How to Read, Take Notes On and Understand Journal Articles | Essay Tips
The first pilot to my Essay Tips series! I share my method for reading and understanding a journal article or paper quickly and efficiently including how to take good, concise notes and remember useful citations. If your method differs from mine or you think you can give me some pointers then let me know in the comments! This is the first in a series of videos I'm hoping to produce while undertaking my PhD at the University of Exeter on tips for students at university or college whether undergraduate, postgraduate or otherwise. Note: The programme to the left (which I highlight in) is Mendeley. Apologies for forgetting to state this in the video!! If you've enjoyed this video then please do check out the rest of my channel. The Economy Is Structured to Make the Rich Richer: Economics, Governance
Dean Baker (born July 13, 1958) is an American macroeconomist and co-founder, with Mark Weisbrot, of the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR) in Washington, D.C. He is credited as being one of the first economists to have discovered the 2007–2008 United States housing bubble. In 1981, Baker graduated from Swarthmore College with a bachelor's degree in history with minors in economics and philosophy. In 1983, he received a master's degree in economics from the University of Denver. In 1988, he received a PhD from the University of Michigan in economics. From 1988 to 1989, Baker was a lecturer at University of Michigan and then, from 1989 to 1992, an assistant professor of economics at Bucknell University. From 1992 to 1998, Baker was an economist at the Economic Policy Institute. During this time, he published a paper with Mark Weisbrot in a journal of evolutionary economics.[6] In 1999, Baker co-founded, together with economist Mark Weisbrot, the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR), an independent, nonpartisan think tank, which produces economic research on topics that affect people's lives to contribute to the public debate (social security, healthcare, the national budget), and internationally (global economy, International Monetary Fund, and Latin America policy).[7] Also in 1999, Baker was a senior research fellow at the Preamble Center for Public Policy. Baker has consulted with officials from the World Bank and has provided testimony to the Joint Economic Committee of the U.S. Congress and to the OECD's Trade Union Advisory Council. From 1996 to 2006, Baker was the author of a weekly online commentary the economic reporting of the New York Times and Washington Post.[8] The Economic Reporting Review was published from 1996 to 2006. From 2006, he has continued this commentary on his weblog Beat The Press, which was formerly published at The American Prospect, but is now located at the CEPR website. Baker won the Revere Award, along with Steve Keen and Nouriel Roubini, for predicting the crash of the United States housing bubble and the resulting recession, which occurred from 2007 to 2008[9]. He warned about the coming crisis and the related government policies in multiple articles, op-eds and interviews from 2002 to 2005.[10] Basing his outlook on house-price data-sets produced by the U.S. government, Baker asserted that there was a bubble in the US housing market in August 2002,[11] well before its peak,[12] and predicted that the collapse of this bubble would lead to recession. His prediction for when the recession would start was off by only one quarter.[13][14][15][16][17] Regarding the housing bubble, Baker was critical of chairman of the Federal Reserve, Alan Greenspan.[18][19][20] He has been critical of the regulatory framework of the real estate and financial industries, the use of financial instruments like collateralized debt obligation, and the performance and conflict of interest of U.S. politicians and regulators.[21] Baker opposed the U.S. government bailout of Wall Street banks on the basis that the only people who stood to lose from their collapse were their shareholders and high-income CEOs. Regarding any hypothetical, negative effects of not extending the bailout, he explained, "We know how to keep the financial system operating even as banks go into bankruptcy and receivership,"[22] citing U.S. government action taken during the S&L crisis of the 1980s.[23] He has ridiculed the U.S. elite for favoring it, asking, "How do you make a DC intellectual look less articulate than Sarah Palin being interviewed by Katie Couric? That's easy. You ask them how failure to pass the bailout will give us a Great Depression." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dean_Baker

How to write a literature review
How to write a literature review. It’s easier than you might think! In this video, I demonstrate how to search the literature and identify relevant papers for your literature review. I do a pubmed search using Boolean operators and MeSH terms (these are extremely powerful tools that will help you sift through the large number of academic papers out there). So if you’re doing a master’s thesis or a PhD, or you’re doing research and writing a paper, at some point, you’ll need to do a lit review. A big part of that review is the search and this video is going to help you get that right. You might be doing a systematic literature review or meta-analysis – again, you’ll need to do a good PubMed search that identifies the right studies. Thanks to BMC !!! ----------------------------- This video was sponsored by BMC – (click here to go to BMC: https://goo.gl/RFaUA2 ). As a pioneer of open access publishing, BMC has an evolving portfolio of high-quality peer-reviewed journals including broad interest titles such as BMC Biology and BMC Medicine, specialist journals such as Malaria Journal and Microbiome, and the BMC series. BMC is committed to continual innovation to better support the needs of research communities, ensuring the integrity of the research we publish, and championing the benefits of open research. BMC is part of Springer Nature, giving us greater opportunities to help authors connect and advance discoveries across the world. I’m particularly excited about having BMC’s support because I’ve been working with them for nearly 15 years as the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Globalization and Health. I’ve been extremely impressed by them as a company that has integrity and that is truly making the world a better place. LEARN MORE about literature reviews ------------------------------------------------------------ Of course, there is more to a literature review than just the search. You need to have a structured approach to selecting paper, extracting data, writing the review itself and creating a bibliography. The Structure and Economics of Scholarly Publishing
On Friday, April 17, the UO Libraries hosted a talk by Carl T. Bergstrom, a University of Washington evolutionary biologist and well-known analyst of the scholarly communications industry. Bergstrom's talk is entitled "The Structure and Economics of Scholarly Publishing." Bergstrom is an expert on the economics of journal publishing and has developed a tool called the "eigenfactor," which provides an alternative to the impact factors currently used to rank journals. Bergstrom also discussed the sky-rocketing rates libraries and others have to pay for subscriptions to scholarly journals. Subscription rates have quickly outpaced library budgets for journal acquisitions and have limited their ability to provide university faculty members with ready access to journal articles.

