Presented by +Nick Nystrom Bridges PI and Director of Strategic Applications, +Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center talk will begin at 2:30pm The Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) recently received a $9.65M +National Science Foundation (NSF) award to create a uniquely capable supercomputer designed to empower new research communities, bring desktop convenience to supercomputing, expand campus access, and help researchers facing challenges in Big Data to work more intuitively. Called Bridges, the new system will consist of tiered, large-shared-memory resources with nodes having 12TB, 3TB, and 128GB each, dedicated nodes for database, web, and data transfer, high-performance shared and distributed data storage, Hadoop acceleration, powerful new CPUs and GPUs, and a new, uniquely powerful interconnection network. Bridges will serve a wide variety of applications and scientists, especially those new to supercomputing and without specialized programming skills. It will do so by providing a high degree of interactivity, gateways and tools for gateway-building, and a very flexible user environment including widely-used software such as R, Java, Python, and MATLAB. Bridges will feature persistent database and web services to support gateways, collaboration, and new levels of access to data repositories. Using virtualization, Bridges will support application-specific environments and interoperability with clouds. Bridges will be a resource on XSEDE, the NSF Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment, and an important new part of NSF’s advanced cyberinfrastructure ecosystem, connecting with other computational resources, data resources, and scientific instruments. Bridges will be available to the open research community at no charge, bringing the power of high-performance computing and Big Data to enable research projects throughout Pennsylvania and across the country.

Quackery and pseudoscience can be very dangerous. Not only in medicine but also in human resources. Alarmed by the nonsensical ideas of Transactional Analysis, Patrick Vermeren set out on a mission to reveal the truth about the many HR theories, models and questionnaires. The academic literature revealed that most HR practices (in recruitment, assessment, development, coaching…) are very problematic and some even dangerous. In this Talk valid alternatives are presented. Patrick Vermeren has been active as a consultant, trainer and coach since 1996. He built on his experience at major Belgian banks ( Cera and Dexia) and an American multinational ( Procter & Gamble). Since he joined Perco he advises HR professionals and he guides groups and individuals in the areas of leadership, coaching and facilitating decision making in groups ( participation). He also assists CEOs, managers and high potentials through training and personal coaching. Land Conservation and Wildlife Management - The Management Advantage
Conservation and management go hand in hand. Without the conservation of natural resources and habitats, we might not have sustainable wildlife populations to manage today. Conservation practices and projects have been around for many years and thanks to them, we are able to enjoy the opportunity to harvest multiple deer a year or 6 ducks a day during waterfowl season. This week on The Management Advantage, we take a look at how conservation plays a role in wildlife management and a way companies can protect the environment while still completing the job at hand. New South Access and Environmental Solutions is a great example of current day conservation. They offer access solutions and construction matting for environmentally sensitive areas. Companies in new construction or infrastructure repair or improvement often need the ability to access wetland areas that are not only home to many types of wildlife, but also impossible to travel through without some sort of access solution. New South's use of the Emtek Air Bridge Access System provides the access needed to the wettest areas, but still protects it. The matting spreads the weight of heavy equipment over a large area limiting the footprint left after the project is completed. The design distributes weight horizontally and vertically. Even with heavy equipment utilizing the mats, the pounds per square inch on the environment is less than that of a human. New South Access and Environmental Solutions provides matting for all types of environments. In one of their latest projects in Minnesota, they supplied a local power company with three different tiers of matting solutions dependent upon the conditions of the marsh. This variety of access solutions saves their clients money, but doesn't sacrifice the preservation of the environment allowing them to return to their natural beauty and utilization by wildlife. She leads a university system with 10 campuses, five medical centers, three affiliated national laboratories, and a statewide agriculture and natural resources program. Napolitano is a distinguished public servant with a record of leading large, complex organizations at the federal and state levels. She served as Secretary of Homeland Security from 2009-13, as Governor of Arizona from 2003-09, as Attorney General of Arizona from 1998-2003, and as U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona from 1993-97. Before that, she practiced at the law firm of Lewis & Roca in Phoenix, where she became a partner in 1989. She began her career in 1983 as a clerk for Judge Mary M. Schroeder of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. As Governor of Arizona, Napolitano focused on education, from pre-kindergarten through public higher education. She was the first woman to chair the National Governors Association, and was named one of the nation’s top five governors by Time magazine. Napolitano earned a B.S. degree (summa cum laude in Political Science) in 1979 from Santa Clara University, where she was Phi Beta Kappa, a Truman Scholar and the university’s first female valedictorian. She received her law degree in 1983 from the University of Virginia School of Law. Napolitano holds honorary degrees from several universities and colleges, including Emory University, Pomona College and Northeastern University. In 2010, she was awarded the prestigious Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medal (Law), the University of Virginia’s highest external honor.

Students in the Vanderbilt Undergraduate ASCE Student Chapter: 2012 Projects & Competition
Vanderbilt's student chapter of ASCE, the American Society of Civil Engineers, is a professional organization dedicated to educating its members on various aspects of civil engineering. Members participate in annual conference competitions, such as the Steel Bridge and Concrete Canoe competitions shown in this video. ASCE members have access to internships and networking events with local alumni and industry experts. Dr. Lori Troxel is the advisor to the student chapter, and talks in this video about ASCE opportunities and activities. Environmental engineering is considered a sub-discipline within the Civil Engineering degree program. A major focus of the undergraduate Civil Engineering program is to prepare students for the next phase of their careers—whether that means engineering practice, management positions, or advanced education. Preparation for lifelong learning is a primary program goal. The civil engineering program integrates technical education with a strong foundation in humanities, fine arts, and social sciences. Environmental engineering is offered as a sub-disclipline within the Civil Engineering degree program. Students may take nearly half of their courses outside of the School of Engineering and associate daily with peers from other schools and colleges within Vanderbilt. Our program leading to the Bachelor of Engineering degree is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. Undergraduate courses include mathematics, science, engineering science, and engineering design...along with courses in economics, humanities, social sciences, resources management, and public policy. Students receive significant hands-on laboratory experience, and various computer-based problem-solving and design methods are taught.
