Should We Trust the Media? | Biased Journalism & Creative Reporting

05:53
In this video we’re going to look at media bias, and the way that journalists use omission and creative reporting (including source manipulation) in order to shape the public discourse and push certain narratives. Like many people, I had always assumed Tl;dr If you ask me, you probably shouldn’t believe everything you see on the news. Side note: This video uses Hillary Clinton’s campaign as an example of the bias and corruption in journalism, and it is a critique media collusion, not Clinton’s campaign specifically. That would be a whole different video. My attempt to quantify bias in news media | Sophia Lobkowicz | TEDxYouth@ISPrague

07:27
In March 2016, still in her first year of high school, Sophia presented the results of her applied linguistics research project to a panel of professional academics at Prague's Charles University. She was curious about the views US media has towards migration, so she analysed the language used in articles on migration in specific US media sources. We often have ‘gut feelings’ about levels of objectivity in the media, but is there some way to verify those intuitions? Through statistical analysis using language databases, Sophia attempts to move one step closer to measuring bias. Sophia Lobkowicz is a high school student with US roots who was born and raised in Prague. Her family heritage includes relatives whose lives were disrupted by tumultuous international events in the last century. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

A Brief History Of Media Bias - One Minute To Midnight Episode 22

12:18
The news shapes how we perceive the world, and our place in it. It also informs the way we think. Presented here is a concise history of media bias. Although preceded by single event news publications and booklets, usually focused on single subjects, the printing press and appetite for information culminated in the birth of the newspaper, the first of which was Relation aller Fuernemmen und gedenckwürdigen Historien ("Collection of all distinguished and memorable news") in Strasbourg in 1605. Previously the type of message board news preceeded by Roman Actas had usually been concise, factual, an employed neutral language, with printed information that aimed to persuade confined to pamphlets. In England, since the emergence of the printing industry, distribution of news and printed information have been heavily controlled and censored by the government, but in 1641, a year before the nation was lunged into civil war, The Court of High Commission and the Star Chamber, a court closely tied to the King and often used to suppress opposition, were abolished by the Long Parliament, meaning that people suddenly became far less restricted in what they could print. With the civil war came propaganda, with titles such as The Parliament Scout reporting stories with a distinct political bias, its articles often written in the hope of casting the parliamentarians in a positive light, and the Royalists in a negative one, going head-to-head with its political opposite Mercurius Aulicus. Of course almost all printed information before this had been biased in some way... News and Frontier Consciousness in the Late Roman Empire By Mark W. 10 Traits of Toxic Parents Who Ruin Their Children’s Lives

10:22
Raising children is very difficult and no one has the right to judge someone's particular parenting style. However, some parenting mistakes are more dangerous than others and can seriously damage your child’s health. This video will help you find out what actually affects a child’s psyche and teach those who have toxic parents how they can deal with this issue. When raised by narcissistic parents, children suffer from slowed-down emotional development or none at all, will most likely suffer from depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder when they become adults and grow up into an adult that’s either a self-saboteur or a person ready to sacrifice everything to achieve high goals. Children of toxic parents live in constant fear and apprehension. They’ll grow up into teenagers forced to listen to their parents' complaints, adjust to a "complicated situation", put themselves in their parents' shoes, and help, tolerate, and console them. Toxic parents might not see anything wrong whatsoever in telling all the relatives, neighbors, and family friends that deeply sensitive information the child was pressured into disclosing. These types of parents instill an inferiority complex in their kids since they don't wanna see their child try new things and succeed. Their narcissistic self-love generates fear at the thought of their child becoming better, smarter, and more successful than they are. These parents seem to “generously” offer something that their children don’t really need, but any refusal causes resentment. A grown kid starts thinking, "My parents probably just want some company and wanna feel needed." So they accept the help, thank the parents, and offer something in return. But there's no happy ending here because the parents will always remind their children of that "favor" they did for them. "Open up to me but don't be surprised by ridicule." 3:54 6. "You're bad so don't even bother trying to become better." 4:31 5. "You can be successful but only if there’s something in it for me." 5:28 4. "Do exactly what I say, but it’s your fault if you fail." 6:15 3. "You’re such an inconvenience, but don't leave me alone." 6:38 2. "Accept our help but stop exploiting us." 7:11 1. "Trust me, but I’m still gonna go through your stuff." 7:58 How to handle a toxic parent? 8:44 SUMMARY -When raised by narcissistic parents, children don't feel loved, heard, or seen, believe that how they look is more important than who they really are as a person. They don't feel support when they try to develop their true self. -For toxic parents, an emotional attack is synonymous with love and attention. -Kids of toxic parents probably believe that it's specifically their bad behavior that makes their father abuse alcohol to calm himself down. -Even if their kid performs much better than they did once upon a time, all of the child's achievements are taken for granted. -Toxic parents force their children to be sincere and later use the same personal information against the kids. -Toxic parents eagerly discuss their child's failures and flaws. -They enjoy boasting about their kids’ success so that others envy them. Plus, a successful child is a guaranteed better life for parents. -Parents treat their child like an object: they make all the plans and expect their kids to follow along. -Toxic parents never want to let their children go. Yet they’re always pointing out that the house, the money, and the food belongs to them. -The kids turn into prisoners in either case: if they refuse their parents' help, they’re ungrateful brats. If they accept, they’ll always be made to feel indebted. -If you try to restrict access to your personal territory, your parents accuse you of distrust or even hiding something illegal or immoral. -We don’t pick our parents, and we can’t really change them. The only thing we can change is our reaction to their actions. Limit access to your personal territory. Choose your personal interests over those of your parents. Academics expose corruption in Grievance Studies

