Technology based entrepreneurship 👇

08:21
Technology based entrepreneurship is a vehicle that facilitates prosperity in individuals, firms, regions, and nations. The study of technology based entrepreneurship therefore, serves an important function beyond satisfying intellectual curiosity. In traditional forms of technology based entrepreneurship, the key decision of the entrepreneur was to select whether to aim for licensing their technology or engage in the full commercialization of their product (Gans & Stern, 2003). In contrast, digital technology entrepreneurs are embedded in an interconnected system when they aim to commercialize their solutions; it is a context where platforms and network effects matter (Kyprianou, 2016; Srinivasan et al., 2004) and standards or dominant designs (Brem et al., 2016) can define the boundaries and scalability of products. As a result, there are opportunities to update what we know about growth patterns in technology entrepreneurship (Hesse & Sternberg, 2016) to include digital technology entrepreneurs. Related research questions include: What are the implications of building a new venture on a digital artefact? What is different in resource acquisition, team dynamics, or funding strategies?   What are the implications of growth in digital technology entrepreneurship? How is it different from technology entrepreneurship or digital entrepreneurship? When does growth stop being a desirable outcome for entrepreneurs? How do valuation, user, and revenue growth translate into different entrepreneurship processes and perceptions of success? Further research could also study the co-evolution between digital technology entrepreneurship and the digital platforms or infrastructure governance (Wareham et al., 2014), as well as the impact of regulation (Gurses & Ozcan, 2015) to explore when this enables or constrains entrepreneurial activity. Related research questions include: How do platform dynamics impact entrepreneurial activity in emerging ecosystems? When does too much dynamism reduce the ecosystem attractiveness to new potential entrants? When does entrepreneurial activity generate new innovations, and when does it not? When do entrepreneurs engage in transforming the digital platforms where they operate? How does regulation by code and by law explain the different evolutionary paths in different markets? What strategies do entrepreneurs use to protect their positions in unstructured ecosystems? What is different in digital infrastructures? When do digital entrepreneurs use regulation to their advantage? To explore this and related research questions, researchers might take advantage of methods and theoretical perspectives from information systems’ research, where we have seen similar research fields’ interconnections in the last years between innovation and information systems (Majchrzak & Malhotra, 2013). Promising approaches include: Introducing heuristics theorizing to build design theories in entrepreneurship research (Gregory & Muntermann, 2014). Bringing multilevel perspectives (Shepherd, 2010) that capture the complexity of digital technology entrepreneurship, or different angles such as real options to understand how stakeholders see and make decisions in technology entrepreneurship (Rasmussen & Mathisen, 2016). Entrepreneurs The introduction of digital elements in the technology entrepreneurship process also reveals a bright side for entrepreneurs. For example, the digital aspects of the technology favour the adoption of born-global approaches (Kraus et al., 2017; Tanev, 2012). These firms can quickly scale up their products and aim for a global audience. Furthermore, the digitization of the production processes makes it possible to be both a lean and global company at the same time (Frederiksen & Brem, 2017; Rasmussen & Tanev, 2015), blurring the traditional boundaries of technology entrepreneurship. Activities in the entrepreneurship process, such as resource acquisition, are also changing; digital technologies offer the possibility to bring forth early working prototypes that can be used in reward crowdfunding campaigns, completely changing the technology innovation management process in the new firm (Giones & Oo, 2017). The first symposium on technology entrepreneurship was held at Purdue University in October 1970. This was the first time researchers gathered together to exchange findings and observations on this topic. This section examines the rapid progress in the volume and breadth of research into technology entrepreneurship since that first symposium in 1970. Google Scholar was used to identify published journal articles containing “technology” and “entrepreneurship” or “technical” and “entrepreneurship” in the title between January 1, 1970 and December 31, 2011. The search identified 93 articles published in 62 journals, which were then classified and examined more closely, as described in the sections that follow.