Economics of Climate Change: Mark Z. Jacobson | The New School
This talk explores the major environmental issues of global warming, air pollution, and energy insecurity and outlines a plan to solve them. Mark Z. Jacobson, director of the Atmosphere/Energy Program at Stanford University, considers the many facets of viable wind, water, and sunlight energy production and concludes that it could fully—and economically—power the world in the next 20 to 40 years. Jacobson and his team at Stanford University have pioneered new atmospheric research and analysis techniques that give a picture of the current state of the atmosphere, show the effects of pollution from aerosols, ethanol, agriculture, and ultraviolet radiation, and predict how these pollutants might affect the climate. Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis (SCEPA) | http://www.newschool.edu/scepa http://www.economicpolicyresearch.org Mark Z. Jacobson is Director of the Atmosphere/Energy Program and Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University. Episode 19: Tyler Cowen on Maximizing Growth and Thinking for the Future
Blog post with show notes and transcript: https://www.preposterousuniverse.com/podcast/2018/10/22/episode-19-tyler-cowen-on-maximizing-growth-and-thinking-for-the-future/ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/seanmcarroll Economics, like other sciences (social and otherwise), is about what the world does; but it's natural for economists to occasionally wander out into the question of what we should do as we live in the world. A very good example of this is a new book by economist Tyler Cowen, Stubborn Attachments. Tyler will be well-known to many listeners for his long-running blog Marginal Revolution (co-created with his colleague Alex Tabarrok) and his many books and articles. Here he offers a surprising new take on how society should arrange itself, based on the simple idea that the welfare of future generations counts for just as much as the welfare of the current one. From that starting point, Tyler concludes that the most moral thing for us to do is to work to maximize economic growth right now, as that's the best way to ensure that future generations are well-off. We talk about this idea, as well as the more general idea of how to think like an economist. (In the second half of the podcast we veer off into talking about quantum mechanics and the multiverse, to everyone's benefit.) Tyler Cowen is the Holbert C. Harris professor of economics and General Director of the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. He is the author of over a dozen books and many journal articles, and writes frequently for the popular press. His blog Marginal Revolution is one of the leading economics blogs on the internet. He is widely recognized for his eclectic interests, from chess to music to ethnic dining.

Dr Thomas DiLorenzo How America Became a Corporate Welfare State - Lessons for The Bahamas
When: Thursday, February 26, 2015 at 6:30pm Where: The auditorium at The Harry C. Moore Library, College of The Bahamas Map Presented by: The Nassau Institute and Templeton Religion Trust in collaboration with The Banking, Economics and Finance Department and The Economics Society of The College of The Bahamas Theme of the speech: The American economic system has been transformed from a capitalist system with pockets of "crony capitalism" (profits earned through government connections instead of customer service) to a system of crony capitalism with pockets of real capitalism. This transformation was the result of a 225-year ideological debate over the proper role of government in society, including its role in economic intervention. This lecture will explain this transformation from historical, biographical, and economic perspectives, and will suggest ways to reverse this insidious transformation of American economic life and, indeed, of economic life in many other countries as well. Dr. Thomas DiLorenzo's brief Curriculum vitae: Dr. Thomas DiLorenzo is Professor of Economics at Loyola University Maryland and a Senior Fellow of the Ludwig von Mises Institute in Auburn, Alabama. He holds a Ph.D. in economics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and a B.A. degree in economics from Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania. He is the author of dozens of academic journal articles in such publications as the American Economic Review, the top peer-reviewed journal in the field; Economic Inquiry; Public Choice; International Review of Law and Economics; Quarterly Journal of Austrian Economics, and many others. Dr. DiLorenzo is also the author or co-author of fourteen books, the latest of which are: Organized Crime: The Unvarnished Truth About Government; Hamilton’s Curse: How Jefferson’s Arch-Enemy Betrayed the American Revolution and What it Means for Americans Today; Lincoln Unmasked; How Capitalism Saved America: The Untold History of Our Country; and The Real Lincoln. Professor DiLorenzo is a columnist and blogger for LewRockell.com and Mises.org and is widely published in the “popular” press, including the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post, Readers Digest, and dozens of other newspapers and magazines. He has been interviewed on hundreds of radio talk shows, including the Rush Limbaugh Show, as well as on CNN, CSPAN, FOX Business Channel, and MSNBC. In 2012 he was awarded the George W. Koether Award for Writing in Defense of Liberty by the Ludwig von Mises Institute.
