Estonians comment on the euro, one year after joining the currency.

Set up shot of Economist at Bank of Estonia Peeter Luikmel 5. Bank of Estonia poster 6. SOUNDBITE (English) Peeter Luikmel, Economist at Bank of Estonia: "Well this year certainly, 2011, has been better than expected, by far better. Indeed, the recovery of exports was very strong and the Estonian unemployment rate, which was close to 20 percent in the peak of the crisis, has decreased significantly. But the outlook, as everywhere, is much more uncertain, to be mild." 7. Wide of counter at Maxima shopping centre 8. Woman typing in PIN code into machine 9. SOUNDBITE (English) Erkki Erilaid, Shopping Centre Manager: "Estonian economic growth very rapidly. There was a sharp decline in unemployment which increased demand and this gave good reason for producers and retailers to increase prices, of course people doesn't like it very much so we are not very happy with new currency in first half of year." 10. Close of price for oranges 11. Erilaid adjusting price sign 12. Various of shopping counter as customers buy goods 13. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Tatjana Voronova, vox pop, Tallinn resident: (non-verbatim translation) "I have small pension which is required to pay for the rent, medicines and everything. So it is difficult to get used to. The shopping is now more expensive." 14. Close of euro notes being given as change 15. Various of shopping counter 16. SOUNDBITE (Estonia) Kersti Mari, vox pop, Tallinn resident: (non-verbatim translation) "It is strange for me, with this money its hard to understand how much money was spent. This is a shrewd type of money." 17. Wide of deer stall at Christmas market 18. Mid of deer in stall ++NIGHT SHOTS++ 19. Wide of street scene 20. Sign for hot wine priced in euros 21. Various of food stalls 22. SOUNDBITE (English) Keitlin Kukevaal, Tallinn Student running nut stall: "We have lots of (un)employment), lots of unemployed people in Estonia. There's not so much jobs everywhere and if there are jobs they're really hard to do and it's really man work and that's not so great. But most people that were hired are young people freshly out of college, or out of high school but if old people lose their jobs, like maybe 50 (years of age) or so, they don't get any new jobs." 23. Wide of Tallinn Christmas market STORYLINE Estonians looked back on the country's first year with the euro currency on Friday. On the first of January 2011 Estonia became the 17th European country to switch to the euro. It was the first former Soviet state to adopt the currency. According to Bank of Estonia economist Peeter Luikmel, the change has seen a "better than expected" 2011 for the country's finances. However the future consequences of being one of the newest members of the troubled Eurozone might not be so positive. "The recovery of exports was very strong and the Estonian unemployment rate, which was close to 20 percent in the peak of the crisis, has decreased significantly, but the outlook, as everywhere, is much more uncertain," Luikmel said. The improving economic conditions have also had an unpopular effect on the price of consumer goods. "There was a sharp decline in unemployment which increased demand and this gave good reason for producers and retailers to increase prices, of course people doesn't like it very much," said Tallinn shopping centre manager Erkki Erilaid. In fact many of those that spoke to AP Television at Erilaid's shopping centre on Friday seemed a little underwhelmed by their new currency. "It is strange for me, with this money its hard to understand how much money was spent," said another. To Bail Out Ukraine Is More Important Than Greece — Anders Aslund

