3d printing tissue and organs (The bioprinting process - Frontiers of tissue engineering) Subscribe: https://tinyurl.com/ycpqj5x4 Twitter: https://twitter.com/everycellauni 3D printing tissue and organs is a fascinating field within tissue engineering. 3D printing body parts to replace failing organs could turn into a medical revolution, eventually replacing the need for organ donors. The path to printing an organ is far from easy though and many problems have to be solved with regards to bioprinters, bioinks and capillary formation in the organ. A big thanks to the Wake Forest Institure for Renegerative medicine and Dr. Anthony Atala for the footage and images on the bioprinting process: https://school.wakehealth.edu/Research/Institutes-and-Centers/Wake-Forest-Institute-for-Regenerative-Medicine The Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine is recognized as an international leader in translating scientific discovery into clinical therapies, with many world firsts, including the development and implantation of the first engineered organ in a patient. More than 450 scientists collaborate on regenerative medicine research at the institute, the largest in the world, working on more than 40 different tissues and organs. The institute is part of Wake Forest University and is located in the Innovation Quarter in downtown Winston-Salem, NC. Through partnerships and collaborations with many regenerative medicine centers internationally, the institute, which is driven by the urgent needs of patients, is making a global difference in the world of regenerative medicine. Flexible when thin, but with very high inter-layer adhesion, nylon lends itself well to things like living hinges and other functional parts. Its low friction coefficient and high melting temperature make it an excellent choice for things like 3D printed gears. Two NASA interns (bottom left) have created a plastic 'robot' (top) with 3D printing technology using a mould and liquid silicon (bottom right) that has internal 'air bladders' that can be inflated and deflated. By controlling these using air tubes, the robot can change shape, size and strength and potentially adopt different roles. Unlike conventional robots, the softness of these structures makes them 'extremely resistant' to damage under harsh terrains, and allow them to join up easily to make bigger temporary structures in space, such as shelters on the moon Original Article: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-7023163/NASA-developing-3D-printed-soft-robots-explore-moon-planets.html Original Video: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/video/sciencetech/video-1924102/Video-NASA-develops-3D-printed-soft-robots-explore-planets.html Daily Mail Facebook: http://facebook.com/dailymail Daily Mail IG: http://instagram.com/dailymail Daily Mail Snap: https://www.snapchat.com/discover/Daily-Mail/8392137033 Daily Mail Twitter: http://twitter.com/MailOnline Daily Mail Pinterest: http://pinterest.co.uk/dailymail Daily Mail Google+: https://plus.google.com/+DailyMail Get the free Daily Mail mobile app: http://dailymail.co.uk/mobile

And if you want to learn more about the amazing work being done by e-NABLE volunteers, visit their website: http://enablingthefuture.org/ They’ve also got a collection of material available at the NIH 3-D Print Exchange: http://3dprint.nih.gov/collections/prosthetics Special thanks to Jen Owen of e-NABLE for sharing footage for this episode. All of the Carbon printer footage is sped up. Although these printers are way faster than conventional 3-D printers, they still takes minutes or hours to create parts. We need to stop the media from misrepresenting information and creating fear around 3D printing. Today I read an article on a respected news outlet called "The Telegraph" in the UK that titled this article about a 3D printer exploding and killing a boy when really the article doesn't show any evidence that the 3D printer was involved directly and even more disturbing proved that the actual explosion was caused by hair spray and gun cotton (flash paper) and really had nothing to do with it. Media outlets are creating titles like this as a click bait but people that don't actually read the article walk away thinking 3D printers are dangerous machines. It's like the whole 3D printed gun media scare all over again! ▼ Corrections ▼ - The thermistor is actually the resistor that measures the temp, the part that gets hot is called the heater. Have you thought about how 3D printing could change your travel, tourism or hospitality business? Here are articles and examples of how this technology could be used. Quotes from Articles "A hotel could give guests access to a 3D printer, allowing them to download and replace the sunglasses they left at home. Perhaps a guest could lighten their luggage load by printing their clothing upon arrival. A destination could also make it possible for travelers to create and print a personalized souvenir of their visit." "These examples may sound trivial but they underline an important aspect of 3D printing: the ability to produce personalized physical objects, quickly and at low cost." "A team of researchers from Cornell and Columbia University published a study that details how 3D printing could benefit the hospitality industry as well as the challenges the technology currently poses through printing a whole dinner, including tableware and cutlery."
