DNS Records
In order to find resources on the network, computers need a system to look up the location of resources. Check out http://YouTube.com/ITFreeTraining or http://itfreetraining.com for more of our always free training videos. This video looks at the DNS records that contain information about resources and services on the network. The client can request these records from a DNS server in order to locate resources like web sites, Active Directory Domains and Mail Servers just to name a few. http://ITFreeTraining.com/handouts/dn... In this video This video will look at the following DNS records: Host (A and AAAA): Contains IP Addresses for IPv4 and IPv6 hosts Alias (CNAME): Works just like a shortcut for files except for DNS records. Mail Exchange (MX): Holds the address of mail servers for that domain. Service Record (SRV): Holds the address of services on the network. E.g. Active Directory DC's. Start of Authority (SOA): Contains information and configuration for a zone file. Name Server (NS): Contain the address of other DNS servers for that zone. Pointer (PTR): Reverse look up record allowing a hostname for an IP Address to be look up. Host (A and AAAA) The host record is used to store the address of a hostname. "A" is used for IPv4 and AAAA (Quad A) for IPv6. These can be created manually in DNS or if dynamic DNS is enabled and the client can register its hostname and thus its IP Address with the DNS server. Alias (CName) A canonical name or CName record provides an alias service in DNS. A CName effectively points to another A or Quad A record. When the client requests the hostname that is contained in the CName, they are given the IP Address that is contained in the A record or Quad A record. The advantage of a CName is that it can provide a simple name to the user rather than a more complex server name. For example, instead of having to remember FS27 for the local file server, a CName of FS could be used to point towards the server FS27. CName's can also be used to transparently redirect network traffic. For example, if you changed you mind and wanted to redirect the user to FS28 you would only need to change the CName record to point to FS28 rather than FS27. It should be remembered that the old record may exist in the client cache and may take some time to expire. Mail Exchange (MX) The mail exchange record contains a mail server that is able to process mail for that domain name. When a mail server wants to deliver mail, it will perform a DNS lookup asking the DNS server for an MX record for that DNS Domain name. The mail server will then attempt to deliver mail to that server. The mail server does not need to have the same DNS name as the mail that is being delivered, it simply needs to understand how to process mail for that DNS domain name. The MX record also has priority value that can be configured. If two or more MX Exchange records exist for the same DNS Doman name, the MX record with the lowest priority will be tried first. If this fails, the MX record with the next lowest value will be tried until the mail is delivered. Often large companies will have multiple mail severs for incoming mail. In some cases, these additional mail servers may be located on different sides of the globe in case there is a long network outage. Service Record (SRV) Service records allow clients on the network to find resources on the network. Active Directory creates a number of service records in DNS to allow clients to find resources like Domain Controllers. This is why Active Directory cannot operate without DNS. A single service record has a number of data fields associated with it. These include, service, target, port and priority. Service records are normally created automatically by applications assuming that your DNS server allows dynamic updates. Start of Authority (SOA) There is one start of authority record (SOA) for each zone. Even though the SOA is technically a DNS record, essentially modification of the SOA record is performed through the properties of the DNS zone. Looking at the data in the SOA record, you can configure options for the zone like the primary name server for that zone (DNS servers that hold the master records for the zone), the e-mail address of an administrator, serial number (Incremented each time a change is made in the DNS zone) and the refresh time for the zone (How often a secondary zone should query a master for changes). Windows Server 2008: create dns records
This video also works on Server 2003. We so frequently install DNS with Active Directory, we forget that it is a full featured service on its own. This video is just one aspect of many features available from Windows DNS. This how-to video on Microsoft Windows Server 2008 domain name service (DNS) shows how to manually create DNS records. The types of records are A and AAAA records for normal lookups in a IPv4 or IPv6 environment. (Glue record) PTR records for a reverse lookup zone. This is the opposite of DNS. It's IP Address mapping to DNS name. MX records for mail exchanger CNAME for canonical name records. These resolve one name to another name. It's like a nickname for machines. NS records to specify other name servers. SOA records to identify the server in charge of the domain. Providing training videos since last Tuesday. http://www.technoblogical.com Thanks for watching.