07:55
What You Need To Know: ✓ Ukraine requires much less bailout money than Greece, can be much more efficient in using them ✓ Ukraine is doing much better on bailout reforms than Greece ✓ Ukraine’s reform priorities should be deregulation & privatization ✓ Ukraine is of greater geostrategic interest for EU than Greece In his recent article, Senior Atlantic Council Fellow Anders Aslund, a Swedish economist who has been researching Ukraine for over a decade, writes that Ukraine is doing everything right and Greece is doing everything wrong. He elaborates that Greece has not suffered from austerity but because they tried to minimize reforms and budget cuts thereby losing 25% in GDP over the course of six years. Aslund believes Ukraine requires much less bailout money than Greece and can be much more efficient in using them. The European Union is spending about 240 billion Euro on Greece, while Ukraine has received a $16 billion loan in 2008 and this year will get $5 billion of a $40 billion dollar package negotiated for the next 4 years. “Why not 10 billion Euro more for Ukraine? It should be used in order to stabilize the reserves so that we don’t have the financial meltdown that we saw last year, which was entirely because the reserves were too small,” says Aslund. He notes that the EU has no obligations to Ukraine, but as they are neighbors he believes it’s in Europe self interest to support stability on the continent. Hromadske brought up the recent controversial law which would readjust Ukrainian loans taken out in US dollars, to the exchange rate of 2009 rather than today’s higher rate, questioning how that might affect Ukraine’s standing towards additional financial assistance. Aslund believes the new law is completely unacceptable, stating, “It would cost 5-6% of GDP, this would destroy the country to the benefit of a very small upper middle class elite who took these foreign mortgages before June 2009. If it came through I think it would stop all international financing for Ukraine. “ Aslund concludes that Ukraine’s reform priorities today should be deregulation in order to get rid of unnecessary bureaucracy, and privatization to avoid siphoning of funds from state assets. Hromadske International's Nataliya Gumenyuk and Ian Bateson spoke with Anders Aslund via Skype on July 12, 2015. Get up to speed on Ukraine. Ukraine Currency Slump: Black market for foreign currency grows in Ukraine amid hryvnia woes

00:44
The black market for foreign currency in Ukraine is growing. That's down in part to a policy brought in by the National Bank which limits official sales of US dollars to a maxium of 120 in a single transaction. That comes against the backdrop of record slump in Ukraine's currency, the hryvnia, which fell sharply last week when the country moved to toward a floating exchange rate. Analysts look at what''s ahead if Yanukovych confirmed as president

Set up shot of Vladimir Kornilov, MP for Party of Regions, presidential candidate Viktor Yanukovych''s party 4. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Vladimir Kornilov, MP for Party of the Regions: "The overwhelming majority of the population in western Ukraine, according to all the public opinion surveys by various companies, believe it is the top priority of the Ukrainian leadership''s foreign policy to improve relations with Russia that have worsened over the past years." 5. Set up shot of Ukrainian Peoples Self Defence (UNSO) leader Dmytro Korchinski 6. SOUNDBITE: (Ukrainian) Dmytro Korchinski, Leader of UNSO, a Nationalist organisation: "We expect Yanukovych to go back on his promises (of closer ties with Russia and the introduction of Russian language as the second language) but if he doesn''t, this will lead to the mobilisation of the nationalist elements in society. I think this is not bad because nationalism here should turn from going through the motions to real actions in the future." 7. Wide shot of news briefing by Ukrainian and Russian analysts from various organisations 8. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Mikhail Pohrebinsky, Director of the independent Kiev Centre for Political and Conflict Studies: "For us it is very important to continue cooperation with the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. We badly need investment and in order to gain more legitimacy and improve his reputation in dealing with Europe, Yanukovych will not clearly steer a course towards Russia." 9. Wide of street with store signs showing exchange rates 10. Close up of sign with exchange rates showing rates for US dollar, euro and rouble against Ukrainian hyrvna 11. SOUNDBITE: (Ukrainian) Vox Pop, Raya (no surname given), pensioner: "Promises are always promises, they (people involved in the 2004 Orange Revolution) worked for five years and nothing changed so I think now you need another 10 years to achieve some changes." 16. Cutaway of market 17. Tilt down of statue on Independence Square, which became a symbol of the Orange Revolution 18. Yanukovych supporters clad in blue walking along street 19. Pedestrians walking 20. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Vox Pop, Yelena Nikolayeva, resident: "He will take a neutral stance. I don''t think he will worsen the situation with either side because pulling the blanket to one side means he may lose ties with the other." 21. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Vox Pop, Svetlana Shtepka, resident: "To be closer to Europe by being more indebted to it equals slavery rather than friendship. But if you are on an equal footing with Europe, this is good." 22. Wide of Kiev square STORYLINE The apparent victory of Russia-friendly candidate Viktor Yanukovych in Ukraine''s presidential election looks set to pave the way for Moscow''s growing influence in a country that has laboured to build bridges to the West. Ukraine''s current leaders, including Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, were swept to power on the back of peaceful street protests in 2004 that came to be known as the Orange Revolution. The pro-Western movement was hailed in the United States and Europe as a victory for democracy and a blow to Russia''s lingering grip over politics in the former Soviet Union. A Yanukovych win this time around would close that chapter in the country''s political history. Ukraine Travel Guide (HD 1080p)

