D.B. Cooper mystery: 45 years on, skyjacker who stole $200,000 remains an enigma - TomoNews

07:05
SEATTLE, WASHINGTON — It’s almost 45 years since a hijacker known by the pseudonym “D.B. Cooper” jumped out of plane above America’s Pacific Northwest clutching a $200,000 cash ransom. More than four decades later, the crime has never been solved and the FBI stopped actively investigating the case in July. The legend of D.B. Cooper began at the Northwest Orient Airlines flight counter at Portland International Airport on Nov. 24, 1971, when a man identifying himself as “Dan Cooper” paid cash for a one-way ticket on Flight 305 to Seattle, a mere 30-minute journey. On board, Cooper showed a flight attendant an explosive device in his briefcase and demanded $200,000 in cash, four parachutes, and a fuel truck on standby at the airport in Seattle. The plane landed at Seattle-Tacoma Airport, where a bag filled with cash and parachutes was delivered, and Cooper released all 36 passengers, along with two flight attendants. The plane took off again, bound for Mexico City, scheduled to stop to refuel in Reno, Nevada. As Cooper sat alone in the cabin, crew members in the cockpit noticed a sudden upward tilt in the plane’s tail section, which required trimming to get the aircraft back to its flight level. Investigators believe this could be the moment D.B. Cooper made his exit by leaping into the freezing cold air, through the clouds, and to an unknown fate. In all the years that have followed, only two pieces of hard evidence have ever been found. In 1978, a hunter found the fragment of a placard for lowering the back stairs of a Boeing 727 along the flight path of the plane. Two years later, about 20 miles southwest of Ariel, Washington a boy discovered $5,800 in damaged cash from Cooper’s haul. The FBI has investigated more than a thousand suspects in the case, but has never been able to identify D.B. Cooper. The bureau officially ended active investigation of the case in July, citing a lack of new information. More than $194,000, the equivalent of more than a million dollars today, has never been recovered. The FBI suspects that D.B. Cooper didn’t survive the jump, but their guess about what really happened is as good as yours or mine. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Crying dog breaks the internet’s heart — but this sad dog story has a happy ending" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4prKTN9bYQc -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

JonBenet Ramsey case: New DNA testing planned after report revealed flaws - TomoNews

02:06
BOULDER, COLORADO — New DNA testing is planned in the investigation of the unsolved murder of 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey, who was found dead in 1996. An exclusive report revealed flaws in the interpretation of previous DNA testing. According to a joint report by Daily Camera and 9News, the DNA samples from JonBenet’s long johns belong to at least two people, in addition to herself. Also, the DNA profile gathered from JonBenet’s underwear could be a composite and not just from a single individual. The new findings make the link between the DNA found in the underwear and the long johns extremely weak, and could result in the DNA findings being considered evidence. Mary Lacy, the district attorney at the time, was given this analysis of the DNA. However, she concluded that the DNA found in JonBenet’s underwear and the DNA found in her long johns pointed to an unknown male. This conclusion exonerated the Ramsey family from suspicion in 2008. Lacy did not respond to requests for comment after the report revealed the DNA findings failed to support her decision to exonerate the Ramsey family. JonBenet was found murdered in the basement of the family house in Boulder, Colorado. Her mother, Patsy Ramsey said she realized her daughter was missing after finding a ransom letter on the kitchen staircase the morning after Christmas and quickly phoned the police. However, police did not find her body during the initial search of the house. It was her father, John Ramsey, who found JonBenet’s body in the wine cellar room in the basement that afternoon. JonBenet was duct taped over the month and her wrists were tied. A garrote was found around her neck and her skull was fractured due to a heavy blow. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Chinese tourist behaving badly: woman’s rants at Chinese tourist in Thailand goes viral - TomoNews

04:40
PHUKET, THAILAND — This Beijing woman, known as “Sister Bin,” is perhaps fsat becoming the world’s favorite Chinese tourist. Why? Because she had the audacity to call out her greedy fellow Chinese tourists for trying to take home a piece of wood from Lover’s Beach in Phuket, Thailand. In the three-minute video that Sister Bin posted on her Weibo page, she described an incident in which a woman from Jiangsu tried to take a large piece of wood home from the beach, despite the fact that the tour guides had told her multiple times that she was not allowed to do so. Sister Bin told the audience that she took it upon herself to tell the tour guide to report the offending woman to customs. Sister Bin then went on cursing and swearing about how Chinese tourists often disrespect other countries’ laws and treat every place like their own homes. This made Sister Bin an instant internet celebrity, helping her amass almost 5,000 followers on Weibo and over 6,000 followers on Facebook. She also seems to be determined to continue her mission to monitor the behaviour of Chinese tourists around the world. Go Sister Bin! Panama canal expansion: how it works

01:24
The expansion of the Panama Canal will not be ready for its 100th anniversary on August 15 as initially hoped by canal authorities. Aimed now to be completed by June 2015, the project was proposed in 2006, began in 2007 and has cost so far US$ 6.5 billion, Newsweek reported. Connecting the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean, the canal currently uses locks in which water flows by gravity and raises ships 26 metres (85 feet) above sea level. Ships can then travel through artificial lakes and channels until they reach another set of locks leading to the sea on the other side. The expansion of the canal will feature new sets of locks that will allow the 81-km-long channel to accommodate even bigger vessels. The new locks will be larger but use less water than the existing ones. Basins next to them will recycle water from the locks as they are emptied, and use this water to partially refill the locks when another ship passes through. Water from the canal’s lakes will also be used to fill the new locks. The new locks will be able to handle ships that are longer, taller and wider. Per-ship cargo capacity will nearly triple, from the current roughly 4,500 standard-container limit to roughly 12,000 standard containers. These changes will make the Panama Canal more competitive with the alternative Suez Canal route, which can currently accommodate much larger ships The Panama began operating in in 1914. It cost about US$420 million and took 40 years to complete. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Theme park accident: Father and son severely burned on hot metal slide ride in Utah - TomoNews