How to troubleshoot and fix Active Directory replication issues on Windows Server 2012 R2
Support NLB Solutions - https://www.patreon.com/NLBSolutions In this video I am going to show you an issue with my Active Directory replication between my two DCs and how I managed to resolve it. Tips and tricks for demoting a DC: 1. Always try graceful removal 1st, if you are not able to gracefully remove the DC proceed with Force Removal. 2. If you are performing a Forceful removal disconnect your DC in order to prevent corruption on your working DC. 3. Perform matadata cleanup from AD Users and Computers, DNS and AD Sites and Services when possible. If not you can proceed with ntdsutil /metadatacleanup. 4. After promotion leave the DCs to "talk" to each other in order to replicate all AD info.

Zimbra 8.7 on CentOS 7 - Install And Configure Local DNS
Setting up Zimbra 8.7 on CentOS 7. This is a simple tutorial on how to install Zimbra 8.7 on CentOS 7.2. In this video, a local DNS is setup so we can resolve immediately. Please follow the procedures. 1: Edit your host file vi /etc/hosts and make sure that you have FQDN entry in it (e.g. mail.zimbracentos.lan zimbracentos.lan) 2: Install BIND as our DNS by running yum -y install bind bind-utils 3: Run vi /etc/named.conf to edit the configuration file. 4: Add forward and reverse zones. Here, I added a forward zone "zimbracentos.lan" with a file name "zimbracentos.zone". It is highly recommended to create a reverse zone especially on email. This will be used by recipient MTA in the future to verify that your FQDN is really set to a particular IP. Here, I created a reverse zone with a file name called "zimbracentos.rev". Files for forward zone and reverse zone are located under /var/named folder. 5: Run cd /var/named and copy the named.empty file by running cp named.empty zimbracentos.zone. You can create an empty file for your zone file, I just used the named.empty as a template for my zone file. 6: Run vi zimbracentos.zone to edit the file. Here I created NS, A and MX records. We will discuss these records on another video but for now just follow the procedures. 7: Create a reverse file by running the command cp named.loopback zimbracentos.rev. 8: Edit the file vi zimbracentos.rev. I just created 3 records, NS, A and the PTR. This will assign the IP Address that ends with .32 to "mail.zimbracentos.lan" 9: Change the group ownership of the two files, "zimbracentos.lan" and "zimbracentos.rev" to named. Run the command "chgrp named zimbracentos.zone" and "chgrp named zimbracentos.rev". Failure to change the group ownership will result to an error when you run the named service. 10: If you noticed, when I tried to start the DNS by calling the named service, I got an error message. This is because there was an extra "@" sign before the SOA. Just delete it to get rid of the error message. 11: You can run the following commands to check your config and zone files. "named-checkconf -z /etc/named.conf" = This will check your conf file for possible error. This will also show if you have error on your zone file. "named-checkzone zonefilename.zone /var/named/zonefilename.zone" = This will check error on the zone file. 12: IMPORTANT!!: Make sure that your resolv.conf file is resolving to the localhost. You can edit "vi /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0" and add and entry "DNS1=" and "DNS2=". This will resolv to the local DNS first before going out to the google DNS. 13: Run the following commands to verify that your FQDN is pointing to the right IP Address, your domain name is pointing to your FQDN and your IP Address is pointing to the FQDN (reverse) "nslookup (Your server's IP Address)" - should point the IP Address to your FQDN "nslookup (FQDN e.g. mail.zimbracentos.lan)" - should point your FQDN to the IP Address "nslookup -query=(mx domain name e.g. zimbracentos.lan)" - should point your domain name to your FQDN. On the next video, we will install Zimbra on the server. Since we are using a local DNS already, we will not use the dns-cache package of Zimbra. Don't forget to subscribe for future updates.

