from the opera THE FURNISHED ROOM © based on the short story by O. Henry libretto by Richard Kuss Music by Daniel Steven Crafts www.dscrafts.net Jess, one of the ghosts who appears in the room, prepares to leave her child alone while she walks the street Jess’ Aria (Range: B3 - G5) Jess: What little trinket will he pay to play tonight. Though there's one little ringlet that makes the play okay. Never, never, they never pay at all that way; Takes his laughs and he runs away. I had my one chance and I found my answer. Now a woman with a child Is nothing more than a toy To pay and play and run away. What are you doing? How many times have I told you to use newspaper. Come here! Not on your pants. Oh you. Just like your father. And don't bother Mrs. Purdy again tonight. I'll try not to be back too late tonight; But stay asleep, sleep very tightly if I don't come home alone tonight No. Now don't start acting up. Be a good, big little boy. Go back and play, Play whatever game you play. (She pushes him away and he goes to his wall.) What little trinket will he pay to play tonight? Though there's one little ringlet that makes the play okay. Never, never, they never pay at all that way; Take their laughs and they all run away.

Christmas Story - Gift of the Magi - O. Henry

14:21
Short Story: 'The Gift of the Magi' by O. Henry by June Simms SHIRLEY GRIFFITH: Now, the VOA Special English program AMERICAN STORIES. (MUSIC) We present a special Christmas story called "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry. Here is Shep O'Neal with the story. SHEP O'NEAL: One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. And sixty cents of it in the smallest pieces of money - pennies. Pennies saved one and two at a time by negotiating with the men at the market who sold vegetables and meat. Negotiating until one's face burned with the silent knowledge of being poor. Three times Della counted it. One dollar and eighty-seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas. There was clearly nothing to do but sit down and cry. So Della cried. Which led to the thought that life is made up of little cries and smiles, with more little cries than smiles. Della finished her crying and dried her face. She stood by the window and looked out unhappily at a gray cat walking along a gray fence in a gray back yard. Tomorrow would be Christmas Day, and she had only one dollar and eighty-seven cents to buy her husband Jim a gift. She had been saving every penny she could for months, with this result. Jim earned twenty dollars a week, which does not go far. Expenses had been greater than she had expected. They always are. Many a happy hour she had spent planning to buy something nice for him. Something fine and rare -- something close to being worthy of the honor of belonging to Jim. There was a tall glass mirror between the windows of the room. Suddenly Della turned from the window and stood before the glass mirror and looked at herself. Her eyes were shining, but her face had lost its color within twenty seconds. Quickly she pulled down her hair and let it fall to its full length. Now, Mister and Missus James Dillingham Young had two possessions which they valued. One was Jim's gold time piece, the watch that had been his father's and his grandfather's. The other was Della's hair. Had the Queen of Sheba lived in their building, Della would have let her hair hang out the window to dry just to reduce the value of the queen's jewels. So now Della's beautiful hair fell about her, shining like a brown waterfall. It reached below her knees and made itself almost like a covering for her. And then quickly she put it up again. She stood still while a few tears fell on the floor. She put on her coat and her old brown hat. With a quick motion and brightness still in her eyes, she danced out the door and down the street. Where she stopped the sign read: "Madame Sofronie. Hair Goods of All Kinds." Della ran up the steps to the shop, out of breath. "Will you buy my hair?" asked Della. "I buy hair," said Madame. "Take your hat off and let us have a look at it." Down came the beautiful brown waterfall of hair. "Twenty dollars," said Madame, lifting the hair with an experienced hand. "Give it to me quick," said Della. (MUSIC) The next two hours went by as if they had wings. Della looked in all the stores to choose a gift for Jim. She found it at last. It surely had been made for Jim and no one else. It was a chain -- simple round rings of silver. It was perfect for Jim's gold watch. As soon as she saw it she knew that it must be for him. It was like him. Quiet and with great value. She gave the shopkeeper twenty-one dollars and she hurried home with the eighty-seven cents that was left. When Della arrived home she began to repair what was left of her hair. The hair had been ruined by her love and her desire to give a special gift. Repairing the damage was a very big job. ________________________________________ http://learningenglish.voanews.com/content/short-story-the-gift-of-the-magi-by-o-henry-112399459/117032.html