01:45
PARK CITY, UTAH — A family’s summer vacation went horribly awry after a day at the theme park turned into a hellish nightmare. Kenny Edwards and his son suffered severe burns while on a slide at Utah’s Olympic Park, and believe the park’s management is not giving riders enough warning about the slide’s dangers, according to a Facebook page the family set up about their ordeal. On July 3, Edwards and his 4-year-old son were going down the Alpine slide when the sled they were on stopped at a turn and sent them tumbling onto the hot metal. Edwards grabbed the edge of the hot slide and managed to maneuver his son into his lap, but didn’t realize the severity of his burns until the boy pointed them out to him. The skin on his hands had peeled off, and the flesh underneath was red and raw. Edwards got off the slide and flagged down another rider to help bring his son down, reports KUTV. The kind stranger delivered the severely injured boy to his waiting mother. The Texas father of two eventually made it down the slide on the defective sled, with third-degree burns all over his body. The hot metal cooked parts of his leg, elbow and almost 90 percent of his backside. Riders are told beforehand not to touch the hot slide, but aren’t informed that doing so could result in severe injuries. The family is now seeking to get the park to give more explicit warnings about the slide, especially as visitors are required to sign waivers assuming responsibility for any injury or death. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Cambodia lost cities: Vast Khmer empire discovered hidden under the jungle - TomoNews

01:35
SIEM REAP, CAMBODIA — A vast network of previously undocumented medieval cities has been discovered near Cambodia’s Angkor Wat temple. Researchers using LIDAR scanning technology found multiple cities beneath the jungle, the Guardian reported. The cities had complex urban landscapes and were linked by roads and canals. They range from 900 to 1,400 years old and would have been part of the largest empire on earth in the 12th century. LIDAR is a detection system similar to radar, which uses lasers instead of radio waves. It is used with GPS to produce 3D models and maps. Last year, a helicopter mounted with LIDAR technology scanned a 734-square-mile area near Angkor Wat, according to the Guardian. The data revealed the true scale of the lost city of Mahendraparvata, which was previously believed to be much smaller. In fact, Mahendraparvata was about the same size as Cambodia’s present capital Phnom Penh. The scans show the ancient cities had sophisticated water management systems built hundred of years before it was believed the technology existed, the Guardian reported. Geometric shapes thought to be gardens were also discovered. Historians told the Guardian the groundbreaking discovery would help us understand more about Angkorian civilization and the decline of the Khmer empire. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Shigeharu Shimamura teams up with GE to grow lettuce indoors faster, cleaner and cheaper

01:59
A 2300 square meter former semiconductor plant has become the world's largest indoor vegetable farm, thanks to Shigeru Shimamura and special LED lights from General Electric. The farm produces 10,000 heads of lettuce per day all while using less than 1% of the water needed for a normal farm, and none of the weather or pest related risks that come with growing outdoors. Produce waste is also slashed from 50 to just 10% as well. Shimamura's indoor farming company, Mirai, has partnered with GE and is looking to set up similar operations in locations around the world, starting with Hong Kong and Russia. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Grizzly bear attack: Bear snaps hiker’s arm - he then walks 3 miles to his car - TomoNews

02:11
MADISON VALLEY, MONTANA — A grizzly bear attack in Bear Creek almost killed a man. Somehow, he miraculously survived, walked three miles and drove himself nearly 20 more miles to the nearest hospital. Todd Orr says he was walking along a hiking trail scouting for elk when he spotted a mother grizzly bear and her two cubs. When the mother charged at Todd, he tried hitting her with bear spray from 25 feet away, but she ran through the mist and took him to the ground. He tried to lay as motionless as possible while the bear had her way with him, biting him on the shoulders, arms and backpack. At some point she must’ve got bored and left, so Todd tried to get to his car. About 10 minutes later, the bear returned for another attack. This time, she bit him so hard on his forearm, it cracked the bone. Surprisingly, after a few more bites, the crazed sow gave pause and walked away. Stunned, Todd got up, thanked God and made a video of his account, which he later posted to Facebook. The video has accumulated more than 30 million views in less than two days. After driving himself 17 miles to the hospital, it took them eight hours to stitch Todd back together. Fortunately, he’s expected to make a full recovery. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Laser propulsion: NASA's laser-powered spacecraft will fly to Mars in 72 hours - TomoNews

01:41
SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA — NASA scientist Philip Lubin is working on perfecting laser technology that could propel a light spacecraft to Mars in as little as three days. In order for spacecraft to achieve faster speeds, Lubin proposes using an electromagnetic propulsion system that uses light and radiation, rather than the current fuel-based rocket propulsion system. Photonic propulsion is a theoretical system that uses the energy and momentum from photons to move objects through space. According to Wired, when photons from a laser array reflect off an object, their energy is translated into a push that's capable of moving objects like a spacecraft. The system would currently work best with robotic spacecraft. According to Lubin, a robotic probe with a thin reflective sail could travel to Mars in three days. On the other hand, a manned shuttle could reach Mars in a month using the laser-based system. He estimates that lasers could accelerate spacecraft to 30 percent the speed of light, which was previously unheard of. Using photonic propulsion, interstellar travel may be possible and sending a probe to Earth's closest star, Alpha Centauri, could take as little as 15 years, reported Space.com. In comparison, our current technology takes four to eight months to get to Mars. It took 37 years for the Voyager 1 spacecraft to reach the edge of our solar system. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Pinworms in your butt: 7YO infected with millions of worms from biting her nails

