Water on Mars Many books, TV shows, and movies have fantasized about colonizing the planet Mars. The only problem is that Mars is not a place that can sustain life in its current state, and just as bad, it does not have any water...or so we thought. In 2018, scans from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter discovered that formations on the planet were actually caused by water that is still there right now. 8. Multiple "Earths" In February 2017, NASA discovered that there might be 7 Earth-like planets orbiting a dwarf star called TRAPPIST-1. In fact, all seven of these planets were found in the same galaxy, which is a very rare thing indeed. 7. Liquid on Titan Saturn has 53 moons that have been named by scientists, and more could actually be named in the future. One of the most popular of these moons is the one known as Titan. It's been the source of much research, and has even been home to an alien race in the Marvel Comics Universe. During a scan by the Cassini Space Probe of NASA, they found that in certain gorges and canyons of Titan, there are actually pools of liquid, specifically hydrocarbons. 6. Comet Soup In 2005, NASA sent their Deep Impact spacecraft into a comet called Tempel 1. If you're curious as to why they would destroy one of their craft by crashing it into a comet on purpose, it is because they wanted to analyze the content and particles that were released from the impact. 5. Saturn's Rings The Rings of Saturn are not only the most defining features of the planet, but also one of the most recognizable things in all of our solar system. Strangely enough NASA speculates that the rings are "dying". 4. Jupiter's Orbit NASA has long tried to get a spacecraft into Jupiter's orbit. But because of conditions in the planet's atmosphere, it's been a very difficult task. Not to mention, getting a craft near the planet in terms of its position in space is also hard. Yet, on July 4th, 2016, the Juno became the first spacecraft to make it into Jupiter's orbit, which by NASA's own admission was one of the hardest things they've ever done. 3. Supermassive Black Hole The Hubble Space Telescope is one of NASA's biggest tools in regards to searching deep space for new discoveries, and in February of 2016, the telescope took a picture of a galaxy and found a black hole of astonishing size. 2. Ice Volcanoes On Earth, volcanoes spew fire, ash, soot, and smoke, but on the dwarf planet (a planet that never matured to full size) called Ceres, the volcanoes ice! This was discovered by NASA via their Dawn Spacecraft in 2015, which was observing Ceres (which orbits between Mars and Jupiter). 1. Reaching Ultima Thule 4 billion miles away from Earth, there is an object known as Ultima Thule. This "celestial body" is actually two round objects made of an unknown composition that are actually fused together. NASA has released the first up-close stereo images of this celestial body via the New Horizons spacecraft, making this the most distant object that a spacecraft from Earth has ever explored. In fact all RS-25 Engine testing happens exclusively at Stennis Space Center! If these look familiar to you, it may be due to the fact that they were used as the space shuttle main engine for the last 30 years. Compared to the 3 RS-25 engines that the space shuttle had the SLS will utilize 4 of them to produce 2 Million pounds of thrust. The thorough testing of the RS-25 plays an essential role in upholding NASA’s high standards of efficient and reliable engines.

NASA Has Just Discovered a New Planet!

09:18
If you've always been interested in outer space, here's news for you: astronomers have recently found a potentially habitable planet! It's called Barnard’s Star B. It has slightly more than 24 hours in a day, and it’s always sunny there no matter what. Actually, it's really cold there, but simple lifeforms can develop and survive in these conditions! Other videos you might like: 10 Facts About Our Planet You Didn't Learn In School https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRXdjc5yxVs The Solar System Is Not Like You Think It Is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FvpAe3MacM& 10 Wonderful Facts About Earth You've Never Heard Before https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yh_2y4olKvM TIMESTAMPS: What this planet’s sun like 0:30 Wobbles = planet? 3:18 What does it mean to be super-earth class planet? 5:07 No dawn at all 6:09 Seas of liquid methane 6:55 And another potential candidate (which is right in our neighborhood) 7:52 Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - Look up high into the dark sky, and you’ll see a little murky-looking circle. No, that’s not Barnard’s moon – it’s the planet’s sun. Now look down. Deep under your feet lie countless rivers, lakes, and seas of liquid methane. - Barnard’s sun is only located 6 light-years away from us, and it’s the 4th closest star to our solar system. Try to imagine our sun 5 times smaller and much less bright. - Though Edward Emerson Barnard wasn’t the first to discover this star, he proved in 1916 that it’s the fastest star known to us. - Barnard’s Star is what astronomers call a red dwarf – a small, dim, and truly ancient star that’s getting pretty close to the end of its life cycle. - The first person to assume there was a planet somewhere near this star was astronomer Peter van de Kamp. Back in the 60s, he observed “wobbles” in the star’s movement. - Astronomers took lots of measurements with the most advanced astronomical equipment you could imagine, and they came out with 99% certainty that the planet Barnard’s Star B exists. - “Super-earth” is just the term astronomers use to describe only the size of a planet that’s larger than Earth but considerably smaller than ice giants like Neptune. - This planet is a huge ball of rock and ice that lies beyond the habitable zone of its star. Even though it’s closer to Barnard’s Star than our Earth is to the Sun, its star provides only 3% of the light that our Sun does. - According to a 2015 study at Cornell University, chances are that simple methane-based lifeforms can develop and survive in these conditions. - The existence of such lifeforms is pure theory. So the idea that this newly found Barnard’s Star B planet is habitable for us humans is really far-fetched for now. NASA's Million Dollar Space Pen vs The Soviet Pencils

