How to Get More LinkedIn Connections and Build your Profile

It seems most businesses are more concerned about being active on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter but only a few understand the value of LinkedIn and know how to make the most out of this social network. LinkedIn is very powerful because it is the playground for professional connections. LinkedIn is where the professional community engages with each other, communicates and refers, allowing you to connect with key decision makers in your industry. LinkedIn also happens to be the largest professional network online with over 300 million users. Plus, a large majority of users are decision makers, affluent and educated. So how do you get more Linkedin connections? There are 6 tips we recommend you follow to grow your network. The first tip on how to increase linkedin connections, is of course optimizing your profile. It’s critical you use a professional-looking headshot of you (avoid cropped pictures at all costs!) with a plain background. In addition, profile pictures should not be dark or pixelated. You should also be looking direct-to-camera and smiling. Too often, a poor choice of profile picture can turn people away. Then, decide which keywords you want to be associated with, to make sure your name appears in the search results when people look for these keywords. For example, if you own a digital marketing agency, the main keywords used in the summary section, experience section and skills section of your could be: SEO, social media marketing and blogging. Remember to also include a strong headline for your profile together with a customized background to make your profile stand out even further. The second tip is adding connections on LinkedIn by sending personalized connection requests. By default, when you send a connection request on LinkedIn, the person will receive the message “I’d like to add you to my professional network on Linkedin” and most users receive quite a few every day. Instead, edit the message and personalize it, by adding their first name and explaining why you’d like to connect with that person in particular so your request stands out. Before doing so, check the person’s profile and see whether you have anything in common to justify the connection request. The third tip concerning how to increase linkedin connections is giving endorsements. Endorsements on LinkedIn help contribute to the strength of a person’s profile and increases their chances of being found for opportunities related to the skills they have. To check and manage your endorsements, simply go to the “skills” section of your profile. You can have up to 50 skills listed which can be endorsed, but we recommend just listing the 10 most important ones to you. In order to receive endorsements, a good habit to adopt is giving endorsements first as most people will reciprocate. The 4th tip is posting quality, engaging content daily if possible. The more you publish content that is useful to people, the more connections you’ll attract as you will have created a need for your updates. There are two ways on LinkedIn you can publish content. The first one is publishing an update which can be as short as one or two sentences. The second one is leveraging their blogging platform which allows you to publish long-form articles. The more valuable content you provide on a regular basis, the more profile views you’ll receive and therefore the more connection requests you’ll get. The 5th tip is engaging with your connections’ updates. By liking, commenting and sharing their posts, this will increase your visibility and will make people outside your existing network want to connect with you. This is especially the case when your comments are valuable and interesting as users will find themselves clicking on your name to check out your full profile. The 6th tip is promoting your profile outside LinkedIn. For example, you can add your profile link to your email signature and on your business card. You can also add a linkedin widget on your website or on any other marketing material you produce. The second tip I have for you is specific to LinkedIn. Whenever you're writing your descriptions, so let's say you're sharing content, or something from your website on LinkedIn, keep your sentences very short. The third tip I have for you is don't just promote your business. Everyone's like, "Yeah, I want sales from Facebook. "I want sales from LinkedIn. "I'm just going to start promoting "my products and services." Well if you keep doing that, and you're not being social, because that's the whole purpose of these social sites is to be social, you're going to find that your reach is going to tank, and no one's going to see your content, like, or engage with it. The fourth tip is to leverage stories on Instagram and Facebook. They get so much engagement. What I like doing is sharing stories multiple times a day. Not just one or two stories but like 10, 12, 13. And even on Instagram what you can do that's really cool is that you're sharing stories. You can tell people to swipe up. Gary V. does this a ton. When he has a podcast or a blog post, he's like, "Swipe up, swipe up." It gets so much more engagement. That way his podcast is getting more downloads, people are going more to his site, he's getting more conversion and sales. It's a simple hack; it works well. And if you do multiple updates to your story each and every single day, it gives you more opportunities to get people to swipe up. The fifth tip I have for you is cross promote your social profiles. You're not just on Facebook. You're not just on LinkedIn. You're on all of them, or at least you're on the major ones. So tell all your Twitter fans or followers to follow you on Facebook. Tell your Facebook people to follow you on Twitter. Tell your people on LinkedIn to check out your Twitter and your Facebook and your Instagram, and do that vice versa with all your profiles. The sixth tip I have for you is to use exit popup. You know why I leverage exit popups? It's one of the highest converting things you can do. Someone's going to leave your site, might as well create that last ditch effort to get 'em to convert. And I don't recommend doing it on mobile. I would recommend doing it just for desktop. If you want to do it on mobile, I would recommend that you wait at least 30 