01:25
You know when your mom and dad tell you to go wash your hands before eating, but you don’t really think your hands are all that dirty? Think again. You could have tiny nearly invisible pinworm eggs under your fingernails. Pinworms are tiny worms that commonly infect the intestines, particularly of children. Pinworms are really small, about as long as a staple. They infect their host by getting in through the mouth, then the eggs pass through the digestive tract and hatch in the small intestine. The baby worm then grows up and moves out into the large intestine. The females will move to the very end of the large intestine and come out of the body at night to lay their eggs around the host’s anus. A 7 year old girl living in Fujian had a bad habit of nail biting and began complaining to her mother that her bottom itched. The mother used a flashlight to examine her daughter’s anus and was shocked to see something wriggling around along the edges. Ah, the joys of parenthood! Anyway, she immediately took her daughter to the hospital. The doctor explained that since the pinworms came out late at night to lay their eggs around the girl’s anus she would often scratch her anus, then bite her nails, thus feeding the pinworms back into her system. The girl had quite a colony of wriggling pinworms living inside her by the time her mother brought her to hospital. The doctor gave her girl some de-worming medication and she should be worm free within 2 weeks. Maybe now she’ll wash her hands when her parents tell her to. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Typhoon turbine: Japanese engineer develops wind turbine to harness power from typhoon - TomoNews

01:45
TOKYO — A Japanese engineer has designed a new type of wind turbine that he believes would be able to harness power from typhoons. Atsushi Shimizu founded a tech company called Challenergy in 2013 and invented a wind turbine that not only can draw power from the force of wind, but can stay functional during typhoons. The typhoon turbine consists of three vertical blades and a central rod. It has an omnidirectional axis so that it can respond to wind coming from every direction. Instead of driven by a propeller, the turbine makes use of the principle of the Magnus effect: air curves when passing by a rotating object, and the downward deflection of the air-flow produces a lifting force that counteracts the force of gravity, enabling the object to remain airborne. The blades are controlled by the central rod, which can be tightened to slow down, or stop the blades regardless of the external forces. Under normal circumstances, the typhoon turbine can achieve about 30 percent efficiency while conventional wind turbine can achieve 40 percent, ScienceAlert reported. However, conventional wind turbines could be damaged by typhoons while the typhoon turbine would be able to function normally. "Japan actually has a lot more wind power than it does solar power, it's just not utilized," Shimizu told CNN. "Japan has the potential to be a super power of wind.” According to the Japan Guide, about seven or eight typhoons pass over Okinawa prefecture each year, with about three hitting its main islands. Shimizu believes a single typhoon could generate enough energy to power Japan for 50 years. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Smart Floating Farm: Forward Thinking Architecture’s invention could help feed the world - TomoNews

02:02
BARCELONA, SPAIN — A Barcelona-based company has developed a solar powered floating farm system that could ease growing food demand around the world. Smart Floating Farms, otherwise known as SFF, was developed by Forward Thinking Architecture. The idea was inspired by traditional grid-shape fish farms in Asia. The structure is 200 meters wide and 350 meters long, which is roughly the size of 6 football fields. They can be connected to form a cluster of modules. The floating farm has three levels: the top level is installed with photovoltaic panels to harvest sunlight for electricity and it has rainwater collectors for irrigation purposes; second level serves as a greenhouse for the vegetables, which are grown without soil under the hydroponic system; and the ground level is used as a fish farm on the open sea, as well as a fish egg hatchery, a slaughterhouse and a storage room for the fish. All the modules are centrally controlled by software via Cloud technology. The production data will be analysed and can be used to make comparisons on food needs for specific cities. Each SFF is estimated to have a maximum production of 8.152 tons of vegetables and 1.703 tons of fish per year. The floating farms are ideal for densely populated cities near coastal areas such as Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, Singapore and Hong Kong. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. PALMYRA, SYRIA — A transcript of the final communications between soldier Alexander Prokhorenko and Russian Special Forces has been released, detailing the final moments before his called in his own death, trapped in ISIS territory. Prokhorenko was stationed near Palmyra, Syria, in charge of directing airstrikes on ISIS targets. Alone, he suddenly realized he was dangerously low on ammunition and surrounded by terrorists, with no possible escape route. He radioed his commander to communicate his dire situation, and instructed him to go ahead with airstrikes, taking out ISIS jihadists along with his own life in the resulting attack. According to the transcript, Prokhorenko's words were "I am surrounded, they are outside, I don't want them to take me and parade me, conduct the airstrike, they will make a mockery of me and this uniform." His commander refused, ordering Prokhorenko to get to safety before any such command would be ordered. The brave Prokhorenko told him "I want to die with dignity and take all these bastards with me. Please, my last wish, conduct the airstrike, they will kill me either way." His commander acknowledged his plight, ordering in the airstrikes, and sealing Prokhorenko's fate. In his final transmission, he thanked his commander, said he had "the best wife in the world," and was serving the nation he loved. His wife, Ekaterina, was reportedly unaware that her husband was even serving in Syria. They'd been married only 18 months, and reports indicate they were expecting their first child. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Harmony of the Seas: World’s largest cruise ship prepares to set sail on maiden voyage

01:10
SOUTHAMPTON, UNITED KINGDOM — The largest cruise ship ever built arrived in the English port of Southampton on Tuesday ready to set sail on its maiden voyage. At 362 meters in length, cruise line Royal Caribbean International’s Harmony of the Seas is a full 100 meters longer than the Titanic, according to the Daily Mail. Its length is the equivalent of four football pitches, the BBC reported. The ship has a passenger capacity of 6,780. It has 20 restaurants, 23 swimming pools, a 10-storey waterslide, two surf simulators, two rock-climbing walls, a full-sized basketball court and an ice-skating rink. “Harmony of the Seas is the world's largest cruise ship. Bigger can be beautiful when it allows you to put so many great facilities on board to allow people to have a great holiday at sea,” Stuart Leven, the managing director for the UK and Ireland of Royal Caribbean International told the Telegraph. One of the key feature of the ship is its bionic bar. Passengers can place drink orders via an app and robotic arms mix and serve the drinks. The two arms can make two drinks per minute. Passengers are given a wristband known as the WOWband, which acts as a room key and can be used to pay for dinner and shopping onboard. Harmony of the Seas is the 25th ship in Royal Caribbean International’s fleet. It cost $1 billion and took two and a half years to build. The ship will leave Southampton for Rotterdam on May 22 on a four-night cruise, the BBC reported. It will then sail to Barcelona, Marseille, Florence, Rome and Naples. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Solar panel windows: coating of quantum dots on windows harvest energy from the sun - TomoNews