06:40
The story of the NASA’s million $ space pen and the soviet pencils has become one of the enduring tales from the space race which still floats around the internet today and goes a bit like this. Patreon : https://www.patreon.com/curiousdroid Paypal.me : https://www.paypal.me/curiousdroid You can now translate this and other curious droid videos, see my video about it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLPVgIytKyg During the 1960’s as NASA was sending the first men in the space, they realise that pens don’t work in zero gravity, so they spent years and millions of tax payer dollars to develop one that did. Meanwhile, in the Soviet Union, the cosmonauts simply used pencils. The moral of the story to many is that NASA was a wasteful government organisation that would be giving your hard earned TAX dollars to some greedy contractors charging sky high prices for a seemingly trivial object whereas the enemy, the Soviets, where common sense and practical. But the story is a myth, however like all good myths it’s based on facts, facts which over time like Chinese whispers end up as grossly exaggerated stories which then are taken at face value and purport to be the real facts. The true story of the “Space Pen” is a bit more down to earth and starts with a sandwich on the Gemini 3 mission of March 23rd, 1965. The crew of the flight were Gus Grissom and John Young. After the mission, it came to light that John Young had smuggled a sandwich on board in his space suit pocket. Although it had been allowed by the director of flight operations, it was frowned upon by the flight surgeon because when they took bites out of the two-day old sandwich in orbit, the crumbs floated around the cabin in micro gravity and that these could get into the electronics and cause a problem. At the time, the astronauts had an exclusive deal with “Life” magazine and some thought that they had planned little stunts like this, so as to reveal them in upcoming articles. In the earlier Mercury missions, it had been common place for non-flight items to have been taken on board missions. When it was then discovered that the two mechanical pencils the crew were using, cost $128.84 each ($986 today) and that NASA had bought 34 of them for a total of $4,382.50, the equivalent of $33,700 in 2017 prices, the press had a field day and there was a public outcry. It turned out that the actual pencils cost $1.75 each but they had custom made housings so that the crew could hold and write with them whilst wearing their thick space suit gloves and it was the R&D and manufacturing cost of these housings which was where the bulk of the money had really gone. The issue here is that people might not know what a flight computer or a rocket engine costs but when they see a pencil costing $128, they might well think what else have unscrupulous contractors been overcharging for. After an investigation, as to what was being carried on to missions, it also turned out that they also had on board four Japanese Pentel pencils which cost $0.49c each, something NASA definitely didn’t want to be known about when they flew alongside the $128 American versions. During the mid-1960’s, Paul Fisher, inventor and owner of the Fisher Pen Company patented what he called the “space pen”. Fisher knew of the issues with the NASA pencils and had the idea of making a pen that would work in space. The Space pen had a cartridge pressurised with nitrogen and that used a special gel ink that became liquid when the ballpoint rotated against the gel. It could write at any angle, on almost any surface, in a vacuum, even underwater and work in temperatures from -46C to +71C. However, he didn’t have any official backing, nor was he contracted by NASA, it was just his idea to make the perfect pen and he funded it privately by his company to the tune of a reportedly $1 million, how true that figure was, might be up for question but its where the $million price tag comes from.