06:35
This playlist is the best way to learn about the The Grievance Studies Affair' and track the story as it unfolds - https://bit.ly/2zkBKBn This is first video revealing the behind-the-scenes story of how a trio of concerned left-wing academics (James Lindsay, Peter Boghossian and Helen Pluckrose) published seven intentionally absurd papers in leading scholarly journals in what has become known as 'The Grievance Studies Affair'. This series is associated with a feature-length documentary I'm working on. My plan is to play around with some of the footage I gather and upload it here to generate an audience and have a creative outlet while I learn about the complicated subject matter. My usual sources of film funding are blocked off to me because of the sensitive subject matter and the slow approach I'm taking. ALFRED MUTUA: RIGHT OF REPLY TO BIASED ARTICLE BY MR. OKECH KENDO

04:56
I wish to exercise my right of reply and take the opportunity to respond to a simplistic and personalised negative campaign by Standard Newspapers Managing Editor for Quality and Production, Mr. Oketch Kendo against me as the Spokesperson of the Government of Kenya. This in relation to a commentary on todays Standard Newspaper on page 15, entitled Spokesman caught spinning again. Mr. Oketch Kendo appears to be on a campaign to belittle my office and self by writing an opinion piece based on misconstrued information with an aim, which in my opinion, smacks of a Hitler-style propaganda campaign to demonize someone so as to destroy a persons credibility and messeges in the eyes of the public. This is an old-age trick that all communication experts are aware of. None of the examples Mr. Oketch Kendo has written about are real but are biased and mostly drawn from twisted reportage, some of which we have already complained about and even lodged letters with his management. Mr. Oketch Kendo should note that we do record all my press briefings and publish our statements on our internet web page and he should refer to these records for accuracy. Our country Kenya has undergone a lot of pain as a result of hatred against each other. Media have been blamed by the Waki commission for perpetuating this kind of hatred by negative attacks and biased coverage. The kind of continued attacks, biased opinions and negativity such as the one by Mr. Oketch Kendo are, in my opinion, part of what drove Kenyans to rise up against each other and kill each other. I was surprised by Mr. Oketch Kendos poor article because I have always admired his articulate and well thought of opinions. I can only assume that he is either on an agenda or misinformed. As a person who believes in peace and dialogue, I invite Mr. Oketch Kendo to visit me for a cup of tea or soup so that I could open his eyes on how the Government functions and how I work so that he can write from a perspective of knowledge and not ignorance. I do believe and know as fact that 98% of journalists and editors in Kenya are entirely professional, ethical and straight forward. When mistakes occur, these journalists and editors are quick to make corrections. However, there is a small percentage of journalists who operate on agendas some of which, I have always believed, are encouraged by corrupt payments. Let us not blame journalists or media when it is only a few people who are unprofessional. I acknowledge the wonderful intervention by media owners to clean up their houses and their unwavering championing of freedom of expression. We all need to work together in the spirit of bringing peace and harmony to our country so as to initiate development. Finally, I challenge Mr. Oketch Kendo or any of his friends who have been spewing propaganda against me and my office to prove real areas where I have lied to the public and where if an error was committed, I did not correct it. If they prove this using facts, I will resign from my position immediately. In the same token, if he is unable to prove his arguments, then he should also immediately resign from his employment for misleading the public and engaging in simplistic propaganda. I humbly request everybody in this country, whether citizen or foreigner, business people or the employed, Government Officials of Diplomats, students or workers, to join me in urging Mr. Oketch Kendo to embrace a positive spirit of developing our poor country and to desist from negativity that has achieved nothing but division and bloodshed in our country. Let us support freedom of expression and fairness. Fairness is all we ask for. Is that too much to ask? Dr. Alfred N. Mutua, EBS PUBLIC COMMUNICATIONS SECRETARY & GOVERNMENT SPOKESPERSON 2nd July, 2009