01:37
LOS ALAMOS, NEW MEXICO — Researchers at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico have developed a film of quantum dots that can turn windows into photovoltaic systems. Quantum dots can be used as semiconductors. According to IEEE Spectrum, they consist of a CdSe inner core, a Cd1−xZnxS outer shell and a silica coating that prevents them from oxidation. The quantum dots are spead into a thin sheet that can be placed onto a glass window pane. When photons from sunlight hit a quantum dot, it sends the electron in the valence band into the conduction band, leaving a hole behind. When the electron recombines with the hole in the valence band, a new photon with lower energy is generated. This new photon propagates within the glass via internal reflections. Energy is then generated when the propagating photons reach the window frame, where solar cells are stored. The coating of quantum dots can be used on any window and to turn it into a sunlight harvesters at costs lower than are currently available. The study was published in Nature Energy on Oct 10. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. PAPILLION, NEBRASKA — An 18 year-old girl’s viral pictures of her nasty charger-in-foot injury are teaching kids everywhere why they should always clean their rooms. Julia Pechar, 18, was watching Netflix last Tuesday inside her seriously messy bedroom when she got up to get some popcorn, and when she did, she stepped on the charger. According to the Omaha World-Herald, the high-school student then took the photos of her foot and her room. She called on her mom Mary, who pulled the charger out. The tweet accompanying the photos reads: “When your room is this messy, you have to accept the consequences of not being able to see where you step”. The photos have been retweeted some 13,000 times and have been featured in news around the globe. Pechar was treated with a tetanus shot and is on antibiotics following the injury, reported the Omaha World-Herald. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Pregnant mother suffers second degree burn after falling asleep on her iPhone 7 - TomoNews

01:22
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA — A pregnant woman in Australia posted a shocking image on Facebook showing the second degree burn she sustained after falling asleep with her charging iPhone 7. 34-year- old Sydney resident Melanie Tan Pelaez was watching movies on her iPhone 7 while it was being charged on Tuesday night, then she fell asleep, news.com.au reported. The next morning when Pelaez wakes up, she feels pain, pins and needles down her arm, realising she’d been left with an mark of the phone and charger etched into her arm. Pelaez visited a general practitioner and a hospital, they matched the markings on her arm to the phone and the charger. Pelaez took the phone to an Apple store. The staff said it wasn’t the phone’s fault since it supposed to shut off if it overheats. And it didn’t smell like an overheated iPhone. After meeting with the doctors, Pelaez wanted to share her awful experience on Facebook and is afraid the same might happen to someone else. Pelaez told news.com.au that Apple tried to give her a new iPhone 7, but she declined as she has lost her faith in the tech giant’s smartphone. Various media have already contacted Apple for comment, Apple said they are now working with Pelaez to investigate the incident. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Space elevator would climb incredible 20-kilometer tower in ambitious Canadian plan

01:42
PEMBROKE, ONTARIO, CANADA — A Canadian space company wants to build a space elevator that reaches 20 kilometers high. The company is called Thoth and the concept is called the Thoth X tower. The idea is to build a tower with reinforced inflatable sections. The middle is hollow. An elevator car would encircle the tower until it reaches the top. Thoth estimates the tower would cost $5 billion to construct. As a demonstration project, it would build a precursor tower measuring 1.5 kilometers tall. One feature of the project is the wind farm about three quarters of the way up. The 50 turbines could produce 1 gigawatt of continuous energy. That’s enough to power about 700,000 homes. The main purpose of the tower is to provide a take-off and landing platform for spacecraft. If your aircraft takes off at a 20 kilometer altitude, you can get to space in a single stage without the need for additional fuel stages. Thoth estimates this would save 30% on energy costs. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Plane lands in wrong country: AirAsia X flight to KL lands in Melbourne after nav error - TomoNews

01:43
SYDNEY — An Australian aviation investigation report has revealed how an AirAsia X flight bound for Malaysia last year accidentally flew to Melbourne instead of its Asian hub after a navigational error. The AirAsia X Airbus A330 was scheduled to fly from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur. Australian authorities say the plane’s captain manually copied the gate coordinates displayed on a sign outside the cockpit window into the flight management guidance system. As he accidentally omitted a zero, the system located the plane near Cape Town, South Africa. Both the captain and the first officer heard several chimes as they prepared for takeoff. They chose to ignore the alerts because there were no other abnormal indications. Immediately after takeoff, an audible alert sounded, warning of terrain in the plane’s flightpath. Not seeing any obstacles, the pilots ignored the warning. The plane had already deviated from its supposed departure flight path and crossed the paths of other aircraft. An airport traffic control officer noticed the deviation and contacted the pilots. Only then did they realize the GPS error on their navigation display. The pilots requested permission to abort the flight and return to Sydney airport, but were unable to turn back due to deteriorating weather. The captain then accepted the alternative route to Melbourne and manually flew the plane to the new destination. AirAsia X told CNN that all of its aircraft have since been equipped with upgraded flight management systems to avoid repeating a similar mistake. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Biogas: Human waste turned into clean power in Cameroon innovative clean energy project - TomoNews

01:27
BUEA, CAMEROON — Two towns in Cameroon have installed biogas systems to turn human waste into sustainable energy that can provide fuel and electricity for local communities. The project was initiated by Bioenergy-Cameroon, a non-governmental youth organization. Local students, especially female students, are trained on how to install and maintain innovative technology systems such as solar power and biogas mechanisms. According to Reuters, the system includes a septic tank, which is connected to a bio-digester at individual households. Human waste placed in the septic tank is converted into biogas inside the bio-digesters, which release energy into people’s homes for cooking and lighting. Reuters reports that more than 3,000 households and local schools in the towns of Buea and Bamenda have installed the biogas system. The Center for Environment and Development, an NGO in Cameroon, estimates that the biogas project may reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the vicinity by up to 60 percent. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Wife crushes man’s testicles: Man dies after 5 minutes of ball-crushing agony - TomoNews