• May 9, 2014 @ 15:00 - 17:00 Wits Business School invites you to a lecture on Social Entrepreneurship: Creating social value in society and business by focusing on social finance, impact investing and social innovation policy to be delivered by Professor Alex Nicholls from Saïd Business School, Oxford University.  Professor Alex Nicholls MBA is the first tenured professor in social entrepreneurship appointed at the University of Oxford and was the first staff member of the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship in 2004. His research interests range across several key areas within social entrepreneurship and social innovation, including: the nexus of relationships between accounting, accountability, and governance; public and social policy contexts; social investment; and Fair Trade. To date Nicholls has published more than fifty papers, chapters and articles and four books. Most appear in a wide range of peer reviewed journals and books, including four sole authored papers in Financial Times Top 30 journals. His 2009 paper on social investment won the Best Paper Award (Entrepreneurship) at the British Academy of Management. In 2010, Nicholls edited a Special Edition of Entrepreneurship, Theory and Practice on social entrepreneurship -- the first time a top tier management journal had recognized the topic in this way. He is the General Editor of the Skoll Working Papers series and the Editor of the Journal of Social Entrepreneurship.                                                                                                                                                                                          Panellists: • Professor Imraan Valodia -          Dean: Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management, Wits UniversityMs Catherine Townshed -            Endeavor South Africa: Managing DirectorMr Pascal Fröhlicher       -            Impact Amplifier: PartnerMr Devang Vussonji       -             Dalberg - Global Development Advisors: Associate Partner  Moderator: • Professor Boris Urban: Chair in Entrepreneurship, Wits Business School. The panel discussion will focus on how businesses in emerging markets need to cultivate a social component around their business models which can shape their social values and outcomes. Social entrepreneurship has gained popularity under shifting market conditions and can be viewed as a process that catalyses social change and varies according to the socioeconomic, cultural and institutional environments. In South Africa, social entrepreneurship has unequivocal application where traditional government initiatives are unable to satisfy the entire social deficit, where an effort on the reduction in dependency on social welfare/grants is currently being instituted, and where the survival of many non-governmental organizations (NGO's) is at stake. Recognizing that a key issue confronting social entrepreneurs relates to the evaluation of outcomes, the panel discussion will hopefully facilitate a better understanding of the assessment of social initiatives. Date:     Friday, 9 May 2014 Time:     15:00-17:00 Venue:   Donald Gordon Auditorium, Wits Business School, 2 St. David's Place, St. Andrews Road, Parktown.

Co-sponsored with DEN and the Center for Private Equity and Entrepreneurship, Tuck School of Business Tuesday, October 4, 2016 5:00pm-6:00pm Filene Auditorium, Moore Building Entrepreneurial innovation is the lifeblood of growth, living standards, and dynamism. Aspirations for renewed economic vigor are really aspirations for continued innovation. But how does this happen? The lecture focuses on three questions: What is an “entrepreneur”? What ties entrepreneurship to economic growth? And what public policies best support entrepreneurial innovation? (Hint: Not the ones being debated in the 2016 campaign). Dean Hubbard will close with some observations on the special roles colleges and universities can play in the entrepreneurial process. Glenn Hubbard is dean and Russell L. Carson Professor of Finance and Economics at Columbia Business School. Hubbard received his BA and BS degrees summa cum laude from the University of Central Florida and also holds AM and PhD degrees in economics from Harvard University. In addition to writing more than 100 scholarly articles in economics and finance, Glenn is the author of three popular textbooks, as well as co-author of The Aid Trap: Hard Truths About Ending Poverty, Balance: The Economics of Great Powers From Ancient Rome to Modern America, and Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise: Five Steps to a Better Health Care System. Want to Write For Top Business Publications?

03:47
Get the full details at https://influencerinc.co/courses/power-publishing-contributor/ Do you want to become a contributor to publications like Forbes, Inc., and Entrepreneur? Hi, I’m Josh Steimle, and just a few short years ago, I was just your basic beleaguered, overwhelmed entrepreneur with a big vision and seemingly no way to achieve it. It was hard to get any press at all, let alone the agonizing, all-uphill battle I faced just getting my first article published in Fast Company so I could get a measly ‘as featured on’ logo on my website. How would I ever get any traction? I didn’t even know what I didn’t know! Doesn’t it drive you crazy? I knew the insights and lessons I’d learned in the school of hard knocks would benefit the business and personal lives of real people–yet for 11 humiliating years my ‘big ideas’ had only one outlet: a personal blog with a mere pittance of a following. Then there’s the business component: the real services, real deliverables I had to offer, that should have been helping more people put their problems to bed and move on with happier, more productive lives. I just didn’t know how to get my message ‘out there’ consistently–that is, at least, until I attracted the attention of an editor at Forbes. And because my work happened to be right where he wanted his publication to go next, I found myself, quite by accident, in a coveted spot as a Forbes contributor. Within a few months, I’d learned how to write articles that drove business without even promoting myself (by sharing solutions I’d discovered to the problems I was facing on the cutting edge of my own work), and my whole world changed almost overnight: The articles I wrote for Forbes led to my writing for more than 20 other high-profile publications like Fortune, Time, Mashable, TechCrunch, and Entrepreneur–and those articles have brought my business more than $5,000,000 (and counting), just over the last 4 years; - A cash advance on a book deal with a big publishing house, giving me new levels of instant credibility and opening up opportunities I’d never even imagined; and… - High-paying speaking gigs in exotic locations around the world, sharing my ideas in front of audiences of thousands, which allowed me to share my message on the scale it deserved and sustainably fuel even more ambitious projects (in my case, breaking down communication and marketing barriers between the West and China). When I started getting calls from executives, entrepreneurs, and venture capitalists asking me to help them reproduce my successes, I’ll confess I jumped at the opportunity. But my own background also opened my eyes to a broader truth: What what the world needs is for more ‘real’ people with world-changing ideas to have access to these tools–not just those with some ‘elite’ status. Thus I set out to make these behind-the-curtain secrets available to the real world-changers–guys and gals just like me and you. Want to know more? Check out the masterclass details at https://influencerinc.co/courses/power-publishing-contributor/. But hurry, because there are only 20 spots and they're going fast!