"The Gift of the Magi" in Easy English | Short Story by O. Henry

05:51
For better understanding this video is with hard coded English subtitles. Jim and Della were poor but happy mainly because they loved each other dearly and compassionately. As Christians they celebrated Merry Christmas vibrantly. And presenting gifts to each other is still the main part of this celebration. However, Della tried her best to save money by negotiating prices with the grocer, the vegetable man and the butcher in such a way that she felt ashamed and humiliated. Still she could not manage more than $1.87 on the eve of the occasion. Della felt extremely unhappy and started sobbing. She consoled herself realizing the fact that life is mixed with mainly sorrows and a little happiness. She was not concerned about the beggarly rented flat only for $8 a week. There was a letter-box, though no letter could go in. More interestingly, the flat had a bell but no one could ring it. However, there was a prestigious card attached there saying ‘Mr. James Dillingham Young’. Jim and Della were relatively better off when he earned $30 ($20 at present) per week. But one thing did not change: whenever Jim reached the flat, Della called him ‘Jim’ and warmly hugged him. Della stopped crying, attended to her cheeks with powder and visualised through the window a grey cat walking on a grey fence in a grey backyard. She visualised the unhappy and despairing Christmas the following day without a suitable present for her husband. Even after saving every penny for months it was still only $1.87. Even after planning for many hours she could not fulfil her long cherished desire to buy Jim a fine, rare and genuine gift which should be considered even less than what Jim’s honour deserved. All of a sudden, some idea came in her mind. Immediately she dropped her hair to its full length before the mirror. Her exotic hair dropped waving and shining like a waterfall of brown waters. It reached below her knee and it looked almost like a dress for her. In no time, she ran out of the door, stopped before a shop and sold her hair for 20 dollars. Jim’s watch was majestic but he had to look at it cleverly due to the old leather belt. Reasonably after searching the stores she found a platinum fob chain and thought it was majestic and made mysteriously only for Jim’s watch. She bought it for $21 and hurried home with the 87 cents. Now Della’s excitement subsided and soon she became aware of her look like a truant schoolboy without her hair. Since Jim was never late she folded the fob chain double in her hand and sat on the corner of the table near the door that he always entered. Jim stepped inside the door and remained absolutely still. His eyes were fixed upon Della, and there was an expression in them that she could not read, and it terrified her. It was no anger, nor surprise, nor disapproval, nor horror, nor any of the sentiments that she had been prepared for. He simply glared at her fixedly with that strange expression on his face. Jim drew a package from his overcoat pocket and threw it upon the table. Della’s white fingers tore the thread and paper quickly. And then a rapturous scream of joy at the sight of the combs her heart had simply waited and longed for without the least hope of possession. And now they were hers. Alas! Her hair was already gone. Jim had not yet seen his beautiful present. She held it out to him eagerly upon her open palm. The dull precious metal seemed to reflect her bright and passionate spirit. But alas! He sold his watch to buy the combs for her. The story is tragic. Jim’s watch was nothing without the fob-chain in Della’s eyes. And her precious part is her hair that badly needed such a comb. Now she has the comb but no more hair. Jim has the chain but no watch. As a result, the gifts turned meaningless. The gifts became trash. So what? The gifts made Jim and Della the most intelligent. Their pure love for each other proved that they are the wisest of all. They are the magi. The writer is Assistant Professor of English & Director, Language Centre, University of Information Technology & Sciences (UITS). The Trimmed Lamp : and other Stories of the Four Million by O. Henry (1862-1910) Born in 1862 and died in 1910, O. Henry's birth name is William Sydney Porter; however, he adopted the pen name O. Henry while in prison. He published 10 collections and over 600 short stories during his lifetime. The Trimmed Lamp follows The Four Million and provides another series of short stories that take place in New York City in the early years of the 20th century and are representative of the surprise endings that popularized O. Henry's work. They also capture his use of coincidence or chance to create humor in the story. O Henry wrote about ordinary people in everyday circumstances. He is quoted as once saying, "There are stories in everything. I've got some of my best yarns from park benches, lampposts and newspaper stands."

O'Henry's wit, wisdom, and irony, with a touch of sentiment makes him a unique author. The Ransom of Red Chief, usually read in schools before one reaches 12, is usually remembered for lifetime. Gift of the Magi, The Cop and the Anthem, and A Retrieved Reformation round out the 4. A must listen!

The book is a series of short stories which take place in New York City in the early years of the 20th century and are representative of the surprise endings that popularized O. Henry's work. They also capture his use of coincidence or chance to create humor in the story. O Henry wrote about ordinary people in everyday circumstances. He is quoted as once saying, 'There are stories in everything. I've got some of my best yarns from park benches, lampposts and newspaper stands.'I hope you enjoy the following readings as much as I enjoyed recording them.(Summary by Marian Brown) More information: http://librivox.org/the-four-million-by-o-henry/
