High School Exchange Beneficial for Both Students and Host Families
Flagstaff is growing more and more each year, by not only local residents, but international students, as well. Miguel Guerrero sat down with Angela, the regional coordinator for Education First (EF) High School Exchange Year, and Paula Grun, a German high school exchange student, to discuss the benefits of the program. EF High School Exchange Year is a non-profit organization that places foreign exchange students from over 13 countries with local host families. The students attend a local high school for a full school year and immerse themselves in American culture. Grun, 17, currently attends Flagstaff Arts & Leadership Academy. She enjoys the contrast the school provides in comparison to typical schools in Germany. Grun describes the strong relationship between her and her host mother, Sharon, and the support she's received since she'd arrived in Flagstaff. She's enjoyed her experience thus far, and has grown a lot and learned more about herself, the United States and her home country. Host families, upon receiving an international student, are encouraged to make the student a part of their family. It's not only important for the visiting student to experience American culture, but for the host family to get a better sense of the student's home country as well. Anyone interested in becoming a host can fill out an online application and go through a screening process. Host families are asked to provide room and board, daily meals and a reasonable amount of transportation to and from social activities. More information can be found online at welcome.efexchangeyear.org.

The Cain family in New Zealand have hosted an overseas exchange student from France. Their daughter has also been on exchange to France with Student Exchange Australia New Zealand. 5 Tips for Exchange Students Coming to Sweden
5 Tips for Exchange Students Coming to Sweden: 1. Swedes usually don't wear shoes indoors. 2. Try to get a lot of sun during spring and summer to avoid seasonal depression. 3. Recycling is common in Sweden and I recommend you ask your host family how to do it if they don't tell you. 4. Sweden is not a liberal country when it comes to drugs and if you get caught doing drugs you could get in trouble. 5. People in Sweden like to "fika", which means we drink coffee or tea or something like that together with friends and family.

What is the Host Family Program?
Interested international students have the opportunity to pair up with a local host family. Host families range from single individuals to families with children. They are active members of the community and have a desire to learn more about another culture. Host families commit to hosting an international student for the duration of their stay at Davidson. This is usually for a four-year period. Ideally, families and students should meet at least once a month but keep in contact with each other on a more regular basis.