Kalyan Handique | My Entrepreneurial Journey

40:26
You are invited to join the University of Michigan Department of Chemical Engineering at the fourth annual Chemical Engineering Graduate Symposium, where we will highlight and celebrate the research of current graduate students through both oral and poster presentations. For this year's keynote address Dr. Kalyan Handique will discuss his career path of starting a medical device startup company during the final stages of his Ph.D., growing and exiting the company; a brief stint at a very large company and going back to the exciting life of another startup. Dr. Handique will try to highlight the key differences between working at a startup vs. a big company, the extreme learning you would expect at an early startup as well as point out the work-life balancing issues you would expect at a startup. Biography: Dr. Kalyan Handique is currently the President and Chief Executive Officer of DeNovo Sciences, Inc. DeNovo Sciences is bringing cutting-edge circulating tumor cell detection technology to the cancer research and clinical markets. Kalyan co-founded HandyLab, a start-up molecular diagnostic company, in 2000 while earning his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at the University of Michigan. He played a pivotal role in forming the vision and the core technical team for HandyLab, as well as in conceiving the positive, vibrant culture of the company. He served as the company's CTO and board member. Under his leadership, the highly motivated HandyLab team successfully launched a series of integrated molecular diagnostic products in the hospital testing market. In 2009, Becton Dickinson (BD) Diagnostic systems acquired HandyLab in a landmark deal valued at more than $275 million. Kalyan briefly served as the Vice President of R&D Systems Development at BD. In addition, Kalyan serves as a board of director of other life sciences startups such as 3D Biomatrix and PhasiQ and as an advisor to seed-stage venture funds such as Zell Lurie Commercialization Fund and Augment Ventures. Kalyan is also the author of numerous journal articles in prestigious publications such as Science, and is a prolific inventor with more than 70 patents and patent applications to his credit.
The Digital Entrepreneur

04:24
Dr. Ayman El Tarabishy Ayman is currently a visiting professor at the George Washington University's School of Business, and is also the Executive Director of the International Council for Small Business (ICSB), a coalition of more than a dozen national organizations across the globe devoted to advancing small business research and practices. Ayman's current research is in entrepreneurial leadership. He has presented his work at national and international conferences and has published research articles in the Journal of Private Equity, the Southern Business Review, and the International Journal of Entrepreneurship Education. Ayman has written a White Paper entitled 'Keeping the Entrepreneurial Spirit Alive in the Family Business - Introducing the idea of the Digital Entrepreneur'. Entrepreneurship requires innovation as well, and that means revolution (what Schumpeter called "creative destruction"). Quality improvement must be combined with qualitative change, and the latter often calls for increased rather than decreased variability, in order to create new (innovative) and better products and processes. The digital entrepreneur not only provides products or services that meet the needs of customers and clients, but the digital entrepreneur adds value in a social/societal sense. This White Paper has been posted by The Network of Family Businesses. Ayman's seminar will be presented on July 15th at 11:00 AM.

