The Signal Orchestration System (SOS) augments the physical environment with digital signals indicating orchestration aspects. It includes a manager, where orchestration visual and auditory signals are configured, changed on the fly and transmitted. These signals are rendered in physical devices that students can easily wear in a way that the signals can be collectively perceived (by the rest of the students in a group). This facilitates awareness of the social dynamic and the activity flow. For instance, to indicate group formation, students' devices can show color signals. The students with the same color form a group. Blinking lights can indicate role or resource distribution, sound signals change of activity, etc. However, the actual meaning of each signal depends on the needs and creativity of the teacher who design the collaborative dynamic and its orchestration. Over the past 2 months, me and my friend Artem have been building antennas to receive signals from weather satellites as they pass overhead. This video chronicles our progress through this project and goes through some of the science involved in working with radio and receiving transmissions. We explore how dipoles work and how to build them, and how we built our final double cross antenna. We used an SDR (software defined radio) called a HackRF to do the work of interpreting the received signals and then decoded them with some special software. We pulled images from 4 satellites: NOAA 15, 18 and 19 as well as METEOR M2. The satellites broadcast immediately as they take the images and no images are stored, so we're likely the only ones on earth with these images. Prefer written instructions? Artificially-generated radio waves are used for fixed and mobile radio communication, broadcasting, radar and other navigation systems, satellite communication, computer networks and innumerable other applications. Different frequencies of radio waves have different propagation characteristics in the Earth's atmosphere; long waves may cover a part of the Earth very consistently, shorter waves can reflect off the ionosphere and travel around the world, and much shorter wavelengths bend or reflect very little and travel on a line of sight. Discovery and utilization: Radio waves were first predicted by mathematical work done in 1865 by James Clerk Maxwell. Maxwell noticed wavelike properties of light and similarities in electrical and magnetic observations. He then proposed equations, that described light waves and radio waves as waves of electromagnetism that travel in space. In 1887, Heinrich Hertz demonstrated the reality of Maxwell's electromagnetic waves by experimentally generating radio waves in his laboratory. Many inventions followed, making practical the use of radio waves to transfer information through space. Propagation: The study of electromagnetic phenomena such as reflection, refraction, polarization, diffraction and absorption is of critical importance in the study of how radio waves move in free space and over the surface of the Earth. Different frequencies experience different combinations of these phenomena in the Earth's atmosphere, making certain radio bands more useful for specific purposes than others. Radio communication: In order to receive radio signals, for instance from AM/FM radio stations, a radio antenna must be used. However, since the antenna will pick up thousands of radio signals at a time, a radio tuner is necessary to tune in to a particular frequency (or frequency range). This is typically done via a resonator (in its simplest form, a circuit with a capacitor and an inductor). The resonator is configured to resonate at a particular frequency (or frequency band), thus amplifying sine waves at that radio frequency, while ignoring other sine waves. Usually, either the inductor or the capacitor of the resonator is adjustable, allowing the user to change the frequency at which it resonates. Please do not over-drive your transmitter by setting your soundcard output level too high. And, check for RF getting back into your audio. Bad audio causes transmitted signal spurs and interference on the transmitted signal for which you are responsible. http://NW7US.us/jt65a.html is a reference with a how-to guide on setting up your JT65A digital station. When using any digital mode, for instance in our interest of JT65A operation, it is critical that you do not over-drive your transmitter. Concerning ALC readings and digital operation: In every case that I am familiar with, any ALC action at all indicates that the processing circuits are dropping back the audio drive so the radio will not be over-driven. This results in a non-linear mode of operation, since the output does not follow the input in a straight line. The output drops off or stays the same, regardless of an increase in the audio signal level -- in other words, *not linear* ! Digital modes require that the radio transmit a linear signal at all times. This translates to the fact that there should never be an ALC indication when you are transmitting! Now, on occasional "twitch" of the indicator is OK, but even that will cause the signal to be wide and the error rate for the other station will go up, and there will be splatter during those times of ALC movement. So: keep the audio drive settings below that which causes any ALC indication to show, and your transmissions should be clean and pure. 73 de NW7US