NASA Spacecraft Discovers New Magnetic Process in Turbulent Space

03:24
Though close to home, the space immediately around Earth is full of hidden secrets and invisible processes. In a new discovery reported in the journal Nature, scientists working with NASA’s Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft — MMS — have uncovered a new type of magnetic event in our near-Earth environment by using an innovative technique to squeeze extra information out of the data. Magnetic reconnection is one of the most important processes in the space — filled with charged particles known as plasma — around Earth. This fundamental process dissipates magnetic energy and propels charged particles, both of which contribute to a dynamic space weather system that scientists want to better understand, and even someday predict, as we do terrestrial weather. Reconnection occurs when crossed magnetic field lines snap, explosively flinging away nearby particles at high speeds. The new discovery found reconnection where it has never been seen before — in turbulent plasma. Beginning with the first manned Gemini mission in 1965, commemorative medallions were prepared for the astronauts at their request. These were produced by a company only known as Fliteline and were struck either in a pewter-colored base metal, sometimes painted a gold color, or sterling silver, and were flown on all 10 manned Gemini missions. A Fliteline medallion was designed and produced for Apollo 1, but was never officially flown after a disastrous cabin fire during a launch rehearsal killed the flight crew. The Robbins Company of Attleboro, Massachusetts, was contracted in 1968 to produce commemorative medallions beginning with Apollo 7, the first manned Apollo flight since the Apollo 1 disaster. These were purchased by astronauts and support crew personnel at NASA Astronaut Flight Office, and a total of over 3,000 sterling silver Robbins medallions were flown into space across the 12 manned flights of the Apollo program. Some of these were later sold in public auction for up to $60,000. The basic elements of the medallion design are consistent throughout the 12 medallions in the series, with the main design element and the mission name on the obverse, mission dates on the reverse, primary flight crew names on either the obverse or reverse, and a serial number either on the lower reverse or on the rim. A very small number of Apollo Robbins medallions were also struck in 14k gold, generally ordered by the mission crew as a personal memento. Sterling silver Robbins medallions have continued to be struck for every manned NASA spaceflight, including Skylab and Space Shuttle missions.

The early studies were denoted "Phase A", and in June 1970, "Phase B", which were more detailed and specific. The primary intended use of the Space Shuttle was supporting the future space station, ferrying a minimum crew of four and about 20,000 pounds (9,100 kg) of cargo, and able to be rapidly turned around for future flights. Two designs emerged as front-runners. One was designed by engineers at the Manned Spaceflight Center, and championed especially by George Mueller. This was a two-stage system with delta-winged spacecraft, and generally complex. An attempt to re-simplify was made in the form of the DC-3, designed by Maxime Faget, who had designed the Mercury capsule among other vehicles. Numerous offerings from a variety of commercial companies were also offered, but generally fell by the wayside as each NASA lab pushed for its own version. All of this was taking place in the midst of other NASA teams proposing a wide variety of post-Apollo missions, a number of which would cost as much as Apollo or more. As each of these projects fought for funding, the NASA budget was at the same time being severely constrained. Three were eventually presented to Vice President Agnew in 1969. The shuttle project rose to the top, largely due to tireless campaigning by its supporters. By 1970 the shuttle had been selected as the one major project for the short-term post-Apollo time frame. When funding for the program came into question, there were concerns that the project might be cancelled. This led to an effort to interest the US Air Force in using the shuttle for their missions as well. The Air Force was mildly interested, but demanded a much larger vehicle, far larger than the original concepts. To lower the development costs of the resulting designs, boosters were added, a throw-away fuel tank was adopted, and many other changes made that greatly lowered the reusability and greatly added to vehicle and operational costs. With the Air Force's approval, the system emerged in its operational form.

The History and Future of NASA and Space Travel: Neil deGrasse Tyson - Space Chronicles (2012)

