Apple vs. Bloomberg: Did China 'Big Hack' all the hardware?

15:22
SPONSOR: Go to https://skl.sh/vector9 to get your first 2 months of Skillshare — and unlimited learning! — for free! In 10 years of covering Apple, I've never seen anything like this. Bloomberg Businessweek has dropped a bombshell: Chinese intelligence — agents of the People’s Liberation Army — forced factories in China to add tiny spy chips to server boards being manufactured for industry-leading Super Micro, to be sold to industry giants like Apple and Amazon. Their boards and servers literally provide the hearts and minds for many of the world’s data centers, large and small. And, the report says, they’ve been hacked at the hardware level. Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/vectorshow?sub_confirmation=1 I’m an optimist. I like to believe Bloomberg would fact-check the hell out of all of this before printing world one. That they would have it cold. But I also like to believe no public company would risk refuting it this strong if they weren’t dead sure it was wrong. The various accounts can’t be reconciled. There are no multiple truths here. Someone got it wrong under circumstances where getting it wrong is catastrophic. Amazon, Apple deny alleged Chinese chip infiltration by Bloomberg

00:55
Apple and Amazon.com are strongly denying a Bloomberg Businessweek report that said their systems had been infiltrated by malicious computer chips inserted by Chinese intelligence agents. Bloomberg cited 17 unidentified sources from intelligence agencies and business to support claims that Chinese spies had placed microchips inside equipment used by about 30 companies and multiple US government agencies. The article published Thursday said the practice would give Beijing access to internal networks. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement about protecting cybersecurity, which was published by Bloomberg. But it is not clear whether the statement was in direct response to the report. Beijing has previously denied allegations of orchestrating cyber attacks against Western companies. In depth analysis on Bloomberg’s chip hack story

29:11
US media, namely Bloomberg, recently accused China of hacking US servers by planting microchips in a myriad of devices. Subsequently, tech giants like Apple and Amazon came out and denied those assertions. The US Department of Homeland Security has also dismissed the claims. So why is Bloomberg accusing China without hard evidence before the US midterm elections? What is the impact on the companies involved? And will this disturbance propel the ongoing trade tensions further? Bloomberg Exposes Apple OLED Lab

01:08
According to Bloomberg, Apple has a secret underground layer where they are developing new displays. Though the laboratory may not be underground, or a secret layer, the facility was once a trade secret but is no more. Located in Taiwan sources of Bloomberg's claim Apple has lab in Longtan with 50 engineers working on display technologies for i-devices. Opened earlier this year, they are reportedly working with organic LEDs to significantly change displays for their many lines of devices and future products. Known simply as OLEDs, the technology allows for now only thinner displays but ones that also curve; they also do not require a back-light providing a higher threshold for black-and-white contrast. The lack of a back-light is also better for energy efficiency. But these new diodes are also expensive to produce and manufacture with, which is why LCD screens are still commonly featured in many consumer electronic devices. http://feeds.mashable.com/~r/Mashable/~3/y7Q6Lk5g-5Q/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit Tech using http://wochit.com

Apple removes 25,000 ‘illegal’ apps from App Store in China

01:54
Apple removes 25,000 ‘illegal’ apps from App Store in China Apple has reportedly pulled more than 25,000 apps from its App Store in China that were deemed to fall foul of Chinese regulations. At least 4,000 of these apps were tagged with the word “gambling,” according to Bloomberg, while the 25,000 figure comes from state broadcaster CCTV. “Gambling apps are illegal and not allowed on the App Store in China,” Apple said in an statement sent to Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal. “We have already removed many apps and developers for trying to distribute illegal gambling apps on our App Store, and we are vigilant in our efforts to find these and stop them from being on the App Store.” “Apple itself has set up the rules on how to allow apps onto its store, but it didn’t follow that, resulting in the proliferation of bogus lottery apps and gambling apps,” The Wall Street Journal quoted CCTV as saying on Sunday. The move follows a period of increasingly negative state media coverage of Apple in China, often accusing the company of not doing enough to combat illegal online activity. In the past, Apple has frequently had to take steps to fall in line with Chinese authorities, previously removing apps for VPN services and The New York Times. The news of a mass removal of gambling apps isn’t surprising, then, but it’s a reminder of how American companies are forced to bend to the Chinese government’s rules if they want to do business in the country. The issue has gained prominence recently because of Google’s controversial plan to re-enter China with a censored news and search app, which has sparked protests within the company.

Apple's China Problem

11:19
It was around 2015 when Apple considered China one of the best markets for growth. And Apple actually hoped the Chinese market would one day be bigger than the US. Because at the time, the Chinese smartphone market was booming and because the Chinese population is so much larger than the US, it made sense that if Apple could become a leader in the Chinese smartphone market, they could potentially make more money from the country than any other. But since then, things haven’t exactly played out they way Apple would’ve liked. Because from 2015 to 2017, Apple’s sales to the Chinese market declined by about 23%. And that was the exact opposite of what Apple expected to happen. So the big question is: Why isn’t the iPhone selling well in China? And the answer is causing some major problems for Apple.

History of the App Store

12:07
Hey guys it’s Greg with Apple Explained, and as you can see from the title, History of the App Store won this week’s voting poll. Now I’m glad this topic won because 2018 is the ten year anniversary of the App Store and that means if you’re in middle school right now, you probably don’t remember what life was like before the app era. So let’s travel back to 2007, the year of the original iPhone, and explore how people used their smartphones without an app store. Back then, when you purchased a smartphone, whether it was a Blackberry, iPhone, or Nokia, you were stuck with the software included on the phone. If you wanted to use Facebook, you had to go through the smartphone’s web browser and get on Facebooks website. And because you were accessing the site on a mobile device, you were served the mobile site version. And the problem with this was most mobile sites were half-baked versions of the full website. So you typically didn’t have access to all its features and functionality, and if you did manage to access the full desktop site from a mobile device, it was slow, clumsy to navigate, and hard on your battery. So right away you can see the need for an app store. But things always appear more obvious in retrospect.

Apple CEO Tim Cook: The VICE News Tonight Interview (HBO)

08:47
Seven years into his tenure as Apple CEO, Tim Cook remains a popular guy, especially in an Apple store in New York, where he recently waded through a sea of adoring Apple fans pleading for selfies before he sat down with VICE News Tonight for an interview. This is partly because Cook’s competitors in Silicon Valley have set a low bar. Already under fire for being a tool for voter suppression and misinformation during the 2016 election, Facebook announced Friday that it had discovered the largest security breach in the company’s history, affecting 50 million users. Cook said that kind of data breach won’t happen at Apple, because the personal data Apple collects stays locked on iPhones, and even Apple can’t access it. “We're not in the business of building the detailed profile of you,” Cook said. “The way we go into product design, we challenge ourselves to collect as little as possible. And when we have it, we challenge ourselves to encrypt it in the end.” That has come at a cost to Apple’s business. Apple Music, for example, could build detailed profiles of users and sell that to advertisers, as competitors Spotify, Pandora, and Google Music do. But Cook considers that an affront to the basic promise of the Apple brand. “We don't read your messages,” he said. “These things, even in our heads, are offensive, right? To think about, these are private communications and intimate conversations that you are having. And so we wouldn't even think about that.” Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News Check out VICE News for more: http://vicenews.com Follow VICE News here: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/vicenews Twitter: https://twitter.com/vicenews Tumblr: http://vicenews.tumblr.com/ Instagram: http://instagram.com/vicenews More videos from the VICE network: https://www.fb.com/vicevideo