seconds before you show it because it's too hard to detect when they're going to leave your site. The last tip I have for you is to test out video. Social platforms love video. So if you create video, you're giving them more potential eyeballs instead of the television networks. That's why companies like Netflix and Hulu, they're pushing so much on paid content. Everyone, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and all these social sites want that video content. You literally pull out the LinkedIn app, turn on Bluetooth and find people nearby then connect. Use this when you're out at networking events or when you're having coffee to meet people. This really works and you need to try it. Tip #2: Produce Content Get over the fact you don't like how you look or hate your voice. Tough. Produce content because it works. Look at some of the top influencers and how they're producing so much content. Some are not the prettiest people. But you know what? They just don't care. They know the power of networks. So you should do this too. Tip #3: Engage, Interact & Communicate Make sure that you're not that person who is just posting content and not engaging with people. Make sure that you dive deep into comments, talk to your audience and engage. Another cool "hack" is to comment on top ranking posts. Unlike other social networks like Twitter and Instagram, Linkedin gives its users the ability to publish two types of posts: a short post or an article, which is the equivalent of a long form post. There are many benefits to publishing Linkedin articles and not limiting yourself to just publishing short posts. The first benefit of writing articles on Linkedin is that it establishes you as a thought leader. By publishing articles on Linkedin with your own content, relevant to your business and industry, you automatically position yourself as an expert. The second benefit of writing articles on Linkedin is that the feature is free to all Linkedin users. Unlike publishing your own blog posts where you have to use paid platforms such as Wordpress and pay for hosting and a domain name, when publishing articles on Linkedin, the service is free. The third benefit of Linkedin publishing is that it helps you grow your reach. Instead of your content being seen only by your existing Linkedin audience, anyone on Linkedin can type in a keyword in Linkedin’s search box and when they click on “content”, all the articles ranking for that keyword will appear. In order to publish an article on Linkedin, simply login to your Linkedin account, and click on “write an article”. You’ll notice that there are 3 sections. A banner, a headline and the body of the article. When using Linkedin for business, write articles that spur dialogue, nurture relationships and create interest for your business by following the steps outlined below. First, to post an article on Linkedin, perform keyword research to see what keywords or keyword phrases your audience looks for. Ideally, these keywords should have low competition and high volume searches. Ideally, for a 1,000 word article, include 5 keywords throughout your article, three times each but make sure it doesn’t sound or look obvious that you’re keyword optimizing. Your article should flow nicely. To post an article on Linkedin, the second step is writing your title. Your title should include your most important keyword and should be attention-grabbing. Once you’ve decided on your title, make sure you create a banner for it. Your banner should be 600 x 322 pixels. The third step is writing your article. Your article should include a paragraph per idea. For example, if your article is about 5 steps, you should have a paragraph per step. If your article underlines mistakes to avoid, have a paragraph for each mistake. To make your article more enjoyable to read, include stories or examples for each idea you develop in your article. The fourth step after you’ve completed your article, is to add calls to action throughout your content. If your article is 1,000 word long, include your call to action three times throughout. The final step when using Linkedin for business, is simply publishing your article. Click on the ‘publish’ tab on the top right hand side a check one more you are happy with the layout and the content. If you’re not, you can always edit your article.

Linkedin is a leading social networking platform for professionals and Linkedin company pages now offer a fantastic opportunity for businesses to leverage this platform for marketing. A Linkedin company page is the equivalent of a Facebook page, which is a presence to market your business on LinkedIn instead of using a personal profile. There are many benefits to setting up a company page on linkedin. First, when you own one, Linkedin allows you to run “sponsored updates” which means, you can pay to promote your content on people’s newsfeed regardless of whether they follow your page or not. Plus, with a Linkedin page, you can link together all your staff members who have a Linkedin profile and who have stated their current position in their profile description. This leaves a clickable link from each employee that redirects to your company page and increases exposure. Another benefit of having a Linkedin company profile is that Google crawls Linkedin company pages and are very likely to list them on the first page of search results. How To Add A Company On Linkedin In order to create a linkedin company profile, you must own a personal LinkedIn profile and it must be more than 7 days old. In addition, your profile strength must be either be Intermediate or All Star level and you must already have a few connections. In addition, to be eligible to create a linkedin page, you have to hold a position in the company which is listed in the “Experience” section of your profile. You must also have a company email address (for example: [email protected] instead of a gmail.com address) added and confirmed on your LinkedIn account and Your company's email domain must be unique to the company. If you meet these requirements, then, simply go to “interests” then click on “companies” then click on “create” and follow the prompts to create a linkedin page. It is very important to upload as a profile picture, either a professional-looking head shot of you if your are the face of the brand or the company logo. To