Cold storage is important for anyone with bitcoin holdings. Online computers are vulnerable to hackers and should not be used to store a significant amount of bitcoins. There are three ways to create secure Bitcoin cold storage: paper wallets, hardware wallets, and offline computers using software wallets. How to Create a Bitcoin Cold Storage Wallet Using Electrum

35:15
The Crypto Dad shows you how to set up a cold storage wallet using the Electrum Bitcoin wallet. We go through creating an “air-gapped” computer with no connection to the Internet. Then we install the Electrum Bitcoin Wallet on that computer. This copy will be used just to sign transactions. It will never connect to the Internet. We than install the “watching-only” component on our normal “working machine” This component of the wallet will only receive bitcoin or broadcast transactions that have been signed by the cold storage component. The Electrum Bitcoin wallet is software that runs on your computer. It is an application that allows you to send, receive and store bitcoins. It also has advanced features that allow you to check your current balance, see a list of transactions, and even maintain several “wallets”. It does this by allowing you to access a bitcoin address on the Bitcoin blockchain. Access to a Bitcoin address is provided by a cryptographic key-pair. The key-pair is a public/private asymmetric cryptographic key. The public key is the receiving address. This is the address you can share with others, so they can send you bitcoins. The private key is the part that allows you to send bitcoins. The Electrum Bitcoin software creates a new key-pair whenever you create a new wallet. It stores the private key on your computer. The private key is protected by on-disk encryption. Electrum will automatically decrypt the private key when you wish to send bitcoins. Access to the private key is also enhanced by a password or your own choosing that you can set when the wallet is created. Best practice is to choose a strong password for your Electrum Bitcoin Wallet. The Electrum Bitcoin Wallet is one of the most popular Bitcoin wallets for desktops. It has several advanced features that make it robust and flexible. It supports Two Factor Authentication, Multi-sig Wallets, and Cold Storage. Another unique feature of the Electrum Bitcoin Wallet is that it does not require you to download the entire Bitcoin Blockchain on to your computer (which can be time-consuming and requires a lot of space). It does this by maintaining several Blockchain servers which allow you to quickly access the current state of the Bitcoin Blockchain and the up-to-date status of the wallets you control. This includes your current balances and the transaction history for each of your wallets. What is Bitcoin? Bitcoin is a new technology that functions as a digital currency. It is a peer-based, decentralized way to hold, store, send, and receive value. It does this by maintaining a cryptographic “ledger” called the Blockchain. All of the bitcoins in existence are created and stored on the Blockchain. Bitcoin with a capital “B” refers to the technology itself. Bitcoin spelled with a little “b” refers to the tokens that hold the value and can be exchanged with others. Multiple copies of the Blockchain exist on thousands if not millions of computers worldwide. Each copy of the Blockchain “verifies” itself by connecting to the Internet and making sure it has the most up-to-date list of transactions. The Blockchain maintains its integrity by using strong, modern, encryption techniques. This makes it impossible for anyone to alter the ledger, create fake transaction or “double-spend” their bitcoins. Bitcoins do not require banks or third-party financial services to act as central clearing houses for electronic transfers. In essence, Bitcoin technology “cuts out the middleman”. Bitcoin is a decentralized, peer-to-peer monetary system that exists outside of the traditional, centralized, fiat-currency based financial system.

Bitcoin Q&A: Hot vs. cold wallets

04:59
The dangers of custodial accounts; not your keys, not your money. Security practices for long-term vs. short-term storage, trading, and transacting. I don't leave any currency (crypto or fiat) in an exchange for longer than 15 minutes. I use these cryptocurrencies to pay my bills, so I transact very often. So far, I've only ever lost small amounts of bitcoin through stupid mistakes. 1. Don't leave your money on exchanges longer than you have to. If you day-trade, make sure you understand the risk that entails. 2. Organise a tiered storage system of hot and cold wallets, factoring in the amount of bitcoin you're storing, how you plan to use it (soon or not for a long time), and what security risks you're willing to take with each tier. 3. Use cold storage (i.e. paper wallets) for large amounts or for bitcoins you don't plan on using for a longer period of time. 4. Use hardware wallets that are PIN or password-protected 5. Use multi-signature multi-party or multi-factor wallets for carrying out your weekly business transactions. 6. Use hot wallets (ex. mobile wallets) for petty cash, or if you are the Oprah of cryptocurrency. How To Make A Bitcoin Wallet Offline - Cold Storage Safe, Secure, Fast AND EASY!