02:14:19
Space Chronicles: Facing the Ultimate Frontier is the 2012 anthology by Neil deGrasse Tyson covering his various writings relating to the history and future of NASA and space travel in general. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0393350371/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0393350371&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=3116d9b9ac64e3d45c2335c8ba178369 Tyson intended the book's original title to be, Failure to Launch: The Dreams and Delusions of Space Enthusiasts. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Chronicles:_Facing_the_Ultimate_Frontier Tyson's research has focused on observations in cosmology, stellar evolution, galactic astronomy and stellar formation. He has held numerous positions at institutions including University of Maryland, Princeton University, the American Museum of Natural History, and Hayden Planetarium. Tyson has written a number of popular books on astronomy. In 1995, he began to write the "Universe" column for Natural History magazine. In a column he authored for the magazine in 2002, Tyson coined the term "Manhattanhenge" to describe the two days annually on which the evening sun aligns with the cross streets of the street grid in Manhattan, making the sunset visible along unobstructed side streets. Tyson's column also influenced his work as a professor with The Great Courses. In 2001, US President George W. Bush appointed Tyson to serve on the Commission on the Future of the United States Aerospace Industry and in 2004 to serve on the President's Commission on Implementation of United States Space Exploration Policy, the latter better known as the "Moon, Mars, and Beyond" commission. Soon afterward he was awarded the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal, the highest civilian honor bestowed by NASA. In 2004, he hosted the four-part Origins miniseries of PBS's Nova, and, with Donald Goldsmith, co-authored the companion volume for this series, Origins: Fourteen Billion Years Of Cosmic Evolution. He again collaborated with Goldsmith as the narrator on the documentary 400 Years of the Telescope which premiered on PBS in April 2009. As director of the Hayden Planetarium, Tyson bucked traditional thinking in order to keep Pluto from being referred to as the ninth planet in exhibits at the center. Tyson has explained that he wanted to look at commonalities between objects, grouping the terrestrial planets together, the gas giants together, and Pluto with like objects and to get away from simply counting the planets. He has stated on The Colbert Report, The Daily Show, and BBC Horizon that this decision has resulted in large amounts of hate mail, much of it from children. In 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) confirmed this assessment by changing Pluto to the dwarf planet classification. Daniel Simone wrote of the interview with Tyson describing his frustration. "For a while, we were not very popular here at the Hayden Planetarium." Tyson recounted the heated on-line debate on the Cambridge Conference Network (CCNet), a "widely read, UK-based Internet chat group" following Benny Peiser's renewed call for reclassification of Pluto's status. Peiser's entry, in which he posted articles from the AP and Boston Globe spawned from the New York Times's article entitled 'Pluto's Not a Planet? Only in New York'. Tyson has been vice-president, president, and chairman of the board of the Planetary Society. He was also the host of the PBS program Nova ScienceNow until 2011. He attended and was a speaker at the Beyond Belief: Science, Religion, Reason and Survival symposium on November 2006. In 2007, Tyson, who is known for his vibrant character, cheerful demeanor, and awe of the vastness of the universe itself, was chosen to be a regular on The History Channel's popular series The Universe. In May 2009, he launched a one-hour radio talk show called StarTalk, which he co-hosted with comedienne Lynne Koplitz. The show was syndicated on Sunday afternoons on KTLK AM in Los Angeles and WHFS in Washington DC. The show lasted for thirteen weeks, but was resurrected in December 2010 and then, co-hosted with comedians Chuck Nice and Leighann Lord instead of Koplitz. Guests range from colleagues in science to celebrities such as Gza, Wil Wheaton, Sarah Silverman, and Bill Maher. The show is also available via the internet through a live stream or in the form of a podcast. In April 2011, Tyson was the keynote speaker at the 93rd International Convention of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society of the Two-year School. He and James Randi delivered a lecture entitled Skepticism, which related directly with the convention's theme of The Democratization of Information: Power, Peril, and Promise. In 2012, Tyson announced that he would appear in a YouTube series based on his radio show StarTalk. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_deGrasse_Tyson

Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago. Learning by listening is a great way to: - increases imagination and understanding - improves your listening skills - improves your own spoken accent - learn while on the move - reduce eye strain Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article).

AWESOME IMAGES OF SPACE BY NASA

02:08
Video Title :AWESOME IMAGES OF SPACE BY NASA . IMAGE (Imager for Magnetopause-to-Aurora Global Exploration) is a NASA Medium Explorers mission that studied the global response of the Earth's magnetosphere to changes in the solar wind. It was believed lost but as of August 2018 might be recoverable. It was launched March 25, 2000 by a Delta II rocket from Vandenberg AFB on a two-year mission. Almost six years later, it unexpectedly ceased operations in December 2005 during its extended mission and was declared lost.[10] The spacecraft was part of NASA's Sun-Earth Connections Program, and during its run had over 400 research articles published in peer-reviewed journals using its data.[11] It had special cameras that provided various breakthroughs in understanding the dynamics of plasma around the Earth. The Principal Investigator was Jim Burch of the Southwest Research Institute. . In January 2018, an amateur satellite tracker found it to be transmitting some signals back to Earth.[7] NASA made attempts to communicate with the spacecraft and determine its payload status, but has had to track down and adapt old hardware and software to the current systems.[12] On February 25, contact with IMAGE was again lost only to be reestablished on March 4, 2018. The signal disappeared once again on August 5, 2018. Recovery efforts are underway and if successful NASA may decide to fund a restarted mission. . The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA, /ˈnæsə/) is an independent agency of the United States Federal Government responsible for the civilian space program, as well as aeronautics and aerospace research.[note 1] . NASA was established in 1958, succeeding the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). The new agency was to have a distinctly civilian orientation, encouraging peaceful applications in space science.[7][8][9] Since its establishment, most US space exploration efforts have been led by NASA, including the Apollo Moon landing missions, the Skylab space station, and later the Space Shuttle. NASA is supporting the International Space Station and is overseeing the development of the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, the Space Launch System and Commercial Crew vehicles. The agency is also responsible for the Launch Services Program which provides oversight of launch operations and countdown management for unmanned NASA launches. . Powered by : RADEON X . This is an audio version of the Wikipedia Article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NASA_Space_Flight_Medal 00:01:19 See also Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! According to its statutes, it is awarded "for significant achievement or service during individual participation as a civilian or military astronaut, pilot, mission specialist, payload specialist, or other space flight participant in a space flight mission." In practice, the medal is bestowed upon any astronaut (US or foreign) who flies aboard a United States space mission, and typically every subsequent flight is honored with an additional award. Multiple awards of the decoration are annotated either by award stars or oak leaf clusters (depending on the civilian or military status of the recipient and, if military, the branch of service). The NASA Space Flight Medal is also authorized for wear on active uniforms of the United States military and is worn after all military decorations. For those who perform an act of gallantry or heroic action while engaged in a U.S. space mission, NASA also presents an award known as the Congressional Space Medal of Honor. This is separate award from the Medal of Honor which is a U.S. military decoration for extreme bravery.