Women’s Entrepreneurship Symposium 2016 – Panel “My Entrepreneurial Journey: Lessons Learned”

41:25
Women’s Entrepreneurship Symposium 2016 was held on April 1st by the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Center, at the University Auditorium. More than 300 members of the UF community shared in the journeys of some of UF’s most successful alumna entrepreneurs at the Women’s Entrepreneurship Symposium on April 1. Panel “My Entrepreneurial Journey: Lessons Learned” Allison Adams, founder, Oxford Exchange Kim Kaupe, co-founder, ZinePak Anne Stokes, founder, Search Moderator, Dr. Joyce Bono, Dept. of Management, Univ. of Florida Allison Adams – Co-founder, Oxford Exchange Allison Adams is the Co-founder and Director of Oxford Exchange, an English inspired restaurant, bookstore, boutique, coffee house and gathering space. Oxford Exchange was born of an idea of her brother, Blake Casper, who spent four years living in London. As business partners and third-generation owner-operators of McDonald’s restaurants, Allison and Blake wanted to create a social gathering place for the community – a place that Tampa could call their own. Together, they opened the Oxford Exchange in a downtown Tampa space that was originally built in 1891 as a stable for the Plant Hotel. Their location has expanded to 24,000 square feet. Every aspect of the venue was carefully planned to create a unique experience and a community among their customers. The items in the gift shop and bookstore are carefully curated, the food in the restaurant is made with fresh ingredients by a local chef, and the coffeehouse and tea shop are run by local partners, Buddy Brew Coffee and TeBella Tea Company. Allison holds a JD from Southern Methodist University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration in Marketing from the University of Florida. Anne Stokes, Ph.D – Founder, SEARCH At age 5, Anne Stokes announced her decision to be an archaeologist to the dismay of her parents, who wanted her to someday be able to get a real job. They did not see how one can make money from a field like archaeology. She earned her PhD from the University of Florida specializing in Caribbean Archaeology. She also founded SEARCH. Inc. in 1993, and it has emerged as a leading provider of cultural resources services to government and commercial customers. Her company has handled over 2,500 archaeologist projects in the United States and territories and in 17 other countries. SEARCH employs over 100 professionals in 15 offices and an 11,000 square-foot curation facility. Anne has extensive experience with cultural resources legislation, including the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and is a certified expert witness. Dr. Stokes has been recognized as 2008 Small Business Person of the Year by The Small Business Administration, North Florida and as a Woman Who Means Business by the Orlando Business Journal. She is listed on the Register of Professional Archaeologists and is on the University of Florida’s Anthropology Development Board. Dr. Joyce Bono – Dept. of Management, Univ. of Florida Joyce E. Bono is a Professor of Management at the University of Florida’s Warrington College of Business. She has a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from the University of Iowa (2001). Her research interests include leadership, personality, motivation, job attitudes and emotions, the advancement of women leaders, and the effects of managers on employees’ quality of work life. She has published more than 30 articles on these and related topics journals such as the Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, Leadership Quarterly, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, and Psychological Bulletin. She teaches graduate level courses on ‘Leadership’, ‘Motivation and Attitudes’, and ‘Organizational Behavior’. Professor Bono is currently an Associate Editor for the Academy of Management Journal. Kim Kaupe – Co-Founder, ZinePak Kim Kaupe is the co-founder of ZinePak, a custom publication company that creates engaging fan packages for entertainers, brands, and celebrities. Since starting the company in January 2011 with co-founder Brittany Hodak, ZinePak has grown into a team of 10 powerhouse ladies churning out packages for A-list entertainers such as Taylor Swift, KISS, Katy Perry, Mumford & Sons and The Beach Boys. The Job of Being an Entrepreneur