My neighbor’s kid is constantly flying his quad copter outside my windows. I see the copter has a camera and I know the little sexed crazed monster has been snooping around the neighborhood. With all of the hype around geo-fencing and drones, this got me to wondering: Would it be possible to force a commercial quad copter to land by sending a low-level pulse directly to it along the frequencies used by GPS? Of course, radio signal jamming is illegal in the U.S and, frankly, it would disrupt my electronics, too. In this presentation, we’ll look at some of the research and issues we encountered, when we attempted to force land two commercial drones (the new DJI Phantom 3 and the Parrot Bepop Drone) by sending GPS signals directly at the drones (while staying under the threshold for jamming and not disrupting anyone else). Speaker Bio: Michael Robinson has over 15 years of computer security experience and is currently a computer and mobile device forensic examiner in the Washington, DC area, where he deals with intrusion analysis, incident response, and criminal cases. For over four years he ran IT and IA operations for a Department of Defense agency. He has conducted research on security of mobile devices and is starting to play around in the drone space. He teaches computer forensics at the graduate level at Stevenson University in Maryland.

Minecraft: using redstone repeaters to send two signals with just one wire

To send two different signals along the same wire without using a clock, make one signal a single pulse using an edge trigger, and make the other signal a double pulse using an edge trigger and a repeater on max delay. Send the outputs of both along your wire. On the receiving end, have a toggle flip-flop. If it gets a single signal, it will turn on. If it gets the double pulse, it will turn on and then off again. Since we are using short pulses anyway, there is no need for an edge trigger. Wire the toggle output to an edge trigger, and then send the edge trigger output through a redstone repeater on max delay. This is the control signal. Wire the toggle output and the control signal to an AND gate. The AND gate will output a pulse if the original signal was a single pulse. Wire the inverted toggle output and the control signal to an AND gate. This AND gate will output a pulse if the original signal was a double pulse. Finally, feed the control signal through another max-delayed redstone repeater and then into a reset on the toggle to prepare the mechanism for the next signal.

Thousands of elephants roam Etosha National Park in Namibia, a nation in southwest Africa, taking turns at the park’s numerous watering holes. The elephants exchange information by emitting low-frequency sounds that travel dozens of miles under the ground on the savannah. The sound waves come from the animals’ huge vocal chords, and distant elephants “hear” the signals with their highly sensitive feet. The sound waves spread out through the ground and air. By triangulating the two types of signals using both ears and feet, elephants can tune into the direction, distance and content of a message. Seismic communication is the key to understanding the complex dynamics of elephant communities. There are seismic messages that are sent passively, such as when elephants eavesdrop on each others’ footsteps. More active announcements include alarm cries, mating calls and navigation instructions to the herd. Seismic communication works with elephants because of the incredible sensitivity of their feet. Like all mammals, including humans, elephants have receptors called Pacinian corpuscles, or PCs, in their skin. PCs are hard-wired to a part of the brain where touch signals are processed, called the somatosensory cortex. In elephants, PCs are clustered around the edge of the foot. When picking up a far-off signal, elephants sometimes press their feet into the ground, enlarging its surface by as much as 20 percent. Strictly speaking, when elephants pick up ground vibrations in thei feet, it’s their sense of feeling, not hearing, at work. Typically hearing happens without physical contact, when airborne vibrations hit the eardrum, causing the tiny bones of the inner ear tremble and transmit a message to the brain along the auditory nerve. But in elephants, some ground vibrations actually reach the hearing centers of the brain through a process called bone conduction. By modeling how the elephant’s inner ear bones respond to seismic sound waves, scientists are hoping to use a bone-conduction approach develop new and better hearing aids for people. Instead of amplifying sound waves through the ear canal, these devices would transmit sound vibrations into a person’s jawbone or skull. --- Where did you film this episode? It was filmed in Etosha National Park in Namibia, at Menasha watering hole, which is closed to the public. We also filmed with the elephants at the Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) sanctuary in San Andreas, Calif. --- Do all elephants communicate seismically? Both species of elephants – Asian and African – can pick up vibrations in their feet. There are some differences in anatomy between the two species, which cannot interbreed.