38:10
Ukraine Trip 2017, Ukraine Travel Guide, Ukraine Tourism & Vacations Travel Videos HD, World Travel Guide http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=World1Tube WARNING ( 1 ): ========== There are risks in traveling to eastern Ukraine because of the war between the Donbass irregular forces and the Ukrainian forces in the eastern areas of Luhansk and Donetsk. While tourists are unlikely to be the intended targets of violence, current protests cause complications to visitors, since services are disrupted. ----------------- Ukraine (Ukrainian: Україна) is a country in Eastern Europe. It lies at the northwest end of the Black Sea, with Russia to the east, Belarus to the north, Poland to the northwest, Slovakia and Hungary to the west, and Romania to the south west and south, with Moldova in between. Most of the country (the central and eastern portions) was formerly a part of Russian Empire; after the October Revolution and the Civil War, the entire country, known as the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, was a part of the Soviet Union. Ukraine is the second-largest country in Europe, albeit with a slightly declining population. See in Ukraine ================ Ukraine is a country worth seeing and visiting over and over. See UNESCO listed Lviv centre, Residence of Bukovinian and Dalmatian Metropolitans in Chernivtsi, Saint-Sophia Cathedral and Pechersk Lavra in Kiev. Do in Ukraine ================== Hike in Carpathian Mountains around Rakhiv. Conquer 2,061m Hoverla, part of the Chornohora mountain range. Kayak down Dniester and admire Kamianets-Podilskyi and Khotyn castles. Chill out on Crimea beaches in summer. Buy in Ukraine ==================== Travel Warning WARNING ( 2 ): Be aware that is illegal to take any items of historical importance out of the country. This includes badges, medals, icons, historical paintings, etc. This law is strictly enforced at all exit points of the country and one risks heavy fines and/or imprisonment. To shop you will most certainly need local currency (hryvnia). British pound, Euro, US dollar and other currency exchange points are very common in cities, and the exchange rate is usually very fair (except in Kiev, where the exchange rate is higher compared to other cities). However, sometimes and in some banks there are problems with cash deposits (or that is the official version), so do not exchange too many dollars unless you're traveling to the more provincial areas. When doing person-to-person payments you might be able to pay in Euros or US dollars, as those are widely recognized, and you might in fact get better rates than in official exchange points. However, be careful, because it's not legal to make payments with foreign currency. If you want to buy any kind of artwork in Kiev, the place to visit is Andriivskij Uzviz (Андріївський узвіз in Ukrainian, Андреевский спуск in Russian). If you don't want to have trouble exchanging money keep one of these currencies: EUR, RUB, USD. In South and East Ukraine, it is almost impossible to exchange other currency. In Western Ukraine (especially in Lviv) PLN (polish zloty) can also be exchanged without any problems. Eat in Ukraine =================== Ukrainian cuisine is quite tasty, but just as other cuisines in the region uses a lot of fat ingredients, especially in the festive dishes. Traditional local food includes "salo" (salted lard) and soups like "borshch" (борщ in Ukrainian) made of red beets or "solianka" (солянка in Ukrainian) which is a delicious meat soup. The first, salo, is perhaps something you might not make yourself try - however is a delicious side dish, as for the soups being a must-have dish. If you are outside a big city or in doubt about food, exercise caution and common sense about where you buy food. Try to buy groceries only in supermarkets or large grocery stores, always check the expiration date, and never buy meat or dairy products on the street (you can buy them at the market but not near the market). In most towns in Ukraine there are some very good restaurants. Read the menu boards posted by the entrance of every establishment to help you to choose. You may also find nice places to eat not by signs, but just by the smoke of traditional wood fires. These are often places where they serve traditional Ukrainian food, including very tasty shashlyky (шашлики in Ukrainian). Restaurateurs are very friendly, and, more often than not, you will be one of their first foreign visitors. Next to the "borshch", you might also ask for "varenyky" (вареники in Ukrainian, dumplings filled with meat, vegetables or fruits) or "deruny" (деруни, potato pancakes). You have to try varenyky with potatoes and cottage cheese in a sautéed onion and sourcream sauce, a fantastic dish. These are just starters, but ones that might fill you up quickly.

