Foreign Direct Investment Definition | Definition of Foreign Direct Investment

22:22
Foreign Direct Investment Definition | Definition of Foreign Direct Investment: hedge foreign direct investment ; definition of foreign direct investment; meaning of foreign direct investment: A foreign direct investment (FDI) is an investment in the form of a controlling ownership in a business in one country by an entity based in another country. It is thus distinguished from foreign portfolio investment by a notion of direct control. The origin of the investment does not impact the definition as an FDI: the investment may be made either "inorganically" by buying a company in the target country or "organically" by expanding operations of an existing business in that country. Definition: Broadly, foreign direct investment includes "mergers and acquisitions, building new facilities, reinvesting profits earned from overseas operations and intra company loans". In a narrow sense, foreign direct investment refers just to building new facility, a lasting management interest (10 percent or more of voting stock) in an enterprise operating in an economy other than that of the investor. FDI is the sum of equity capital, other long-term capital, and short-term capital as shown the balance of payments. FDI usually involves participation in management, joint-venture, transfer of technology and expertise. Stock of FDI is the net (i.e., outward FDI minus inward FDI) cumulative FDI for any given period. Direct investment excludes investment through purchase of shares. FDI is one example of international factor movements. A foreign direct investment (FDI) is a controlling ownership in a business enterprise in one country by an entity based in another country. Foreign direct investment is distinguished from foreign portfolio investment, a passive investment in the securities of another country such as public stocks and bonds, by the element of "control". According to the Financial Times, "Standard definitions of control use the internationally agreed 10 percent threshold of voting shares, but this is a grey area as often a smaller block of shares will give control in widely held companies. Moreover, control of technology, management, even crucial inputs can confer de facto control." According to Grazia Ietto-Gillies (2012), prior to Stephen Hymer’s theory regarding direct investment in the 1960s, the reasons behind Foreign Direct Investment and Multinational Corporations were explained by neoclassical economics based on macro economic principles. These theories were based on the classical theory of trade in which the motive behind trade was a result of the difference in the costs of production of goods between two countries, focusing on the low cost of production as a motive for a firm’s foreign activity. For example, Joe S. Bain only explained the internationalization challenge through three main principles: absolute cost advantages, product differentiation advantages and economies of scale. Furthermore, the neoclassical theories were created under the assumption of the existence of perfect competition. Intrigued by the motivations behind large foreign investments made by corporations from the United States of America, Hymer developed a framework that went beyond the existing theories, explaining why this phenomenon occurred, since he considered that the previously mentioned theories could not explain foreign investment and its motivations. ............................................................................. According to the annual World Investment Report by the UN Conference on Trade and Development,... foreign direct investment flows rose 38 percent in 2015 from the year before... to one-point-seven-six trillion U.S. dollars. Asia was the number one destination for foreign investment, followed by Europe and North America. Mergers and acquisitions were the key driver, which increased sixty-six percent in 2015 from the previous year. However,... the report also said foreign investment will likely drop by between ten percent and 15 percent this year due to growing global economic uncertainties and slowing global trade. Wake Up Canada - You’re Losing Big Time - Kevin O’Leary

04:33
According to Stats Can, net foreign direct investment (FDI) in Canada fell 37% in 2017 from the previous year. Total net FDI outflows from Canada jumped 2% in 2017, with the majority of that capital going to the U.S. “The thing about money is that it has no political affiliation. It doesn’t care. It looks to the path of least resistance, and that path is no longer in Canada,” chairman of O’Shares ETFs, Kevin O’Leary told Kitco News on the sidelines of the “Three Sharks In A Castle” symposium. “If you’re doing a large project, you’re not doing it in Canada anymore; it’s not the place to invest.” According to the Shark Tank investor, the Canadian corporate sector has lost its competitive edge since President Donald Trump’s tax cuts have reduced U.S. corporate tax rates to 21%. _________________________________________________________________ Kitco News is the world’s #1 source of metals market information. U.S. foreign direct investment likely to fall to US $386 bil. this year: IIF

00:54
올해 미국 외국직접투자 금융 위기 후 최저 U.S. foreign direct investment to emerging markets... like South Korea... is likely to drop below three-hundred-90 billion U.S. dollars this year... curbed in part by the Trump administration's protectionist trade policies. The Institute of International Finance... a group representing hundreds of the world's biggest banks, hedge funds and other financial firms... says U.S. FDI would be down nearly 30 percent from just three years ago... and the weakest level since the 2008 global financial crisis. The institute suggested that it would be another dismal year of capital flows and economic growth for industrializing nations due to China's economic slowdown and a plunge in commodity prices. The institute said countries like South Korea, China and Mexico that are most exposed to the U.S. are the most vulnerable. The tariff data includes MFN tariffs as well as multilateral, regional and bilateral preferences and covers ad valorem equivalents of specific tariffs, tariff quotas and anti-dumping duties. Tariff and trade data are available for merchandise goods (not services) at the 6-digit level of the Harmonised System for about 5,000 product items. Information on foreign direct investment (FDI) is available on goods and services for up to 150 sectors.