Charges fly from all points on the political spectrum: this story is mistaken — it’s Fake News; that statement is incorrect — it’s Fake News. But to my mind, these arguments miss the point. Mainstream American news is ALL fake because the major news outlets are so consistently biased toward the left that whether any given story they report is factual or not, their overall reportage is essentially leftist propaganda. You can complain about the right-wing slant of Fox News all you want, but left-wing ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC and CNN have, combined, almost ten times the viewers. Look, the chief journalist at ABC is former Clinton operative George Stephanopoulos; the president of CBS News is David Rhodes, the brother of a former senior Obama staffer. Comcast, which owns NBC, is run by a major Democrat donor. Same for the leadership at CBS and Time Warner, which owns CNN. Only seven percent of American journalists identify as Republican. And while a lot of news outlets forbid their reporters to donate to candidates, 96 percent of those who did donate last time out gave to Hillary Clinton. These journalists claim that despite the fact they’re all Democrats, they can be objective. It just ain’t so. Psychologists have shown that when people associate almost exclusively with those who agree with them, they suffer from groupthink and confirmation bias and lose their ability to see events clearly. Now, it’s not that these journalists are liars, exactly – it’s that their bias skews their reporting in very specific ways. Let me give you Andrew Klavan’s Three Rules of Mainstream Media Journalism. These can transform any story, whether it’s true or not, into Fake News. Rule Number One: Whenever left-wing prejudices are confirmed by a single event, that event is treated as representative. But whenever left-wing prejudices are contradicted by a single event, that event is treated as an isolated incident – and if you treat it as representative, you are deemed to be hateful. So, for instance, a white cop shoots a black suspect. The mainstream media treats that story as representative of general police racism even though studies show cops don’t use deadly force more often on blacks than on whites. On the other hand, if a Muslim commits an act of terrorism, and someone is bold enough to point out that the terrorist act is, in fact, representative of the daily acts of Muslim terror around the world, this is considered Islamophobic. The leftist media cherry-picks when an event illustrates a larger narrative. That’s Fake News. Rule Number Two: When a scandal breaks on the right, the news is the scandal. When a scandal breaks on the left, the news is: who wrongfully disclosed that scandalous information? Thus, when the media wanted to raise suspicions that Donald Trump was somehow in league with the Russians, they freely quoted illegally leaked information from intelligence sources. But when Congressman Devin Nunes announced he had information that the Obama administration might have misused intelligence against Donald Trump’s transition team, the story became: How did Nunes get that information? And did he do it legally? The scandal meter is heavily weighted to fall to the right. Fake News. For the complete script, visit https://www.prageru.com/videos/what-fake-news

Manufacturing Consent. Why Journalists Hide Facts And Censor Information.