Swiss inflation rate slides in February

01:15
The euro rallied against the Swiss franc today as Switzerland's government released a few statistical reports. The labor market was stable, while the inflation rate disappointed experts. For the latest three months, consumer prices advanced by 0.1%. However, the CPI slipped to negative territory in February. The annual rate fell 0.1%. The forex reserves of the Swiss central bank shrank from 438 to 433.5 billion francs. One of the safe-haven currencies notably appreciated in late February amid the Ukrainian conflict. The exchange rate of the euro/franc pair declined below 1 franc 21.50 rappen in a long while. We already saw a reversed dynamics in March. Today's sluggish inflationary data put some pressure on the franc, but the drop was only around 15 points. Ahead of the weekend, the euro/franc cross is trading at 1 franc 21.90 rappen. Against the buck and yen, the Swiss currency is rising further. The euro rallied against the Swiss franc today as Switzerland's government released a few statistical reports. Ukraine: National Bank of Ukraine issues commemorative coin dedicated to Crimea

01:52
Kiev residents reacted to the Ukrainian National Bank's launch of a commemorative coin dedicated to Crimea, in the Ukrainian capital on Wednesday. One resident said that "it is necessary to remind everyone that Ukraine is a state and we, as citizens, must remember that it is our territory, that it was stolen, that it must be returned sooner or later because it is illegal and unfair." Another resident discussed a study, which according to him shows "a growing number of citizens who are again inclined to an alliance with Russia," with the number growing "from 22 percent to 29 percent of those who support an alliance with Russia." He went on to say that "if people are not constantly reminded [of the past], then they literally have a period when everything is forgotten and displaced; and that period is very short." There will be a reported 45,000 coins in circulation, with the coin's denomination equaling five hryvnia. The obverse of the coin shows the Ayu-Dag Mountain, which is said to symbolise Crimea, the antique ship on the waves, the gazebo in Chersonesus, where Vladimir the Great was reputedly baptised, and the Bakhchisaray Palace. The reverse of the commemorative coin shows the map of Ukraine and the inscription reading "The Autonomous Republic of Crimea" and "Ukraine." Russian markets and currency plummet because of crisis in Ukraine

01:38
Russian markets dropped about 10 percent on Monday and its currency fell to its lowest level ever against the dollar and the euro as worries grew over the potential economic repercussions of the crisis in neighbouring Ukraine. Russia intervened over the weekend to take control of Crimea, a Ukrainian peninsula with strategic importance. The new government in Kiev expressed fears of a wider invasion and the West responded by questioning Russia's membership in the Group of Eight leading industrialised democracies. The United States has threatened possible asset freezes and trade penalties. The Moscow Exchange fell about 10 percent in the first hour of trading on Monday, although it later recovered slightly. Nikita Bekasov, a spokesman for the Moscow Exchange, said the drop was the market's reaction to the Ukrainian developments. "The developments in Ukraine over the past weekend were expected, so the market has reacted to them," he said. "What we are seeing today is a noticeable weakening of the Russian currency against the American and European currencies, as well as a drop of stocks on the market." The Russian currency - the ruble - already down nearly 10 percent this year, fell below 50 to the euro for the first time. It was trading below 36.4 to the dollar, also a record. The Bank of Russia decided to temporarily increase the key rate by 1.5 percentage points to 7 percent in an attempt to keep the currency's fall from driving up inflation. The central bank will hold its next meeting on 14 March. Head of the National Bank on the Currency Crisis (Short)

01:18
"The Chairman of the National Bank of Ukraine says that they are doing their best to work with the market to find a stable exchange rate for its national currency, but since Ukraine currently has a war economy, it has been forced to take extraordinary steps to stabilize the hryvnia"
Ukrainian Experts Discuss European Integration

