In partnership with the Danish Embassy in the United States, the Project on Prosperity and Development will be publishing a report entitled Blended Finance and Aligning Private Investment with Global Development. Over the past few decades, the composition of development finance has flipped from being primarily funded through public-sector resources to intensified interest and investment from the private sector. Blended finance is one method to unlock private capital for development, referring to structuring global development investment deals with a mixed portfolio of public and private funds to spread and smooth risk-reward profiles, “crowd in” catalytic private investment in sustainable financing, and create markets in developing and new contexts. Professor Niall Ferguson examines the origins of the pillars of the world's financial system, and how behind every great historical phenomenon -- empires and republics, wars and revolutions -- there lies a financial secret. Episode 1: Dreams of Avarice. From Shylock's pound of flesh to the loan sharks of Glasgow, from the 'promises to pay' on Babylonian clay tablets to the Medici banking system, Professor Ferguson explains the origins of credit and debt and why credit networks are indispensable to any civilization. Episode 2: Human Bondage. How did finance become the realm of the masters of the universe? Through the rise of the bond market in Renaissance Italy. With the advent of bonds, war finance was transformed and spread to north-west Europe and across the Atlantic. It was the bond market that made the Rothschilds the richest and most powerful family of the 19th century. And today governments are asking it to bail them out. Episode 3: Blowing Bubbles. Why do stock markets produce bubbles and busts? Professor Ferguson goes back to the origins of the joint stock company in Amsterdam and Paris. He draws telling parallels between the current stock market crash and the 18th-century Mississippi Bubble of Scottish financier John Law and the 2001 Enron bankruptcy. He shows why humans have a herd instinct when it comes to investment, and why no one can accurately predict when the bulls might stampede. Episode 4: Risky Business. Life is a risky business -- which is why people take out insurance. But faced with an unexpected disaster, the state has to step in. Professor Ferguson travels to post-Katrina New Orleans to ask why the free market can't provide adequate protection against catastrophe. His quest for an answer takes him to the origins of modern insurance in the early 19th century and to the birth of the welfare state in post-war Japan. Episode 5: Safe As Houses. It sounded so simple: give state-owned assets to the people. After all, what better foundation for a property-owning democracy than a campaign of privatisation encompassing housing? An economic theory says that markets can't function without mortgages, because it's only by borrowing against their assets that entrepreneurs can get their businesses off the ground. But what if mortgages are bundled together and sold off to the highest bidder? Episode 6: Chimerica. Since the 1990s, once risky markets in Asia, Latin America and eastern Europe have become better investments than the UK or US stock market. The explanation is the rise of 'Chimerica', the economic marriage of China and the United States. But does it make sense for poor Chinese savers to lend to rich American spenders? http://www.RebelMystic.com

Are U.S. markets poised to garner more investment? Has capital stopped fleeing China? Are other Asian markets drawing more attention? As investors become more aware of climate and sustainability risks, financial markets are shifting in response. One in every six dollars invested in the United States is screened for environmental, social or governance factors, and the proportion is rising. Green investment strategies whether that means investing in mature businesses with optimized environmental footprints or in new business models arising from the demand for sustainable products are gaining traction. This panel brings together a diverse array of professionals to discuss the emerging trends and challenges in the green investment world. It will focus especially on the role that public policy can play in encouraging and facilitating green investment. What are the policy tools, incentives, guarantees and other mechanisms that steer green investment effectively? How do you leverage public dollars to unlock private finance for green growth? Panelists will examine the extent to which green companies rely on government subsidies or tax incentives, and discuss how sustainable investing can help provide the capital to scale clean energy technology needed for a sustainable economy.

Finance clearly plays a positive role in the global economy, however, what happens when it becomes so large that it can actually damage an economy? The recent crisis has raised concerns that some countries may have financial systems that are "too large" compared to the size of the domestic economy. The US financial sector exemplifies this theory as it grew six times faster than nominal GDP. Doireann Mc Dermott speaks to Ugo Panizza from the Graduate Institute about the finance sector.

This year's forum will focus on "SCENARIOS, STRESS AND FORECASTS IN FINANCE". The aim of this conference is to highlight the methodological and regulatory challenges posed by the question of making scenarios, stress tests and forecasts in finance. Stress testing is becoming a widely used tool, not only for risk management, but also to assess global vulnerabilities in a financial system. Regulatory guidelines on stress testing require financial institutions to build models and make scenarios for macro and micro stress testing. Accurately forecasting and making an optimal use of these forecasts for investment decisions pose renewed challenges to the investment management industry.