01:15
TIEN GIANG, VIETNAM — A Vietnamese man died of suffocation after an altercation with his wife during which she reportedly crushed his testicles. On July 10, Le Kim Khai came to the home of his separated wife, 55-year-old Phan Thi Kim Chuong, to find her and one of their two daughters refusing to let him in. Khai found a hand saw and used it to cut open the door lock and break in. Once inside the husband and wife began violently fighting. Khai began punching his wife repeatedly despite his daughter’s pleas for him to stop. Chuong eventually grabbed Khai’s testicles and wrestled him to the floor, climbing and sitting on his stomach. Never loosening her vice grip, Chuong called the police. For five minutes, Chuong crushed the man’s balls until neighbors arrived and convinced her to stop. It was too late; Khai had lost consciousness and when en route to the hospital his face had turned purple. An autopsy revealed food stuck in the man’s windpipe. His official cause of death was suffocation. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Sleeping pods in airports and elsewhere allow you to get some shut eye in public - TomoNews

01:38
ABU DHABI — Sleeping pods placed in convenient locations allow people to get some desperately needed shut eye in public. Google may have popularized the concept of having sleeping pods in the workplace, but they're not the only company that uses them. Way back in 2012 with the London Olympics then approaching, one English company anticipated heavy traffic that would affect employees' commutes. So the company built sleeping pods that allowed employees to sleep in the office with privacy, reported Wired Magazine. These sleeping pods included a single mattress, while more advanced models also featured a stereo and a mirror. And now people can also choose to sleep with some privacy (and dignity) at airports instead of sprawling across several seats in front of gawking onlookers. Abu Dhabi International Airport was the first airport in the world to offer sleeping pods in 2013, although the service has since extended to many other airports worldwide — from Dallas-Fort Worth to London Gatwick. Abu Dhabi's GoSleep sleeping pods allow users to lie completely flat. Each pod is able to partly or fully block out sounds in the busy airport, depending on the user's preference. According to the airport's website, later stage pods offer wifi access, power sockets for charging electronic devices and space to store luggage under the cushion. The GoSleep sleeping pods can be rented out for about US $12 an hour — or about the price of three coffees. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. ATM skimming: How to spot an ATM skimmer - TomoNews

01:35
NEW YORK — This animation explains the practice of automatic teller machine (ATM) skimming, a common form of fraud that involves a compromised ATM that allows criminals to access bank accounts. According a survey published in April 2016, such incidents increased 546% from 2014 to 2015 in the United States. The data came from financial analytics company FICO and FICO Card Alert Service software, which also states that 60% of the incidents took place at non-bank ATMs. ATM skimming usually employs two separate components. First, a fake card reader is fitted onto the ATM’s card slot. It scans and stores the information on the card’s magnetic strip as it slides through. Then, a pinhole camera hidden on or near the ATM records the PIN entered on the keypad. Alternatively, a fake keypad is placed on top of the real one to record the digits entered. To avoid becoming victim to skimming fraud, one must check for any objects mounted on the ATM or near it. Comparing the ATM being used to another nearby can help spot suspicious differences. Examine any mounted parts by pulling them to see whether they are securely attached. Feel the keypad for its sensitivity and check whether it was placed on top of a real one. The research also reports that 60% of incidents took place at non-bank ATMs. You might want to avoid using ATMs in malls, for instance, and stick with those located outside or inside your bank. According to PCMag, one should examine any mounted parts by pulling them to see if they are securely attached. Also, try to feel the keypad for its sensitivity and check if it was placed on top of a real one. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Tree man disease: Bangladesh man receives 16 surgeries to restore hands to normal - TomoNews

05:35
DHAKA, BANGLADESH — It may have taken a year and an insane number of surgeries, but this Bangladeshi man couldn’t be happier to finally have his hands and feet back. CNN reports that Abul Bajander suffers from epidermodysplasia verruciformis, a rare disease that began causing lesions to appear on his skin at age 10. The lesions worsened over time, eventually encompassing both his hands and making it difficult for him to make a living as a rickshaw driver. Bark-like growths had also started sprouting from his hands and feet, making it impossible to do anything except scratch his neck. The 27-year-old has been dubbed “Tree Man” by international media, and is one of only four people in the world to ever be diagnosed with the disease. Doctors in Dhaka offered to treat him free of charge, and moved him and his family to the hospital last February to begin the first of many groundbreaking surgeries. Sixteen operations later, doctors have removed eleven pounds of growth and restored tree man’s hands. He’ll still need a few more surgeries for beautification, but he now can at least eat, write, and hold his 3-year-old daughter on his own. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TomoNews is your best source for real news. Homeless in LA: Homeless man living in personal paradise in LA freeway underpass - TomoNews

01:30
LOS ANGELES — A homeless fella turned his lemons into more than just lemonade, as he transformed a dinky freeway underpass into opulent digs he’s proud to call home. Ceola Waddell, 59, didn’t want to spend his nights in a cardboard box, when he could live nicely like everybody else, the Los Angeles Times reported. Waddell’s underpass crib has all the furnishings: a four-poster bed and couch decked out in animal print, porcelain toilet, a makeshift Jacuzzi, and more. It’s even big enough to fit extras, including a tent that’s rented out to other homeless people for $25 a week. A video tour of the eye-popping accommodation eventually made it to Facebook, where it’s been viewed more than 1.4 million times. As a result, Waddell now has fans who trek to his underpass compound, which he calls Paradise Lane, to get a good look and take photos with him. But not everyone is happy about the lavish crib. City sanitation crews have dismantled the makeshift abode twice. Each time, Waddell scavenged neighborhoods for useful junk and rebuilt his setup. Homelessness remains a growing issue in LA, with numerous encampments around the city. NASA planet discovery: Kepler space telescope finds 1,284 new planets in our galaxy - TomoNews