03:52
For more news visit ☛ http://english.ntdtv.com or Follow us on Twitter ☛ http://twitter.com/NTDTelevision Ukraine has long tried to become a member of the European Union. But as our correspondents in Kyiv report, that dream may not be so close. With a new president, Ukrainians can say they are living in an era of changes -- changes in government and a series of reforms. However, Ukraine's pro-European outlook remains unchanged. President Viktor Yanukovych continues to reiterate that becoming a member of the EU is a strategic goal for his government. And a plan to get rid of the visa requirements for the country's citizens brings Ukraine closer to this cherished dream. But experts say the country's latest developments are raising alarms. [Oleh Rybachuk, Leader of NGO "New Citizen"]: "Now there are serious obstacles in continuing this approach and there're real threats that if Ukraine carries on its policy, it has no chance to formalize the prospects for the EU -- not this year, not in the next few years." Ukraine's Prosecutor General opened a criminal case against the ex-Minister of Economy, Bohdan Danylyshyn. He was accused of causing the state losses of several million UAH. Later, the Czech Republic granted Danylyshyn asylum. According to experts, providing political asylum to Danylyshyn in the Czech Republic means that Europe believes there is no fair judicial system in Ukraine. The U.S. and Germany have already affirmed that Kyiv is using (quote) "selective justice" to intimidate the opposition. The same opinion was expressed by the EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy, Stefan Fule, when recently arriving in Ukraine. [Oleh Rybachuk, Leader of NGO "New Citizen"]: "Ukrainian authorities believe that when they're solving some economic questions, they can ignore values such as freedom and rule of law. The authorities have this mentality and think that the EU will support such a policy. It's the first time the authorities are faced with the fact that for the EU, rather than some formal laws or formal steps that have been adopted in Ukraine -- namely the observance of these things -- it is more important that the country must first be democratic and should have a rule of law; only then can one speak of further rapprochement." Yevhen Bystritsky is the executive director of the International Renaissance Foundation. [Yevhen Bystritsky, Exec. Director, International Renaissance Foundation]: "Ukraine's relations with the European Union, is not the relationship between president or prime minister or his deputy with the European functionaries. This is a communication of civil societies." Bystritsky believes in building a civil society in Ukraine and says the current government should pay more attention to the work of NGOs. [Yevhen Bystritsky, Exec. Director, International Renaissance Foundation]: "The government has to provide free facilities to public organizations, establish a dialogue with them, be open and talk about what the government wants to do in advance, and not provide a reform first and then say, 'let's discuss this.'" But contrary to pessimistic forecasts, according to some experts, Europe will limit itself to only warning Ukraine and will not apply any sanctions. [Gennady Druzenko, Parliamentary Cmte. for European Integration]: "Everything is seen in context. Ukraine in the context of Belarus and Russia is still a fairly democratic country and the EU will rather conduct a balanced policy of trying to keep this relatively democratic island, rather than using a stick and drive Ukraine into the Russian-Belarusian context." Kyiv hopes to sign the EU agreement on a plan of action to abolish visa requirements for Ukrainian citizens and on the free trade zone this year. But how realistic such plans are largely depends on whether Ukraine successfully moves forwards with issues of democracy. NTD News, Kyiv, Ukraine.

Ukraine's moribund economy hurting many

02:36
At a protest outside the Central Bank in Kyiv, with ordinary Ukrainians finding it punishingly difficult to pay for basic goods, they have been demonstrating against monetary policy. They blame the bank for the exchange rate of the hryvnia currency, plummeting in relation to the dollar and euro in the past few years. It has more than halved. One protester said: "It can't go on! Salaries haven't risen, pensions and wages are frozen and we have to pay for everything at the higher exchange rate.… READ MORE : http://www.euronews.com/2014/10/10/ukraine-s-moribund-economy-hurting-many What are the top stories today? Euro gains ground ahead of statement on stimulus

01:28
Yesterday's release of the Fed's recent meeting minutes impelled traders to sell off the buck on Forex. Thus, the euro strengthened its bullish trend. The quote of the most actively traded currency pair -- EUR/USD -- rose above 1 US dollar 38.60 cents. The European unit was also supported by the reports that the main subject of the G20 meeting is the political crisis in Ukraine. As we can notice the euro was very sensitive to the Ukrainian developments in February. Today, finance ministers and central bank governors from 20 major world economies will gather together in Washington. In addition to the discussion of political risks, policymakers will talk about structural reforms aimed at stimulating the global economy. It is obvious that a high exchange rate of the euro is harmful for the currency bloc's economy. The issue what measure the ECB is going to use is the main concern among experts. Speculations are boiling over whether it will be another bond buying program or negative rates. We will tell you about Mario Draghi decision in our next news releases. Don't miss it!