07:59
If you store your Bitcoin at an online wallet like Coinbase or a trading exchange, THEY ARE NOT SAFE! Plain and simple! You need to create an OFFLINE wallet immediately! Offline wallets are also known as "Cold Storage" and it's the only way to ensure that your Bitcoins stay safe and secure! If this is the first time you've ever heard of a cold storage wallet or a bitcoin private key, I would strongly suggest doing more research into Bitcoin before you invest any more of your money. The worst possible thing to have happen is someone come along and steal your Bitcoins because you didn't properly secure them. Sign Up to Coinbase & Get $10 FREE - https://goo.gl/G4CKRw If making your own offline cold storage wallet seems like too much work or if you think you'd find a way to mess it up, I would suggest buying a Trezor Hardware Wallet. These things are more secure than an online wallet and are SUPER easy to use! If you want to purchase a hardware wallet instead of making your own cold storage wallet, check this link - https://goo.gl/b4ZjFB If you're looking to make a your own paper offline wallet, you can do that here - http://www.bitcoinpaperwallet.com or http://www.bitaddress.org Want to TRADE Bitcoin for other crypto currecny? There are several types of wallets that provide different ways to store and access your digital currency. Wallets can be broken down into three distinct categories – software, hardware, and paper. Software wallets can be a desktop, mobile or online. Desktop: wallets are downloaded and installed on a PC or laptop. They are only accessible from the single computer in which they are downloaded. Desktop wallets offer one of the highest levels of security however if your computer is hacked or gets a virus there is the possibility that you may lose all your funds. Online: wallets run on the cloud and are accessible from any computing device in any location. While they are more convenient to access, online wallets store your private keys online and are controlled by a third party which makes them more vulnerable to hacking attacks and theft. Mobile: wallets run on an app on your phone and are useful because they can be used anywhere including retail stores. Mobile wallets are usually much smaller and simpler than desktop wallets because of the limited space available on a mobile. Hardware: wallets differ from software wallets in that they store a user’s private keys on a hardware device like a USB. Although hardware wallets make transactions online, they are stored offline which delivers increased security. Hardware wallets can be compatible with several web interfaces and can support different currencies; it just depends on which one you decide to use. What’s more, making a transaction is easy. Users simply plug in their device to any internet enabled computer or device, enter a pin, send currency and confirm. Hardware wallets make it possible to easily transact while also keeping your money offline and away from danger. Paper: wallets are easy to use and provide a very high level of security. While the term paper wallet can simply refer to a physical copy or printout of your public and private keys, it can also refer to a piece of software that is used to securely generate a pair of keys which are then printed. Using a paper wallet is relatively straightforward. Transferring Bitcoin or any other currency to your paper wallet is accomplished by the transfer of funds from your software wallet to the public address shown on your paper wallet. Alternatively, if you want to withdraw or spend currency, all you need to do is transfer funds from your paper wallet to your software wallet. This process, often referred to as ‘sweeping,’ can either be done manually by entering your private keys or by scanning the QR code on the paper wallet. [HOW TO]- Store Bitcoin On USB Stick - Guide

14:01
In this video I'll show you how to make a secure and encrypted USB Bitcoin Wallet. I'm going to use MultiBit to create this wallet and then store it onto a USB thumb drive for safe keeping. I'm also going to copy the contents of the USB drive onto multiple other USB drives so that my money is backed up in multiple locations. This way, if anything happens to one of my USB wallets, I can fall back on a copy that I made, and recover the bitcoins (BTC). Even though there are copies of my wallet files, they will all be updated to the real balance if any one of them is modified. This is because the private keys, once accessed with your password or pass phrase, within the Bitcoin network ultimately keep track of the money associated with them. This is why we can create this wallet offline, and allow the network to synchronize and verify that the funds that are supposed to be in our wallet appear. If necessary, we can send the funds from the USB stick to another wallet, either Online, Cloud, or Offline cold storage. Thanks for watching! Here is a quick video showing off a 15$ android phone that is acting as a cold storage device. All you will need is an android phone that is used for NOTHING else A micro sd card USED FOR NOTHING ELSE and to download a copy of a bitcoin wallet APK ( I chose mycelium here https://mycelium.com/) You can sweep the funds in a couple of ways, the easiest would be connect to a secure wifi and send the funds to your main wallet. You can also use another wallet with sweep feature or just use the private keys directly.

