local tectonic conditions rather than on the mainshock magnitude alone. Because declustering approaches do not remove such long-lived aftershocks, these shocks can be misinterpreted as independent events. Aftershock sequences may thus masquerade as background seismicity and misguide hazard assessments in slowly deforming regions. Depending on how the hazard is calculated, this can lead to over- or underestimates of hazard in aftershock zones. Compensating Indirect Scattering for Immersive and Semi-Immersive Projection Displays Concavely shaped projection screens, such as CAVEs, two-sided workbenches, domes, or cylinders scatter a fraction of light to other screen portions. The amount of indirect illumination adds to the directly projected image and causes the displayed content to appear partially inconsistent and washed out. We have developed a reverse radiosity method that compensates first-level and higher-level secondary scattering effects in real-time. The images appear more brilliant and uniform when reducing the scattering contribution. A numerical solution is approximated with Jacobi iteration for a sparse-matrix linear equation system on the GPU. Efficient data structures allow packing the required data into textures which are processed by pixel shaders. Frame-buffer objects are used for a fast exchange of intermediate iteration results, and enable computations with floating point precision. Our algorithm's result can be optimized for quality or performance.

The information criterion on the posterior distribution reflects some notion of learning from the observations. The computation of the expected criterion value can be a challenging task. Usually this involves the evaluation of integrals or sums. If the integrals are analytically intractable and numerical integration routines do not work, Monte Carlo simulation strategies can be applied in a framework of stochastic optimization. Some of our proposed methods will be based on simulation-based optimal design algorithms which utilize Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods, but we intend to go beyond that class. Simulation-based methods make it possible to efficiently solve a wider range of problems for which standard methods cannot provide tractable solutions. In this presentation we outline potentials and limitations of ABC for design purposes. Furthermore we will report details on an application for dealing with spatial extremes.