01:49
WASHINGTON — NASA's Kepler mission, launched in 2009 and with two more years to go, has detected 1,284 new exoplanets, including nine worlds that may be able to sustain life. NASA announced on Tuesday that the Kepler Space Telescope, which searches for planets in our Milky Way that lie up to 3,000 light years from Earth, has verified 1,284 new planets. Five hundred and fifty appear to be rocky based on their size. Of these 550, nine are located just far enough from their suns to suggest they may contain water. The latest finding nearly doubles the number of confirmed exoplanets and is the largest number of new planets announced at one time, reported Space. According to NASA's statement, the new findings can be credited to a computer simulation and a new statistical method that takes into account such factors as how many total stars are in our galaxy. The total number of exoplanets discovered now stands at 3,200. A total of 21 of these may be habitable. The Kepler mission shows that with at least 70 billion stars in our galaxy, there may be billions of habitable, Earth-sized planets out there that have yet to be discovered. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Future motorcycles: Honda self-balancing Riding Assist tech keeps bike balanced - TomoNews

04:02
LAS VEGAS — Honda has unveiled a well-balanced piece of motorcycle tech designed to help riders stay in the saddle at low speeds. The Riding Assist concept bike has an adjustable front fork that assumes a wider angle to increase stability and its own motor attached to the front wheel, TechCrunch reported. As anyone who’s ever tried to maneuver a big bike out of a parking lot at low speed knows, keeping balance at 2 or 3 miles an hour is one of the trickiest aspects of riding. The bike was revealed earlier this week at tech tradeshow CES 2017 in Las Vegas. Although there’s no plans to bring it to market soon, the concept bike shows how Honda’s investment in robotics can have spin-off benefits for its vehicles. The technology behind the Riding Assist bike was honed in the development of both Honda’s humanoid Asimo robot and UNI-CUB scooter, according to TechCrunch. Personal robots like Asimo are likely still a decade away from being ready to be sold to consumers. However, the legacy technology from the development of Asimo and the UNI-CUB could help bring real improvements to Honda’s vehicles much sooner than that. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Cancer breakthrough: T-cell therapy and cancer vaccine could offer future lasting cure - TomoNews

02:15
SEATTLE — Scientists in the U.S. and in Italy are developing a revolutionary cancer therapy that would teach the body to destroy cancer cells on its own, reducing the need for debilitating chemotherapy treatments. The new technique developed by the Cancer Research Center in Seattle, involves removing T-cells from patients, and genetically modify them by adding chimeric antigen receptors, or CARs, from genetically engineered mice. The modified T-cells are then injected back into the patient's body, and are able to target and destroy cancer cells. The therapy is similar to a treatment given last year to British baby Layla Richards, who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, a disease in which the bone marrow makes too many immature lymphocytes, Sky News reported. Richards received her treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital in central London and was left cancer-free. Recent T-cell immunotherapy trials have shown great results also in the U.S. More than 40 patients with different types of blood cancers were treated, and more than half of them were left cancer-free. Among patients with terminal leukemia, 94 percent went into remission. Being in remission, however, still implies the cancer could eventually return. In a second major breakthrough in Italy, researchers at the University of Milan have discovered that memory T-cells can stay in the body for at least 14 years, according to a study published on the San Raffaele Hospital website. This means the cells could be trained to fight cancer as well as to remember the disease in case it comes back, allowing them to defeat it again. The latest discovery gives hope for the development of a vaccine-style drug that could stop cancer from coming back once it has been defeated. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. You idiot! Stupid tourists' photo op damages 800-year-old stone coffin - TomoNews

07:22
SOUTHEND ON SEA, UK — An ordinary day at a museum in the UK went horribly wrong when a family's failed photo op damaged an 800-year-old coffin. According to the BBC, on August 4, a family was visiting Prittlewell Priory[e] Museum in Southend-on-Sea. Hoping to snap a morbid photo, the parents reportedly reached over an exhibit barrier to put their child inside an 800-year-old ancient sandstone coffin. In the process of picture-taking, the offending family managed to knock off a chunk of the sarcophagus[f]. The family did not say a word and fled the scene, but were caught on the museum's surveillance cameras. According to the conservator, the coffin was found on the grounds of the monk's residence in 1921 and has been displayed in the Prittlewell Priory Museum ever since. It used to contain a skeleton that the museum says could have belonged to a senior monk, so arguably, it is a valuable artifact. In response to the photo-op incident, Prittlewell Priory[g] Museum's conservator Claire Reed said the staff was "shocked and upset", but added that the damage was repairable. The museum said they did not expect people to actually get into the artifacts, and they plan to completely enclose the stone coffin in the future. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Military technology 2017: DARPA testing robot warship that can hunt enemy submarines - TomoNews

05:53
ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA — The U.S. military is currently testing an autonomous sea vessel with the ability to track enemy submarines. The Sea Hunter is being trialled by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). It’s designed primarily to hunt submarines equipped with quiet electric-diesel engines. The 40-meter-long vessel can travel at 31 miles per hour and has no armaments. Its design resembles a Polynesian outrigger canoe. This helps it navigate the ocean and handle challenging 6-meter-high waves. According to the Department of Defence, advanced software and hardware allow it to operate autonomously around other vessels and remain at sea for months at a time. Testing is expected to finish in 2018. If it is successful, it will be handed over to the U.S. Navy. ------------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your best source for real news. Kickboxing gone wrong: Man’s leg bends wrong way during Muay Thai training session - TomoNews