This is a free sample lesson from 'The Secrets Of The Bitcoin Triangle' course, where you will 'Discover The 21 Fast Track Ways To Make And Save With Bitcoin (Starting From Scratch)'. You can sign up for the full course at: https://www.cryptoversity.com/courses/secrets-of-the-bitcoin-triangle/ A Bitcoin wallet is a piece of software you use to communicate with the Bitcoin network and tell it when you want to send and receive transactions. The best way to understand a Bitcoin wallet is by comparing it to email. Once you have setup an email address you need some kind of software to allow you to send and receive emails to that address. Now this software may be an app on your phone, it may be an app on your laptop or it could even be an app you log into online. With email, you enter the username and password for your email address into the app and that’s how the Internet knows it’s really you that is sending and receive emails to that address. Now of course you tell everyone your email address and you have to do that in order for anyone to send you a message. But just because someone knows your email address, that doesn’t allow them to send email from that address. If they could that would be bad because then they could send emails pretending to be you and cause all kinds of problems. In order to be allowed to send email from a particular email address, you have to know the password. If someone finds out your email password then there’s nothing stopping them from logging in to your email app and sending messages. This is very similar to how a Bitcoin wallet works. Every Bitcoin account has two elements to it. One is called your public address, which is like your email address, and one is called your private key, which is like your password. So just like email, you can give anyone your Bitcoin public address and then anyone, anywhere in the world can send you some Bitcoin. They don’t need to know anything about you. All they need is that public address and they can send money to you. Your Bitcoin private key on the other hand is the one thing you must protect. It’s called your private key for a reason because you should never reveal this to anyone. If someone gets your email password, that’s bad because they can start sending emails from your address, but that’s not quite as bad as someone getting your Bitcoin private key because then they can steal all of your Bitcoins by sending them somewhere else. And just like email, once a Bitcoin transaction has been sent, it’s a one way trip. The only way to get it back would be for the person you sent it to to voluntarily send it back. Bitcoin literally works like digital cash. Once you’ve handed it over, the Bitcoin belongs to that other person. And the same goes for when you receive Bitcoin. Once someone sends it to you, it’s yours and no one can take it from you. The only way they could do that is if they knew your private key. And of course now you know never to give this to anyone.

How to Create a Secure ‘Cold Storage’ Bitcoin Wallet using Bitkey

10:12
How to create a secure ‘Cold Storage’ Bitcoin Wallet using Bitkey After Buying or Mining Bitocoins We need a secure storage where we can store Our bitcoins Safely and Protect it from Hackers after the Hacking attack in 2004 In this guide you'll learn how to boot Bitkey to create a 'cold storage' offline Bitcoin wallet, which is never directly connected to the internet. This protects it both from online hackers and malware designed to exploit Microsoft’s Windows operating system. You'll also learn how to set up an online 'watching' wallet which you can use to view your balance and previous transactions. Your watching wallet can also be used to send Bitcoins by generating a special 'transaction' file, which you can then sign using the cold offline wallet. In order to get started, all you need are three empty USB sticks of at least 4GB capacity. You'll also need a way to clearly tell these apart: for example, you could purchase USB sticks which are different colors. You need to follow these important steps very carefully 1. Create BitKey Installer Open your web browser and navigate to https://bitkey.io/. Click the 'Download' button then click on 'Bitkey ISO' to download the CD image. If you're running Windows 10 and your machine has a DVD burner, you can write this to a blank disc by inserting it, right clicking the file and choosing 'Burn Disc Image'. If you have no DVD drive, you can create a bootable USB stick using the file you just downloaded. The easiest way to do this in Windows is to use the program Rufus. Follow the instructions on the website to do this. Once you've created your boot medium, save any important files. Windows users can then restart to the 'Advanced Startup Options' screen and choose the DVD or USB stick from there. If you're using a Mac hold down the Alt key on startup to show the boot menu, then double click on the external disk. 2. Remove and insert USB keys Once the Bitkey boot menu shows, choose the first option: cold-offline (green). True to its name, once the desktop loads you'll see the background is green. This signifies that the cold-offline version of Bitkey is not connected to the internet so can't be hacked remotely. If you're using a USB stick to boot Bitkey, remove this now and put it in a safe place. Next, insert a separate, blank and formatted USB stick into your machine. Ideally use a brand new USB drive for this. Juggling USB sticks can be confusing. As we mentioned at the outset, Bitkey recommends color-coding your USB sticks. The one you just removed will be called 'Red' (feel free to mark it with some red tape or a pen accordingly). The new, blank stick you're inserting is will be known as 'Black'. You should only ever insert the 'Black' USB stick when booted into the cold-offline desktop. 3. Set up your cold wallet Click the blue Electrum icon at the very bottom left of the screen. You'll first be asked to set a passphrase to protect the wallet files you're about to create. Enter a suitably long passphrase and click 'OK'. The Electrum install wizard will now launch. Leave the default options checked and click 'Next'. Electrum will now display a dozen random words. This is what’s known as your 'wallet generation seed'. Make sure to write this down and put it in a safe place. Click 'Next' and retype your seed to make sure you have it written down correctly. Click 'Next', set a password specific to this wallet, then choose 'Next' again. Electrum will now launch 4. Export Payment Address and Public key As soon as your Electrum wallet opens, click on the 'Receive' tab. Make a note of your 'Receiving Address'. You'll need to provide this address to anyone who's sending you BTC. If you already have an existing Bitcoin wallet, scan the QR code to send your funds here. As the wallet is offline, don't worry if your balance doesn't display right away. Next click the 'Wallet' menu and choose 'Master Public Keys'. You'll need this to create an online 'watching' wallet in the next step so you can view your balance. Either write down the master key carefully or scan it using a QR code app on your phone. 5. Create Watching Wallet Close down Electrum and use the icon at the bottom-right to shut down the machine. Ignore the warning about your session being 'non-persistent' as you've saved your wallet data to the USB stick. Be sure to remove the 'Black' USB drive and put it somewhere safe. Reboot the machine and choose the second boot option: cold-online (blue). Now you need to insert another new USB drive, which we'll name 'Blue'. This will be used to store your watching wallet settings. Blockchain is unhackable which makes BitCoin impossible to steel without the password....Here in lies the problem...our computers are hackable and it is very easy for hackers to 'break in' to our computers and steel our passwords. Therefore, the safest way to store BitCoin is to put it in a cold storage wallet. This video explains just how to do that.