DAG failover Scenario - Mailscape - Exchange Server Monitoring Software
In this scenario, the DAG has had a switch over or fail over and the database is now on the wrong node. A DAG failover can cause performance issues especially in virtualized environments where one physical server is hosting several databases and there may not be sufficient CPU ram and other resources to run multiple active databases for extended periods of time. In this demonstration we will look at how Mailscape proactively tests every component of a DAG, or Database Available Group, in Exchange 2010 and 2013 to make sure they are functioning properly. A DAG failover does not always indicate a serious problem in and of itself, but it is one that you want to know about ASAP so you can deal with it and make sure it does not become a much bigger problem leading to an outage. Windows Server 2008: dns start of authority tab
This video also works on Server 2003. We so frequently install DNS with Active Directory, we forget that it is a full featured service on its own. This video is on the DNS start of authority (SOA) tab in the DNS console. The features shown here are... Serial number: This is a version number of the zone: When servers check for updates this is the number they check. If the secondary's serial number is lower than the primary's serial number they begin a zone transfer. You can force replication by incrementing the number. Start of authority: the server that runs the domain Responsible person: receives messages about the domain Refresh interval: the frequency that secondary servers are to look for changes in the domain. Retry interval: Should a zone transfer fail, they must wait this amount of time to retry the transfer. Minimum TTL: This is the minimum time to live for records. This means that records given out are good for at least this long. TTL for this record: How long the records are good for. After this amount of time, records must be deleted. just one aspect of many features available from Windows DNS. This how-to video on Microsoft Windows Server 2008 domain name service (DNS), shows the start of authority tab in the DNS console. The features explained in are Serial number: It's like a version number of the the DNS zone. It specifies when changes have been made. If another server contacts the start of authority (SOA), and the secondary server has a lower number than the current number, it starts a zone transfer (update). Can be used to force zone transfers. Primary Server: This shows which server is the SOA in charge of the domain. Responsible Person: Receives messages about the domain. Refresh interval: How often servers should check in and update their records Retry interval: If a zone transfer fails, the server must wait this amount of time before requesting a new zone transfer. DEF CON 24 - Frontrunning The Frontrunners
Dr. Paul VixieCEO and Co-founder, Farsight Security, Inc. -While some domainers allegedly brainstorm ideas for new domains to register while taking a shower, the more successful domain portfolio managers, working at scale, are believed to be ‘data driven.’ DNS queries are a material source of intelligence about domainer opportunities and operations, and also help us to understand the operational constraints around potentially combating domainers, should we want to do so. In this presentation co-authored with Farsight Security Scientist Dr. Joe St Sauver, Farsight Security CEO Dr. Paul Vixie will scrutinize failed DNS queries (‘NXDOMAINs’), looking for the same ‘opportunities’ that a domainer or typo squatter would (although we will not be acting on that data by actually registering domains). Dr. Vixie will discuss two primary types of behavior: 1) Volumetrically-driven typo-squatting, which Dr. Vixie will measure by computing the volume of NXDOMAINs seen by domain during a 24 hour period, and the time between popular typos appearing in NXDOMAINs and those same domains being registered and actually used, and 2) Domainers programmatically exploring permutations of domains around high value domains, probing for available domains and automatically registering the most promising probed domains discovered to still be available. Both of these hypothesized behaviors should be externally observable and thus able to be confirmed by watching a real-time stream of NXDOMAIN errors, and a real-time stream of newly observed, actually-registered domains, as available from the Security Information Exchange. Dr. Paul Vixie will experimentally confirm these hypothesized relationships and describe examples of (1) the most commonly observed types of typographical errors, (2) the brands apparently most-targeted for squatting, (3) the distribution of delays from NXDOMAIN detection to observed domain use, (4) the potential relationship between NXDOMAIN volume thresholds and TLD cost. Dr. Vixie will also explain how this information illuminates opportunities for tackling these types of domain name abuse. Time will be reserved for Q&A. Dr. Paul Vixie is the CEO and Co-founder of Farsight Security. He previously served as President, Chairman and Founder of Internet Systems Consortium (ISC), as President of MAPS, PAIX and MIBH, as CTO of Abovenet/MFN, and on the boards of several for-profit and non-profit companies. He served on the ARIN Board of Trustees from 2005 to 2013, as ARIN Chairman in 2008 and 2009, and was a founding member of ICANN Root Server System Advisory Committee (RSSAC) and ICANN Security and Stability Advisory Committee (SSAC). He operated the ISC's F-Root name server for many years, and is a member of Cogent's C-Root team. He is a sysadmin for Op-Sec-Trust. Dr. Vixie has been contributing to Internet protocols and UNIX systems as a protocol designer and software architect since 1980. He wrote Cron (for BSD and Linux), and is considered the primary author and technical architect of BIND 4.9 and BIND 8, and he hired many of the people who wrote BIND 9. He has authored or co-authored a dozen or so RFCs, mostly on DNS and related topics, and of Sendmail: Theory and Practice (Digital Press, 1994). His technical contributions include DNS Response Rate Limiting (RRL), DNS Response Policy Zones (RPZ), and Network Telemetry Capture (NCAP). He earned his Ph.D. from Keio University for work related to DNS and DNSSEC, and was named to the Internet Hall of Fame in 2014. Twitter: @paulvixie LinkedIn

F5 DNS Express: DNS Die Another Day
DNS is one of the key elements in the network that delivers content and applications to the user. However, DNS also manages a distributed and redundant architecture to ensure high availability and quality user response time. Due to the crucial role it plays in a network, DNS is also a high-value security target. Security attacks can flood DNS servers to the point of failure. To prevent this, a high-performing, secure DNS architecture and DNS offload capabilities must be integrated into the network. DNS Express manages authoritative DNS queries by transferring zones to its own RAM. In this architecture, F5 DNS Services only has to open the DNS query packet once, as long as the request is for an address that is in the zone that was transferred to DNS Express. DNS Express simplifies a single processing instance of the DNS query to significantly improve the performance of F5 DNS Services. With DNS Express, each individual core of each BIG-IP device can answer approximately 125,000 to 200,000 requests per second.