Economic Impact of the Crimea Crisis on Europe's Economy (Interview for Nova Makedonija)

04:55
Interview granted to Nova Makedonija on March 10, 2014 1. Russia is one of the main sources of energy (natural gas) for Europe and the Russian market is one of the biggest export markets for EU. Also, USA have exports in Russia and imports worth billions. Do you think NATO countries will risk their economic benefits by military action in Ukraine? SV: No, I don't. But not for economic reasons. The entire economy of Russia is equal merely to the economy of Italy. The Russian economy is also mainly oil- and minerals-based, not really industrial. Europe gets 31% of its energy needs from Russia. Germany has a dedicated Russian natural gas pipeline which doesn't cross Ukrainian territory, but the other members of the EU depend on safe transit of carbohydrates via Ukraine. Yet, these energy needs can be supplanted by natural gas from North Africa and even from the USA. Certain European financial institutions are exposed to Russian and Ukrainian loans, but their exposure is far from dangerous: $25 billion to Austrian banks (equal to 5.6% of their foreign portfolio), $34.5 billion to Italian banks (4.1%), and $52.4 billion to French banks (1.9%). 2. Do you think that NATO countries could block the trade arrangements with Russia? SV: Yes, they can and they will, if Putin doesn't back down. It is just about the only effective sanction they have on a state-to-state level. But these export arrangements benefit Russia much more than they benefit the EU. Similarly, the USA has a trade deficit with Russia (it imports twice as much as it exports). Only Russia stands to lose from such an eventual embargo. 3. Since the crisis began, the value of the Russian ruble fell 2,5 % against the dollar and 1,5 % against the euro to 50.30. Can you explain why the ruble is falling? SV: Mainly because Russians, oligarchs, and foreign investors are selling rubles to purchase foreign exchange (and then smuggle the proceeds out of the country). The central bank of Russia has had to buy $10 billion worth of rubles in a single day last week to protect the currency. It has also raised interest rates by 1.5% to render the ruble more attractive. 4. How will this affect the trade relations between the east and the west? SV: Nothing very serious. Russia is the world's largest energy and minerals producer. It cannot afford to not sell oil, natural gas, and extractive minerals to it customers because then its economy will crash. It manufactures little else that is exportable. It is a hostage to its own economic monoculture and addiction to oil's easy profits. 5. What does this mean when it comes to global currency battle? SV: If a real crisis erupts, the main beneficiaries will be the Asian currencies. Both the euro and the dollar will suffer mildly and then recover: the euro because of the short-term and limited economic European implications of an all-out conflict and the US dollar because of the US involvement in yet another destablising event. The USD used to be a "refuge currency" where people invest when geopolitics heats up. Now, it is merely the currency of a teetering empire on the brink which keeps getting involved in wars and conflicts, often of its own making.

Protest outside Ukraine's national bank over failure to stem depreciation of currency

01:46
Hundreds of people gathered in front of Ukraine's national bank on Tuesday to protest against the rapid depreciation of the national currency. The decline of Ukrainian hryvnia, one of the worst performing global currencies this year, has been compounded by economic problems caused in part by political instability and war with Russian-backed separatist forces in the east. People in the crowd shouted "Shame" and "Out with the thieves" in a rally dubbed the Financial Maidan, an echo of the Maidan revolution that led to the toppling of widely-reviled President Viktor Yanukovych in February. Many of the rally participants said their protest was motivated by soaring mortgage costs provoked by a national bank decision to increase the basic interest rate earlier this year. That move, ostensibly aimed at containing the devaluation of the hryvnia, has contributed further to inflation, which has already passed the 20 percent mark this year. Soaring prices for consumer goods are a knock-on effect of the weakened hryvnia, which has led to the increased cost of importing goods.