Bitcoin 101 - Intro to Paper Wallets & Cold Storage - Bitcoin Security & Fun with Sloppy Wallets

26:57
Bitcoin security? UGH!!! Bitcoin does so many things better than banks (trusts, escrows, programmable money, cheap transfers, instant accounts, etc.), but one area that is not quite so nice, is security. While the bitcoin network, itself, appears bullet-proof, lots of bitcoins are being stolen, via hacking, malware and flaws in online wallets and even google's random number generator. The answer is to get your bitcoins entirely offline, and the two ways to do this are paper wallets and cold storage. This video is an introduction to making both. Host, James D'Angelo, walks you through the software and ideas used in making 'sloppy' offline wallets (which are great to have). He also gives suggestions at making even better offline wallets. This is the first of many videos we will make on bitcoin security, and the least technical. We hope you'll enjoy. Here's the private keys we generate in this video with their public addresses! PRIVATE KEY #1 (we sent one dollar to this one on Jan 5th) 5KNhmaUuPNeau7KptEhWefEcAwfMim8VABR6QhJH8JHAFBbnCe5 PUBLIC ADDRESS 17SwcawAtnCQmemPDDBGurd28tTbEbuK5z You can see it live here https://blockchain.info/address/17SwcawAtnCQmemPDDBGurd28tTbEbuK5z PRIVATE KEY #2 (we didn't send any funds to this one) 5J2VYxJsAktgLZ7PWNevxAEPFaKPftCYhyi1VxMHzT56kLTwtLY PUBLIC ADDRESS #2 19ZxxVTac6zxH9a9xqXhtntepTLosFa8F9 You can see it live here https://blockchain.info/address/19ZxxVTac6zxH9a9xqXhtntepTLosFa8F9 These keys will work forever, and are open wallets. You can play with them, send tiny amounts of bitcoins (very tiny because the funds in these wallets are spendable by anyone because the private key is public) and you can even withdraw the funds in them if there is still some left!!! nice. It’s the private address that you want to keep from exposing to potential hackers by keeping your computer offline while this is being displayed because it is the private key that allows you to withdraw the funds. Print out this page, make a copy just in case, or write it down, both the public and private keys or addresses and store somewhere very safe. Now when you are ready to move your bitcoin or you want to cash out, you can do this by creating a free account with blockchain.info. All you need is an email and password. Once you are signed up they will send you an email with your wallet ID, now this is very important because you’ll need this ID to log into this account. With your brand new account you’ll need to go to the settings menu and under the security options be sure to back up your account with the wallet recovery phrase. This will allow you to still gain access to your funds even if you forget your password. Once you’ve written down your recovery phrase store this in a safe place much like you would your private key for your paper wallet. How you import your paper wallet onto your blockchain.info account. Go to Settings and then select the addresses option. Here you can Import addresses. Now pay attention. In order to import your paper wallet you’ll need to type in the PRIVATE address of your paper wallet. It is for this reason that I highly suggest that you take out all coins from the paper wallet as the private key has essentially been compromised. Even if you want to continue storing some of your bitcoin on a paper wallet, just create a new paper wallet and store them there. Discontinue use of any paper wallet that has had it’s private key used anywhere on the internet. You can do so by getting your blockchain.info wallet address by selecting the “receive” option here, copy the address and then go to the “send” option and select the wallet you’d like to send coins from, and paste the address of the blockchain.info wallet. So you will have effectively imported your paper wallet and transferred all of your funds out of that paper wallet address and onto your blockchain.info wallet, the same wallet that is now backed up with your recovery phrase. Congratulations! Whenever you want to send coins from one wallet to another, this includes exchanges, since the coins you have on an exchange are in a wallet on that exchange… you’ll need to follow this general protocol. Three very important tips for anyone new to transferring their crypto: First, be sure the wallet you are sending your coins to is appropriate for the coins you are sending, you cannot send ethereum into a bitcoin address, or pivx to a Monero address, or steem to a steem backed dollar address. If you do this your coins will be lost. Second, be sure you input the correct address into the recipient field. I know most crypto addresses have a lot of upper and lower case letters and numbers and they can be daunting to look at at first, so I always double check the first few characters and the last few characters to be sure that I’m sending my coins to the right address. Third, if you need to transfer a large amount of coins and you’re nervous because it’s your first time transferring that particular coin or it’s your first time using that particular address, just send a small amount first. Once you see that it’s gone through then you can have some peace of mind that you can send the larger amount successfully.