MX Record Lookup for Failed Email Delivery in Google Apps
This videos is brought to you by Cloud Sherpas As a Google Apps Administrator, your users may frequently come to you asking why an email has not been delivered. There's a number of ways to decipher the issue, but the first thing you should do is an MX record lookup. After opening the command prompt, you'll need to use the nslookup command to see if there is an issue with the domain your user is trying to contact. Depending on the bounceback your user received, that server may be the issue, or it may be something else entirely.

Server 2016 And 2012 R2 - Reverse DNS Zone Creation
Server 2016 And 2012 R2 - Reverse DNS Zone Creation We use our DNS servers for changing domain names into IP addresses. Sometimes we might want to go from IP addresses to domain names. This video shows how to create a reverse DNS zone so that we are able to change IP addresses to domain names. For more visit: http://www.windows10.ninja http://www.2012r2.com Transcript (machine generated so it contains errors) Hello today to you in today's video will have a look at how to set up a reverse lookup sound and DNS. Basically what this is is when we type in name power shall carelessness, eczema, shall we say we Wanna find the IP address staff, a company DNS have all surpassed by us giving Google.com and it turns it into an IP address and reverse look up is the exact opposite. We type in an IP address and we want the DNS server to basically give us back the name of that domain okay as an example, let's have a quick look over here. Okay then S look up okay and then set type equals pointer okay and now we have a server server 005 or even this case 006 has an IP address. Okay, so let's just type in 192.16 8.0 .30 okay, now if we had a reverse look up, set up, it would come back and say its call services are six now, that's not there, so we need to go into DNS manager who do that we open up server manager in the server to the 16 it's click over there. Click over there and then click on that okay in server 2012. The words via start screen or in ways that so we now have this and then this opens up like that. Click on DNS, right click over there DNS manager then basically select the server that you have lots of the different here are those with setup for our demo environment. Okay, so basically now reverse lookup zones, user very simple. Next, make as a primary zone perfect okay secondary zone is like a copy zone, a backup zone stub zone the alligator cheaper version of a copy again next okay. See how you wander zone dinner replicated. Basically, this is a nice idea.the default of the year is quite good. Okay, next okay, each with an IP version 46. In this catering for now. What we do is we type in the first three okay first three bytes 19248168.0 okay, and they will be able to resolve all the others okay. Click next okay only secure updates that is ideal as this active directory and where widely secure. Now that's happily set up okay okay, now we can type in the address that we had before. Handmade finds it okay. Sometimes it may not be instantaneous because this is a start, slowly building up all a pointers okay arms. So basically it. My require and restart a refresh or reload you now refreshes over there reloads over there okay and basically on our servers when they join up to the domain when they login it starts building up so over time. It started populated. Alternatively, if you want you can create pointers okay, it's B31 okay then in the hostname is server 205 okay. Do not take that one. Okay, it's not necessarily down to get assessed okay and they get paid servers. There is a five year given the full name like that, but soldiers are five days, from okay arm hopefully does help. Thanks for watching