01:03
TORONTO — Video footage of a kickboxing demonstration shows a man’s leg bending in the wrong direction after a kick from the instructor pops his knee out of joint. The video was reportedly taken in 2012 but was only recently uploaded to YouTube. The video, supposedly taken at a Muay Thai class, show two men at a practice session when the teacher delivers a low kick on a student during a training session. However, the demonstration goes terribly wrong when this causes the student’s knee to pop out of joint, forcing his lower leg to bend in the wrong direction. The student is clearly in pain as he tries to sit down, but is unable to because of his awkwardly bent leg beneath him. Instead of cries of horror, people behind the camera can be heard laughing as the teacher quickly positions himself on the other side of the student to deliver another swift kick that pops the student’s leg back into place. Surprisingly, the student seems to think the entire ordeal is pretty funny too and is seen in the video laughing along with the rest of the bystanders. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Scientists convert carbon dioxide into rock in breakthrough climate change experiment - TomoNews

01:18
HENGILL, ICELAND — Researchers are hailing a potential game-changer for climate change after successfully converting carbon to rock at a geothermal power plant in Iceland. The project could help to reduce global warming by burying the waste CO2 produced from burning fossil fuels, the Guardian reported. Scientists at the Hellisheidi geothermal power plant converted carbon dioxide into the volcanic rock basalt, according to a study published in the journal Science. The researchers pumped 230 tons of CO2 into rock 500 meters underground, dissolving the gas in water to prevent it from escaping. More than 95 percent of the gas turned to stone within two years, speeding up a natural process that takes hundreds or thousands of years, the Guardian reported. A potential problem for the technique is that it requires 25 tons of water for every ton of buried CO2. However, researchers said seawater can be used, which is abundant at coastal sites, the Guardian reported. The project is seen as an improvement on existing carbon capture and storage methods that store CO2 as a gas, causing concern about potential leaks. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Racism at Chili’s: Black veteran has free meal revoked after Trump supporter complaint - TomoNews

03:05
CEDAR HILL, TEXAS — A military veteran taking advantage of a complimentary meal at a Chili’s in North Texas had his food taken away after his service was called into question by a fellow customer. Ernest Walker proudly served in 25th Infantry of the U.S. Army, Division Tropic Lightning. On November 11, the army vet was waiting for his food with his service dog, Barack. The restaurant offers all active service members and veterans a free meal on Veterans Day as a thank you. The meal took half an hour to be served, and as Walker had to go, he asked the waitress to put it in a to-go box for him. As he was waiting for his doggy bag, he says an elderly man wearing a Trump t-shirt walked over and questioned him about his time in the military. The man, who himself claimed to be a World War 2 vet serving in Germany, didn’t believe Walker was actually a veteran. A few minutes later, the manager came over and told Walker another guest said he wasn’t a veteran because he was wearing his hat indoors. After providing his discharge papers and his military ID, the manager then told him the guest also said his dog was not a service dog. That’s when Walker started recording the incident on his smartphone. After arguing for the duration of the video, the manager took Walker’s to-go box away and told him to “have a great day.” Following the unfortunate exchange, Walker posted the video to Facebook, and the story has since gotten back to Chili’s, who have responded saying the situation has been escalated to the highest levels of the company. So far, Walker hasn’t yet been contacted by anyone at Chili’s or its ownership group, but the two sides are expected to meet this week. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Affordable housing? ByFusion turns waste plastic into RePlast bricks to make cheap homes - TomoNews

01:12
NEW YORK — A New York startup has developed an innovative way to recycle waste plastic, converting it into an alternative building material that can be used to build affordable housing. The company, called ByFusion, has designed a machine that is highly compact and modular. It can be powered by propane gas or electricity and can process all types of plastic waste, according to the ByFusion website. The plastic waste does not have to be pre-processed. Instead, it is shredded inside the machine before it’s made into a new material called RePlast and compressed into bricks. The RePlast bricks are not as strong as concrete, so are reinforced with steel rods, wire and layers of mortar. The company said RePlast has been used in projects including retaining walls in New Zealand and California, which have withstood environmental tests such as earthquakes. ByFusion has so far raised around $30,000 of a $250,000 target on Indiegogo. On its campaign page, it says the machine will likely be available in the U.S. by May next year. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. First artificial heart implant offers new hope to patients with heart diseases

01:40
Originally published on December 30, 2013 An artificial heart created by French biomedical firm Carmat that is designed last to up to five years was implanted for the first time on December 18 in a 75-year-old patient who, according to doctors, is progressing well. Until now, the longest a patient has lived with an artificial heart is just under four years. The new heart developed by Carmat is designed to replace a patient's real heart, or at least provide a longer bridge of time while the patient waits for a heart transplant. The Carmat artificial heart's shape and size are similar to those of a natural heart. It has two ventricles and four valves that can reproduce the pulsatile flow of blood circulation and accelerate and reduce cardiac rhythm in according to the level of effort being exerted by the patient. It is made from chemically treated animal tissue to lessen the risk of blood clots and rejection by the immune system. To power the heart Carmat uses two external lithium-ion batteries connected to electric wires behind the left ear and linked to the heart through under-the-skin wires. The system is portable, allowing the patient to return home by carrying it on a trolley or on his shoulders. Nearly 100,000 people in Europe and the U.S. are in need of a heart transplant, according to Carmat. Men are more likely to be implanted with Carmat's artificial heart, as heart failure affects more men than women, and the device is sized such that it can fit in 86 percent of men but only roughly 20 percent of women, according to a Reuters report. A U.S. rival to Carmat, an artificial heart called AbioCor, is authorised in the U.S. for patients with end-stage heart failure or who have a life expectancy of less than 30 days, are not eligible for a natural heart plant and have no other viable treatment options. -------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. World’s biggest pearl: Massive 34 kilo pearl worth $100 million found in Philippines - TomoNews