Backing up Your bitcoins using the Electrum Bitcoin Wallet

18:47
The Crypto Dad shows you how to back up the Electrum Bitcoin wallet. I go through making sure your password is stored in a safe place. Then I talk about printing out the seed and keeping it safe. Then I discuss how to export your private keys. Finally, I show you how to make a copy of your wallet and re-open it. Electrum bitcoin wallet: https://electrum.org/#home iPhone Screen share was done using X-Mirage http://www.x-mirage.com/ Passwords were stored in the One Password App https://1password.com/ Donate Bitcoin: 1JBxwXG8P6PYKKsrHKzQduM8s8RoV3dnjr What is the Electrum Bitcoin Wallet?

How To Import Bitcoin Paper Wallet and Turn Bitcoin Into CASH!

Bitcoin offline wallets are also know as cold storage and this method is one of the safest ways to store your Bitcoin. The reason for this is because YOU hold your own Bitcoin Private Keys which are essentially the keys to your kingdom. Without knowing the private keys, you are not going to be able to withdraw any money from your bitcoin wallet. This is also why it's so important to protect your own private keys. How to Use a Trezor Hardware Wallet - Keeping Your Bitcoin Safe

11:17
Hardware wallets are a must to keep your Bitcoin safe! See my review on the Trezor cryptocurrency wallet and why you should use it if you care about your cryptos! Many people know that one of the big draws cryptocurrencies and blockchain assets have is the security provided by the blockchain. But one of the biggest misconceptions about cryptos is that because the blockchain is essentially unhackable, so are an individual’s wallets and the Bitcoin and altcoins they store. Simply put, this is absolutely not the case! So long as a person keeps their wallet keys on a computer or phone, those wallets and coins are at the mercy of hackers (especially if it is an online wallet through a third party!!!). A perfect example of this was the $80 million dollars in Bitcoin that were stolen by hackers from the most famous mining pool Nichash on December 2017. So what can anyone do to keep their cryptos safe? The answer, use Hardware Wallets! These specialized hardware devices are essentially encrypted lock-boxes for valued digital currencies! On this review, we’ll be looking at my current favorite choice, the Trezor wallet by Satoshi Labs. They do currently have a new model (the Trezor Model T) in pre-production, but I’ll be using the original model for this video. We’ll be covering all the necessities to getting started storing your Bitcoin and altcoins securely offline via hardware wallets. After we get everything set up, we’ll also be showing you how to create your first transaction onto the wallet (Litecoin will be used for this video, but the process is identical for non ETH/ERC20 tokens). So do you keep your cryptocurrency safe in a hardware wallet offline? If you already use a cold storage wallet (like the Trezor), let us know which one you use in the comments below.