04:52
Noam Chomsky's manufacturing consent filter 4 discusses how flak causes the media to self-censor and how this forms a filter regarding which news is published. Flak and the Enforcers: "Flak" refers to negative responses to a media statement or program (e.g. letters, complaints, lawsuits, or legislative actions). Flak can be expensive to the media, either due to loss of advertising revenue, or due to the costs of legal defense or defense of the media outlet's public image. Flak can be organized by powerful, private influence groups (e.g. think tanks). The prospect of eliciting flak can be a deterrent to the reporting of certain kinds of facts or opinions. Media Propaganda Techniques

06:04
Media Propaganda Techniques Here are some of the tried and tested propaganda techniques that are used by the media, politicians, corporations and lobbyists to push their agenda(s). I became really interested in this topic during Brexit and the US Presidential election because I witnessed an obscene amount of propaganda in real time ... and was astounded by the level of truth distortion. 1) 1) Astroturfing Seasoned veteran investigative journalist Sharyl Attkisson explains, “Astroturf is a perversion of grassroots. Astroturf is when political, corporate or other special interests disguise themselves and publish blogs, start Facebook and twitter accounts, publish ads, letters to the editor, or simply post comments online, to try to fool you into thinking an independent or grassroots movement is speaking.” Example: A New York Times piece in January discovered 403 groups contributed to the Women's March. Of the 403, 56 of the key partners have close relationships or have received funding from George Soros - notorious radical left wing billionaire philathorpist. These “key partners” include Planned Parenthood, MoveOn.org, & Amnesty International. All of them rabidly left wing. Although the media sold the Women's March as a spontaneous action for women's rights, it was very clearly a strategic partisan march for anti-Trumpers. 2) Subliminal Messaging When a person is unwittingly bombarded with cleverly concealed information, an emotion can be trigged leaving a person’s intellect and better judgment subjugated in favor of a mental process like fear or sexual desire. It was suggested that the BBC is trying to manipulate the public perception of Jeremy Corbyn - the UK's Labour Leader. The graphic shows him beside the flag of the European Union - which is odd, because he's British - so where's the Union Jack? But also, notice the star graphic is placed on his hat in the freeze frame. The five pointed red star is traditionally linked to communism as well as broader socialism. This would be a very negative image to those on the right who despise communism. 3) Fake News Fake news isn't just about making up stories. It also includes omission (not covering an issue as though it wasn’t real or important); slanting coverage through the use of biased “expert” sources; and publishing falsified data and science as though it were legitimate. 4) Gaslighting Gaslighting is a form of manipulation that seeks to sow seeds of doubt in a targeted individual or members of a group, hoping to make targets question their own memory, perception, and sanity. Using persistent denial, misdirection, contradiction, and lying, it attempts to destabilize the target and delegitimize the target's belief. The media are experts at gaslighting. Most articles would showcase HIllary in a positive light and Trump in a negative light. And the media was careful to not interview anti-Clinton people, but always showed anti-Trump voters. 5) Repetition It's just the way human social behavior works -- if a message is repeated enough times, others will begin to accept it as a commonly held belief in the group. Studies have found that if just one person repeats the same opinion three times, it has a whopping 90 percent chance of converting three different people in the group to have the same opinion. Even during the Manchester terror attacks, CNN and MSNBC did not move from their Trump-Russia talking points. They continued to broadcast their agenda, even in the face of a mass terror attack in which little girls were killed at a concert. This is how committed to the cause they are and how important it is to repeat the message over and over again, so people will believe it. Doll test - The effects of racism on children (ENG)

02:45
The "doll test" is a psychological experiment designed in the 1940s in the USA to test the degree of marginalization felt by African American children caused by prejudice, discrimination and racial segregation. Given the considerable increase of the phenomenon of migration in Europe in recent years we decided to re-create the test with Italian children. In fact, thousands of migrants land each year on the Mediterranean coast in search of a better future, some to improve their economic conditions, others are political refugees, fleeing from war zones, discrimination and sometimes ethnic, religious or political persecution. 2015 was considered the year of the 'invasion' that threatened to wipe out social, economic and cultural balances in Europe. The increasingly close surveillance of borders and frontiers could determine, however, a risk to definitively annihilate any possibility of dialogue or integration. In every European country live many second, third and fourth generation migrants, who are now fully-fledged citizens of these nations, like these Italian children. Yet, for many, they remain 'different', 'foreigners', a dangerous definition that, in recent times, could be illegitimately paired with the phenomenon of terrorism. Without a serious political and social change in perspective, we risk dangerously distorting the perception we have of others, and the perception that others have of themselves.