01:11
PUERTO PRINCESA, PHILIPPINES — Quite a few Asian countries call themselves the Pearl of the Orient, but never has the Philippines deserved the moniker more than now, with the discovery of this huge gem. The Puerto Princesa Tourism Office in Palawan recently unveiled a monstrous pearl measuring 67 centimeters long and 30 centimeters wide and weighing 34 kilograms. A tourism officer posted the photos of the pearl on Facebook, with a call for gemologists to certify its authenticity so that the city can use it to vy for the title of world’s biggest natural giant clam pearl. The current record holder is the Pearl of Lao Tzu, which weighs 6.4 kilograms. According to Palawan News, the monstrous pearl was turned over to the tourism office for safekeeping by a local fisherman. The man found the priceless gem in the waters off Palawan a decade ago, discovering it inside a giant clam that got stuck on his boat’s anchor. He had no idea how much it was worth, and just kept it under his bed as a good luck charm. The pearl is reportedly valued at $100 million. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Farewell Saruman, Count Dooku, Dracula! Christopher Lee dies, 93

02:53
British actor Sir Christopher Lee, known to many for having, as the Washington Times put it, one of the "most prolific screen-villain careers of all time", has died. He was 93. The London-born actor passed away Sunday morning, after being hospitalized for respiratory problems and heart failure while preparing for his latest film role. Standing a massive 6'4'', Lee was an actor of towering stature, both literally and figuratively with, according to IMDb, more than 280 acting credits to his name. Roles as iconic as the eponymous count in Terence Fisher's "Dracula" and the shiny pistol-toting Bond villain Scaramanga "The Man with the Golden Gun" and more recently the wizard Saruman in “The Lord of the Rings” franchise and Sith lord Count Dooku in two Star Wars prequels. The above roles, however, fail to scratch the surface of his incredible career, so below we present a brief gallery of our personal favorite Sir Christopher Lee moments. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Giant black hole 12 billion times bigger than the sun is baffling scientists

01:24
The discovery of a giant black hole which is growing faster than usual challenges our current theories of black hole expansion. Led by Xue-Bing Wu of China's Peking University, a team of scientists detected a giant black hole they have named SDSS J010013.021280225.8. Though it is not the biggest black hole ever found, it is the biggest one detected in terms of luminosity: 40,000 times more bright than our solar system, the Milky Way, said Avi Loeb, Chair of the Department of Astronomy of Harvard University in an interview with National Geographic. He was not involved in this research. Apart from its size, what is astonishing is that it was formed only 875 million years after the big bang—a relatively short period for a black hole to grow to such a massive size. Scientists are are not certain what accounts for the black hole's rapid development, but one of the possibilities is that two black holes collided when the universe was very young. A black hole starts to form when the core of a dying star loses nuclear fuel, allowing gravity to overcome outward pressure. The core explodes and the star becomes a supernova. The black hole has such a powerful gravitational pull that nothing, including light, can escape. Yet, scientists can detect the existence of black holes from their quasars, a glow of radiating gas and matter. The black hole also absorbs other stars in its vicinity. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. UK scientists develop gene therapy to treat early stages of Alzheimer’s disease - TomoNews

01:22
LONDON — Researchers from Imperial College London have developed a gene therapy that has successfully prevented the development of Alzheimer’s disease in mice. To treat the disease, scientists created a modified a virus using a lentivirus vector in order to target specific cells. This modified virus also contained a gene called PGC1-alpha, which is said to prevent the formation of amyloid-beta peptide, a protein that causes amyloid plaques. Amyloid plaques are commonly found in the brains of those with Alzheimer’s disease, and are said to cause brain cell death. The modified virus was delivered directly into the brains of mice suffering from the early stages of Alzheimer’s. Lab results showed the mice with the PGC1-alpha gene developed very few amyloid plaques, while the untreated mice had multiple plagues after four months. The study was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Plastic in the ocean: Young fish are dying from eating microplastics like it’s junk food - TomoNew

01:38
UPPSALA, SWEDEN — About 8 million tonnes of plastic are leaked into the ocean annually, and its impact on the fragile underwater ecosystem has scientists worried. The BBC reports that a new study from Sweden’s Uppsala University has found that young fish are eating microplastic like junk food — and it’s killing them. Microplastic particles result from the fragmentation of large plastic waste, or from tiny manufactured plastic, such as microbeads in cosmetic products. Measuring less than 5 millimeters across, the particles flow through waterways and into the ocean, accumulating in shallow coastal areas. Larval perch that normally feed on plankton have been found to be actively choosing the microplastic as food. This has resulted in their stunted growth and sudden disregard for the smell of predators. The ability to respond to the smell of predators and flee is typically innate in young fish. When placed in tanks with their natural predator, perch that ate plastic were preyed upon four times faster than those that did not. All were dead within 48 hours, reports the Deccan Chronicle. Scientists warn that the harmful effects of plastic is not limited to fish, and may be felt throughout the food chain. The study, published in the journal ‘Science’, is an important step in understanding the silent threat that plastic wastes poses on marine creatures. According to Chemistry World, the U.S. has already put a ban on the production of microbeads in personal care products, effective July 2017. Pressure is building for other countries, especially in Europe, to follow suit. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Massive blizzard hits the United States’ East Coast on Monday

01:12
The Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast are bracing for what the National Weather Service has labeled a “crippling” snowstorm threatening to sweep through the East Coast on Monday and Tuesday. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio warned city residents on Sunday that New York is facing what could be “one of the largest snowstorms in the history of this city.” The snowstorm, dubbed “Winter Storm Juno” by the National Weather Service, began in the Midwest. Storms are created at cold fronts as warm air from the equator meets cold air from the poles. At the point where the two types of air meet, the warm, moist air rises above the cold air and creates storm clouds. This relatively mild storm will likely transform from a clipper-type storm system into a blizzard as it makes its way from the Midwest to the Northeast. The main reason for this transformation is that as the storm approaches Washington D.C., the storm hits a trough, a concave, low-pressure area of the global jet stream conducive to wet, stormy weather. Jet streams are formed by the difference in temperature between the northern and southern hemispheres. As this difference in temperature begins to lessen because of global warming, the jet stream has started to move more slowly, and consequentially become more wavy. This has created more opportunities for the troughs to dip deeper into parts of the United States. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets.