Why is NASA Still Using 1960's Parachute Test Results?

03:53
Results from parachute tests done in the 1960s are still valid, so NASA is still using that data. Talk about getting your money's worth! NASA only recently started doing supersonic deceleration tests with the Low Density Supersonic Decelerator. Before that, the agency was doing wind tunnel tests for strength and deployment tests, of course, but also using Apollo-era data from high-altitude supersonic tests since that was the last time there was money for such expensive methods. For more on Apollo-era parachute testing, check out these two older articles One from Discovery News Space: http://news.discovery.com/space/history-of-space/curiositys-retro-parachute-120618.htm And the other from Vintage Space:http://amyshirateitel.com/2011/06/14/preparing-planetary-parachute/ Want more Vintage Space? Could Nasa Become A Galactic Empire In Future?

08:17
Be like SMART BANANA: https://goo.gl/JTfP6L Could NASA become a Galactic Empire in future? Hello everyone! Welcome to our channel! It's not a secret that almost all the most advanced developments and inventions are related to space, and thus with NASA – one of the most intelligent (just like me!) and powerful organizations in the world! And what if sooner or later NASA becomes a private organization and falls into the hands of some evil genius with the manners and intentions of a real Sith lord? Maybe someone is already plotting to take over the world in this way?! ☺ No, no, I don't want to scare you, my dear friends, because today in Smart Banana we will just talk about some unexpected and even cute facts from NASA's life! But what if all the good that we see in reality is closely intertwined with the secret intentions of the Sith!? ☺ Let’s see then… ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our Social Media: Facebook: http://facebook.com/enjoy.science/ The Bright Side of Youtube: https://goo.gl/rQTJZz 5-Minute Crafts Youtube: https://www.goo.gl/8JVmuC ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more videos and articles visit: http://www.brightside.me/

Johnson Space Center (JSC) is the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Manned Spacecraft Center, where human spaceflight training, research, and flight control are conducted. It was built and leased to NASA by Joseph L. Smith & Associates, Inc. It was renamed in honor of the late U.S. president and Texas native, Lyndon B. Johnson, by an act of the United States Senate on February 19, 1973. It consists of a complex of 100 buildings constructed on 1,620 acres (660 hectares) in the Clear Lake Area of Houston, which acquired the official nickname "Space City" in 1967. The center is home to NASA's astronaut corps, and is responsible for training astronauts from both the U.S. and its international partners. It has become popularly known for its flight control function, identified as "Mission Control" and "Houston" during the Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, Apollo–Soyuz, and Space Shuttle program flights. The Manned Spacecraft Center grew out of the Space Task Group (STG) headed by Robert Gilruth, formed soon after the creation of NASA to co-ordinate the US manned spaceflight program. The STG was based at the Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, but reported organizationally to the Goddard Space Flight Center just outside Washington, D.C. To meet the growing needs of the US human spaceflight program, plans began in 1961 to expand its staff to its own organization, and move it to a new facility. This was constructed in 1962 and 1963 on land donated by the Humble Oil company through Rice University, and officially opened its doors in September 1963. Today, JSC is one of ten major NASA field centers.