make sure it fits perfectly, a linkedin company page image size should be 250 x 250 pixels. Then, add a banner. Ideally your banner should match the banners you use on other social networks and your website in terms of images, sales message, colours and text fonts so there’s brand consistency. The banner should be 646 x 220 pixels so it fits perfectly. Banners should include a few important elements as it acts as your “shop front”. The image should reflect the ultimate benefit of owning your product or service. For example, if you are a recruitment agency, you could show a picture of happy, fulfilled and successful employees. The banner should also include your unique sales message, also known as a “marketing hook”. For example, if you own a fitness business for women, your marketing hook could be “Discover the secrets behind building the ultimate female body”. In addition, the banner should include your website url, or any link you wish to redirect people to, to access more information. Once you have created your company page on linkedin, commit to updating it with interesting, unique and engaging content for your audience. Always have your audience in mind when posting updates on your linkedin company page by asking yourself “will this inform them? Will this be of use to them? Will this be of interest to them? Will this entertain them?” With a company page on Linkedin you don’t necessarily have to post more than once a day. This will increase your engagement rate and therefore provide your business with more social proof. Then, put some effort into building your audience. To grow the followers on your linkedin company page, you can either advertise your page using Linkedin ads, or you can send an email to your database inviting them to follow your page, add the link to your Linkedin page to your email signature, add a linkedin tab on your website or even mention your new linkedin page on your other social networks. To make sure your linkedin company page is always spurring dialogue, nurturing relationships, creating solid interest for your business and consistently helping you grow your business, monitor other successful linkedin company pages in your industry and match what is working for them. What you want to do is send out LinkedIn connections whenever you can. Anytime you see get a potential recommendation on LinkedIn, click the connect button. Do it for all of the recommendations. Anytime you see someone you know just hit the Connect button and also send him/her a note to improve the chance that they accept your request. Do this for whoever you can. Anytime I send a LinkedIn connection which has been accepted, I'm super grateful to that person. Afterwards, I’ll go on their profile and just endorse all of their skills without expecting anything in return. I endorse all of their skills all the way from the top to the bottom of the LinkedIn profile endorsements section. An additional bonus that sometimes happens when you do this is that 1 out of 10 people will actually endorse you back. This makes endorsing new connections great for building your endorsements on your LinkedIn profile. You can just randomly endorse people you don't know on LinkedIn. Don’t worry, I do it all the time. I've gotten a lot of endorsements this way, and you can too. I definitely recommend you to to do this in order to grow your LinkedIn network and profile. Another thing I frequently do to improve my rapport with my LinkedIn network is send messages. if I know someone it doesn't have to be like they’re this outrageous person in my life, but I will send messages and recommendations just about whenever I can. Just write them a super glaringly awesome recommendation, put that in their profile, and not only it will show up on their profile if they accept it, expanding your network even further. Your recommendation will also be shown directly on your profile, whether they accept it or not. Because the recommendation you've just given is shown down at the bottom of your LinkedIn profile, it looks like you both know each other extremely well. It doesn’t actually matter how well you know the person, the recommendation you gave will appear on your LinkedIn profile even though you don’t actually know this person super well. In general, to grow your LinkedIn profile just be super generous and don't expect anything in return from the people you try to connect with. People aren't always going to be positive to you, accept your request, accept your LinkedIn recommendations, or even reply to your messages. However, if you keep pushing forward past the subtle rejections, your LinkedIn profile will have grown super fast within a matter of days. I've given recommendations to people I like and that I think are super cool, and then we met for coffee in person. You can literally meet people in person, just by connecting on LinkedIn. It’s so awesome. I just find it to be super super cool, and you can’t do this on other social networks like Facebook or Instagram. I've tried doing stuff like this on Facebook and it has literally almost never worked. LinkedIn is different than almost all of the other social networking sites. LinkedIn focuses way more on professional networking and I personally just find it less toxic than all the other social networks. It's really the only social network I use other than Twitter]. So, In conclusion, follow these tips and you will absolutely without a doubt grow your LinkedIn Network in a super short period of time. Trust me, I have done it and it has worked. I have thousands of people following me, and now my posts are being viewed way more and my online presence looks way more professional in general thanks to my LinkedIn profile. On Linkedin, your profile has a profile strength, from beginner, to intermediate to “all star”. The second Linkedin marketing mistake to avoid is not managing your Linkedin presence daily. You should login every day and publish an update, accept and send Linkedin connection requests, engage with other people to nurture relationships, respond to personal messages (also known as inmail), and keep an eye on your Linkedin advertising if you are running any paid campaigns. The third mistake to avoid when using Linkedin for marketing is incongruence. In other words, publishing content that is irrelevant to your audience and that doesn’t add value to them.