04:13
http://theyec.org Being an entrepreneur is a way of life more than a "job." The hardest part for Kathryn Minshew of The Muse is in dealing with uncertainty. You also have to make decisions on things you don't necessarily have the "right" answer for. Watch to find out what the "easy" parts of being an entrepreneur are. Q. What are the hardest and easiest parts about your job and about being an entrepreneur? --- Sign up for #StartupLab mentorship - http://myStartupLab.com/go YEC on Twitter: http://twitter.com/theyec YEC on Facebook: http://facebook.com/theYEC Learn More About Our Speaker Kathryn Minshew had to do some globe-hopping and career-hopping before ending up at her destination: as the founder and CEO of The Muse. "For a while I thought there was something wrong with me, like I was on this crazy quest to find a career I was interested in," Kathryn told The Grindstone. This quest took Kathryn to internships in the U.N. and the U.S. State Department, to Rwanda and Malawi to introduce vaccines with the Clinton Health Access Initiative, and even to management consultancy work at McKinsey & Company. But like Goldilocks, finding the career path that was just right took some time. In 2011, Kathryn left the relative safety and stability of these traditional jobs to co-found The Daily Muse, a website and career destination focused on professional women. Soon, The Daily Muse led to The Muse, a site helping professionals find and excel at their jobs. But the path to success was far from smooth, especially in the male-dominated tech industry. Kathryn found herself in meetings where investors referred to the company as a "cute lifestyle business" or assumed she would be easily dissuaded because of her gender. At networking events, she was often assumed to be someone's plus-one instead of a company CEO. "I am the most determined person you will ever meet and every time someone says 'but you're so smart for a girl' or something else ridiculous, I get that much more focused," Kathryn told Ad:Tech Digital Digest. This determination paid off, as The Muse now serves more than four million professionals worldwide. And that "cute lifestyle" site, The Daily Muse? Its readership is now 30 percent male. Today, Kathryn is widely regarded as a thought leader, contributing writing to outlets such as The Wall Street Journal and Harvard Business Review. She's a frequent professional speaker and has made television appearances on CNN and Fox. Kathryn might have career-hopped early in her professional life, but she has certainly stuck the landing. She's been named to Forbes' 30 Under 30 for two years running and was named one of Inc.'s 15 Women to Watch in Tech What is #StartupLab? #StartupLab is a free virtual mentorship program created by The Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC), an invite-only organization comprised of hundreds of America's most successful young entrepreneurs. #StartupLab takes YEC's mission to help more people start successful businesses to the next level by offering millions of entrepreneurs direct access to YEC members through interactive video chats, email lessons and a library of how-to articles, videos and eBooks. "eShip Talks" conference : interview DIMO DIMOV - Professor of Entrepreneurship -

05:01
Dimo Dimov is professor of Entrepreneurship and Director of Doctoral Programmes at Newcastle University Business School. He made a presentation at EMLYON Business School on march 2012 about the role of chance events in entrepreneurial opportunity developments. According to Dimo Dimov, who published numerous essays and articles on this theme, the occurrence of chance events has two components: the occurrence of an event, i.e. the encounter with new information, and the perceived meaningfulness of such information as it engages the entrepreneurs' attention and triggers insight or deciding.

It’s not you, it’s my hormones Testosterone Influences | Lisa Welling | TEDxOaklandUniversity

16:25
My research finds that increases in testosterone is associated with increased preferences for sexually dimorphic (i.e., masculinity in males and femininity in females) characteristics and changes in self-perception. Specifically, research shows that testosterone influences perceptions by increasing preferences for masculine men and feminine women, and influencing men's perceptions of their own dominance. This research demonstrates that, far from being arbitrary, our preferences and perceptions are at least in part governed by biological processes and that beauty is not just in the eye of the beholder. Dr. Lisa Welling is an Assistant Professor at Oakland University. Her Ph.D., entitled Individual Differences in Face Preferences, was completed in 2008 and was funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. Grounded in evolutionary reasoning, Dr. Welling’s research generally surrounds three related areas: hormonal influences on behavior, sources of adaptive mate preferences, and interpersonal relationships. In addition to having co-edited a book entitled Evolutionary Perspectives on Social Psychology, Dr. Welling has published five book chapters and more than fifty scientific journal articles. Her research has been featured in the media multiple times on programs including lthe Oprah Winfrey Show and the Discovery Channel documentary Curiosity. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

John Carreyrou, "Bad Blood"

01:10:50
John Carreyrou discusses his book , "Bad Blood", about Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos at Politics and Prose on 6/20/18. Theranos, founded in 2003 by nineteen-year-old wunderkind Elizabeth Holmes, promised to revolutionize blood testing by developing technologies to miniaturize samples and so make testing fast, easy, and inexpensive. It seemed too good to be true—and was, as Carreyrou, a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning Wall Street Journal reporter, revealed in a series of detailed articles. Undaunted by pressure from the company’s CEO and lawyers, Carreyrou raised enough doubts about Theranos policies, procedures, and promises that by 2015 Holmes and her corporation were being investigated by a host of medical authorities, investors, state attorneys general, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and others. Here Carreyrou recounts his riveting story of the biggest corporate fraud since Enron. https://www.politics-prose.com/book/9781524731656 Founded by Carla Cohen and Barbara Meade in 1984, Politics and Prose Bookstore is Washington, D.C.'s premier independent bookstore and cultural hub, a gathering place for people interested in reading and discussing books.
